Trust me, a Christmas tree collar sounds more complex than what it actually is!

A Christmas tree collar is a decorative cover that wraps around the base of your tree to hide the stand and give it a clean, finished look.

We have an artificial Christmas tree we use yearly, so I love using a woven tree collar to conceal the tree’s metal legs.

Plus, the tree collar actually prevents kids or pets from getting too close to the tree and causing unwanted accidents!

I’m a big fan of tree collars because they’re generally sturdier and more durable than a tree skirt.

I’m also a bit of a neat freak, so I love that a tree collar always looks neat and structured, unlike a tree skirt which may look a bit messy from time to time and will need constant adjusting.

I ended up choosing a black woven tree collar which I’ve used for four years and counting!

It feels timeless and works beautifully with both my neutral Christmas décor and a traditional red Christmas!

Using a real tree? Don’t worry, you can still use a tree collar for a real tree! You just need to make sure the collar fits around your tree stand and that you can still reach in to water your tree.

How To Put On A Tree Collar On A Tree

Before purchasing a tree collar, you should measure the diameter and height of your tree stand to make sure the tree collar can fit comfortably around it.

A good rule of thumb is to make sure the base of your tree stand isn’t wider than the base of your tree collar.

Once you’ve bought a tree collar, set up and place the tree collar where you want the tree to stand.

Then, place your tree stand right in the center of the tree collar and secure your tree in the stand.

If you’re using a real tree, make sure there’s enough space around for access to watering.

You may also want to get a waterproof or water-resistant tree collar like plastic/synthetic rattan or metal, so it doesn’t get damaged if water spills.

After the tree is secured in the stand, you can adjust the collar pieces to make sure they sit closely around the stand’s base.

Once you’re happy with the collar placement, you can clip or latch to secure the tree collar.

If needed, you can fluff the tree branches to make sure the tree stand is hidden completely.

I recommend getting a tree collar that comes in parts rather than one-piece for easy assembly and storage. But, if you have a tree collar that is in one solid piece like me, always set up and place the collar down before assembling your tree. Otherwise, you’ll have to lift your tree slightly to slide it underneath, which can be dangerous especially if you have children or pets!

3 Unique & Neutral Christmas Tree Ideas

In 2021, I decided to go for my first neutral Christmas tree.

I like to think of this Christmas tree decor as my take on a fun, whimsical, modern boho style.

There are no rules — just pure creativity and going with the flow!

If you’re someone who loves decorating without following strict guidelines, this Christmas tree decor is perfect for you!

In 2022, I decided to embrace a simpler, more minimal style for my Christmas tree.

I wanted something that felt traditional but with a few modern touches to keep it fresh.

To me, this still feels like a timeless, classic tree – one that I think would look just as beautiful for years to come.

Last year, I decided to shake things up completely and skipped the usual Christmas baubles and ornaments.

This tree turned out to be the most unique one I’ve ever done. It was grand, luxurious, and an absolute showstopper!

It was bold and unexpected, and I loved seeing how different it was from anything I’d done before.

A Modern Boho Christmas Tree

While there are really no rules for creating this whimsical boho tree look, I do have one big tip: mix up your ornaments!

To get that playful, eclectic style, I combined ornaments of different shapes, textures, and sizes.

On my tree, you’ll see a mix of classic gold baubles along with star-shaped and teardrop ornaments.

Adding variety (especially ones you love) keeps things interesting and make the tree feels personal.

To keep everything looking cohesive, I stuck to a palette of three main colors – white, gold, and brown.

However, I made sure to mix in different shades and finishes to keep it interesting.

You’ll find a blend of matte gold, sparkly gold, soft white, dark brown, beige, and even hints of bronze throughout the tree.

This way, it still feels unified, but there’s still enough variety to add depth and texture.

And let’s not forget the magic of mixing textures!

I layered a variety of pieces – from delicate glass baubles to cute mini ceramic houses and little paper Christmas trees.

Adding these different textures brings so much visual interest to the tree, giving it so much character and personality!

If you have kids, here’s a tip: make sure to place your glass ornaments towards the top where it’s harder for little hands to reach!

It keeps them safe and ensures the delicate ornaments stay in place, while still letting the tree look fun and playful.

For our tree topper this year, I went with a kitschy, white felt star that felt perfect for this whimsical Christmas tree.

Actually, the star is too small for the tree, but hey, anything goes!

The best part of decorating this way is that there are no rules. And, I love how it all came together, imperfections and all.

A Modern Traditional Christmas Tree

This modern traditional tree is a complete contrast to the one I did the year before!

For this look, I started by layering gold beaded garlands to add a touch of elegance.

Then, I added white and gold baubles in different sizes and textures – some smooth, some sparkly – to give the tree a lovely, balanced feel.

It was so fun to create something a bit more classic, while still keeping it fresh with those modern touches.

My favorite part of the entire tree has to be the white and black ribbons I added.

I just love how they bring a subtle feminine touch that makes the tree feel extra special and beautiful.

The only thing I’d change is the black ribbons. They blend in with the dark green branches and you can’t really see them in photos.

If I could redo it, I’d go all white and double up on the ribbons to give the tree even more impact.

For this tree topper, I went with a gold star frame since I was leaning towards a more traditional vibe.

The best part about this neutral Christmas tree?

It required minimal effort to pull together. Plus, everything was super affordable!

Honestly, I’m so happy with how everything turned out. It’s one of those trees that just feels timeless and simple yet stunning.

A Unique Floral Christmas Tree

I hadn’t planned on doing a floral tree, but when I spotted these gorgeous flower picks at my local store, I was instantly sold.

They were simply too beautiful to pass up!

It definitely doesn’t feel like a traditional tree, but flowers for Christmas? Groundbreaking!!!

The key to putting together this floral tree was mixing and matching blooms of all different sizes and adding in a variety of picks.

Again, it’s all about those little details that bring everything together!

Even the larger white flowers have shiny buds and a touch of glitter on the edges of the petals!

My favorite part of the floral tree has to be the smaller flowers.

The petals have these gorgeous varying shades of champagne gold with a little bit of sparkle that catches the light perfectly.

They look beautiful in photos, but they’re even more stunning in person.

There’s something about the way they shimmer and bring warmth to the tree that makes them feel extra special.

For the tree topper, I thought these gold branches were the perfect choice to complement the florals.

They may not look like traditional Christmas decor, but it felt like the right finishing touch.

Ultimately, I loved seeing how each piece came together to create something truly unique and eye-catching.
