Last year, it was my first time hosting Christmas brunch for my family in my apartment, and I really wanted something festive and memorable for my little nieces.

So, I went down the traditional red and green Christmas decor route and styled a traditional red Christmas tablescape for brunch.

(I don’t even know why it took me so long to embrace a classic Christmas – Home Alone is my favorite Christmas movie after all!)

I LOVED how the red Christmas table decor instantly made my home feel warm, inviting and effortlessly festive.

As with all of my tablescapes, this one didn’t cost a fortune.

P.S. I always set my table the day before so I can snap some pretty photos of the table setting while everything’s still neat and untouched. Because let’s be real… once the food comes out and the karaoke starts with my nieces, there’s zero chance I’ll get a decent shot of the table!

There are so many shades of red to choose from but the best reds for a traditional Christmas in my opinion are a true red or a cranberry/deep red.

That’s why I chose this gorgeous true red and white floral tablecloth to be the showstopper of my traditional red Christmas tablescape.

While I love the versatility of a plain tablecloth, a patterned one is so visually striking that it instantly adds that wow factor.

This means you don’t need to overthink the rest of your table styling!

Brighten Things Up With Complementary Accent Colors

Before you deck the entire table in red, keep in mind that it’s important to balance the boldness of red with other grounding colors.

If everything is red, nothing will stand out!

Since the tablecloth had white accents, I used my white scalloped dinner and dessert plates to match.

Initially, I’d skipped the gold chargers, but I realised the plates looked a bit flat against the patterned background.

That’s when I realised the whole setup needed a little metallic warmth.

I added gold chargers and gold utensils to lift everything up – and boyyy, it made such a huge difference!

To finish it off, I brought in these fun black glasses with squiggly stems.

The small pop of black made the whole look feel more modern and allowed the red and gold to take center stage.

If you’re not sure which colors to pair with red, you can’t go wrong with gold, white, and green!

These are the ultimate classic color combos for a traditional Christmas.

Budget-friendly table styling tip: You don’t need to splurge on fancy glassware or designer side plates to create a beautiful table setting. Some of my tableware like glasses or dessert plates are actually thrifted/vintage. Mixing and matching different styles can make your table setting feel more welcoming and less formal too, especially during the holidays.

Dress The Table Up With Traditional Centerpieces

The best part about creating a traditional red Christmas tablescape is that there are so many fun and festive red Christmas centerpiece ideas to choose from!

Since both of my nieces are under five, I knew I needed something kid-friendly – nothing too fragile here!

So, I styled my centerpiece around a small tabletop Christmas tree placed in a gold plastic vase (both were from Ikea and cost less than USD25 in total!)

I decorated the tree with red baubles that looked like mini disco balls and tied a deep red ribbon at the top instead of using a star.

To complete the look, I flanked the tree with two red nutcrackers.

Even though the color palette, tree, and nutcrackers are all classic Christmas elements, the disco ball ornaments and whimsical touches made it a fun and festive Christmas table.

It felt traditional but still playful – perfect for a family-friendly holiday meal!

And, yes, there was still plenty of space on the table to serve food!

Budget-friendly table styling tip: When shopping for ornaments, plastic ones are usually the most affordable. But, that doesn’t mean they have to look cheap! My trick is to look for plastic ornaments with interesting textures or finishes. That’s why I chose a hammered gold vase instead of a plain one, and tiled red baubles rather than flat gloss. Details like metallic finishes, ribbed textures, or matte surfaces can instantly elevate the look, even if the materials are inexpensive. You can also mix different finishes (matte, shiny, glitter) to create dimension and give your red Christmas table decor more visual interest.

Sprinkle In Personal Or Vintage Touches

This is hands-down the #1 reason why we decided to go with a glass dining table.

Since we live in an apartment, we wanted to make sure we didn’t crowd the space with large pieces of furniture.

Our home has an open-concept layout, so the living and dining area essentially share the same space.

Since our living area already had some built-ins and a large couch, we knew it was important to keep things balanced.

A glass dining table was the perfect choice because the glass tabletop lets light flow right through, making the space feel brighter and more open.

Because you can see through the top (and even underneath it), it doesn’t visually block the room like a solid dining table would.

Instead, it gives the illusion of a larger and airier room, which was exactly what we wanted!

To be fair, we also have big windows that let in tons of natural light, which definitely helps.

But if your dining area doesn’t get much sun, a glass dining table can make a big difference.

A glass table top reflects and bounces light around, which brightens up the entire space and feel less closed in.

Easy to clean and maintain

You know what I’ve come to appreciate most after seven years with a glass dining table?

Just how easy it is to clean and maintain one!

Back at my family home, we had a beautiful marble dining table, but over time, it picked up so many stains and etch marks.

And while those little imperfections might give it “character”, they used to drive me (and my mom!) nuts because we’d notice every tiny mark.

With my glass table, I don’t stress about spills at all.

A quick spray of glass cleaner and a paper towel – and it becomes spotless in seconds!

No worrying about coasters for hot or cold drinks either because there will be no rings or marks left behind!

Since we eat at the dining table pretty often, it’s such a relief to not have to tiptoe around food and drinks like turmeric, curry, or red wine.

Another bonus? I don’t have to polish it like I would with wood or natural stone.

Once it’s wiped down, it looks clean and sleek. Every. Single. Time!

My #1 tip for keeping a glass dining table clean? Skip a damp cloth and go for a paper towel (or newspaper!) instead.

Cloths can leave behind lint and streaks (yes, even microfibre cloths!), but a paper towel is more absorbent and has a slightly abrasive texture.

I guarantee this cleaning hack will leave your dining table streak and lint free.

Strong and durable

After seven years of daily use, I can *confirm* that our glass dining table is super strong and durable.

Now, to be fully transparent, we still play it safe by always using a trivet when placing something really hot like a dish straight from the oven onto the table.

Even though tempered glass is designed to handle heat and pressure, we’d rather not take any chances. Broken glass is not something we ever want to deal with!

But other than that, we have had zero concerns about stains, moisture, rust, warping or swelling.

Unlike wood, which can warp or swell if it gets too much moisture, or metal that can rust over time, our glass dining table has held up beautifully over the years, even with daily use!

Minimal yet versatile

I’ll admit – a glass dining table might not bring the same cozy warm feel that a wooden one does. But, that’s actually part of what makes it so versatile.

Because glass is neutral and transparent, it can blend easily with other furniture because it doesn’t clash with different materials or styles.

Plus, its minimal clean design means I can decorate a glass dining table in so many different ways – even when it’s not in use!

And, just because it’s minimal doesn’t mean it’s boring!

These days, glass dining tables come in all sorts of shapes, sizes, and styles.

Ours might look like a standard six-seater at first glance, but it actually extends to fit up to eight or ten people, which has come in so handy when we’re hosting!

If you have a small family, my friend’s round glass dining table is stylish without taking up too much space.

Glass dining tables also come with a wide variety of leg styles and base designs like chunky pedestal bases to ornate metal frames and carved wood legs.

When we were shopping around, we came across glass dining tables with decorative metal or heavy traditional wooden legs and bases.

While they were beautiful in their own way, they didn’t match the clean, modern style we were going for.

Plus, my husband is really tall, so we needed a table with legs that didn’t get in the way of legroom, especially in the middle!

Honestly, it took us months after moving in to finally find the right one! But, it was worth the wait.

We eventually found a table with sleek walnut wood legs – simple, classy, and modern – and it was perfect.

The rich tone of the wood adds the perfect amount of warmth to balance out the cool minimalist glass top.

It was the perfect mix of function and style, and it fit seamlessly into our home.

Environmentally-friendly

A glass dining-table is considered eco-friendly because glass is a non-toxic, recyclable, and sustainable material.

On top of that, they’re built to last.

Because they’re so durable, you’re not constantly replacing them, which helps cut down on waste over time.

I can vouch for that – our glass dining table has been with us for seven years now, and we have no plans to swap it out anytime soon!

Cons of A Glass Dining Table

Expensive

Tempered glass dining tables can definitely be on the pricier side, but that’s usually because they’re made from high-quality materials and built to last.

When we were shopping for dining tables, we noticed that the glass tables were a lot more expensive than many of the wooden ones.

(That said, some of said wooden tables probably weren’t solid wood, which can make a big difference in price)

In the end, we bought the display unit of the glass table we fell in love with.

Even then, it still cost us around $1,000, but it was still a save because the original price was nearly double!

It felt like a big purchase at the time, but after seven years of daily use, we have zero regrets! It was definitely worth every single penny.

Shows fingerprints and dust easily

Now, I’m not going to lie… this is hands-down the worst part of owning a glass dining table for me.

Fingerprints. Dust. Cloudy spots.

They show everything.

If you’re someone who notices smudges the second they appear (guilty!), then you’ll probably find yourself reaching for the glass cleaner more often than you’d like.

That said, the actual cleaning isn’t hard or time-consuming. It’s just the frequency that can be a bit much.

Can be scratched

Even though glass dining tables are generally pretty hardy, they’re not totally scratch-proof.

Over time, small scratches can happen… and unfortunately, once they’re there, they can’t really be fixed.

We’ve got a few on ours now, and they’re from tableware made of stoneware.

The rough unglazed bottoms of our plates ended up leaving fine scratches on the glass surface. We didn’t notice them until it was too late!

So if you’re planning to get a glass table (or already have one), I’d definitely recommend using tableware made of ceramic or melamine instead.

You can also use placemats as a little extra layer of protection – something I wished we had done from the beginning!

Can be dangerous for families with kids and pets

People ask me all the time: “Are glass dining tables safe?”

Honestly, in my experience – yes, they are.

The worst thing that has happened in our home is bumping into one of the sharp corners on our rectangular glass table.

It’s not crazy painful – just imagine stubbing your toe on a coffee table! Not ideal, but not a dealbreaker either.

But if sharp corners are something you’re worried about, a round or oval-shaped glass table might be a better fit.

The curved edges are softer and less likely to cause injury if someone bumps into them.

I must say we haven’t had any accidents at home but we don’t have children and it’s mostly just my husband and I at home.

If you’ve got kids or pets constantly running around the dining area, it’s definitely worth keeping in mind that while tempered glass is strong, it can still break under circumstances and broken glass can be dangerous.

Can show feet, pets, and more while dining

We’re a no-shoes household (shoes off as soon as you enter the house!), so this doesn’t really bother us.

But, I know some people might find it a bit off-putting to see things like bare feet, dog drool, or specks of dirt under the table while they’re trying to enjoy a meal.

That’s the thing with glass dining tables. Since you can see right through them, you also see everything underneath.

Side note: we actually find it hilarious seeing our dog watching us intently while we eat. She just sits there, laser-focused, hoping for a crumb to drop. It’s honestly the cutest and funniest part of dinner time!

Non-repairable

Like I mentioned earlier, the scratches on our dining table are here to stay. Unfortunately, there’s no fixing them.

It’s kind of like the “once broken, considered sold!” policy you see in stores.

Once the glass is scratched or broken, there’s no repairing it. If it breaks, you’ll have no choice but to buy a brand new dining table.

Base / Legs

Glass dining tables often come with a variety of base options – usually metal and wood, and sometimes even acrylic.

When choosing a base, consider not just the style, but also the durability and stability.

You want something that fits your space, supports the glass top securely, and blends well with your overall decor.

Here are a few questions to help you decide on the right base style:

• What other materials are already in the room? Do you want the base to complement or contrast them?

I’ve had my ZZ plant for over five years now, and whenever I’m stuck on what to use as a centerpiece, I just pop it on the table.

It’s completely fuss-free and instantly makes the area feel fresh and lively.

I recommend using any potted plants that don’t need much attention like a small olive tree or a ZZ plant like mine.

Just make sure the size of the plant works with your table – you don’t want something so tall it blocks conversation across the table!

A Simple Mother’s Day Table Setting

My mother adored florals.

Growing up, our home was always filled with them.

From fresh blooms in the garden, faux arrangements inside the house, floral table linens, to little flower prints on our bedsheets!

It was just her way of bringing beauty into every corner.

So when it came to setting this table, the theme was an easy choice.

A sweet pastel floral table setting felt like the perfect way to honor the most special woman in my life.

To complete the table setting, I wanted to add as many florals as possible without overwhelming the table.

This is the final result, and I think it all came together so beautifully!

How many floral elements can you spot?

I’ll give you a hint – the tablecloth, table runner, napkins, and centerpiece have flowers on them!

Although there are more than three floral elements, each piece stands out in its own way and nothing is competing with each other.

That’s why this simple Mother’s Day table setting looks pretty and cohesive.

Blending Soft Florals & Pastel Hues

The trick to mixing different floral elements is to stick to soft pastel tones.

Bright, bold colors can overpower the table, making it look messy.

For this table setting, I layered a beige table runner with embroidered flowers over a sage green printed floral tablecloth.

Since both colors are light and muted, they complement each other well.

The most special part about this table setting is definitely this gorgeous table runner.

It’s perfect for my Mother’s Day table setting because this table runner actually belongs to my mother.

Florals in Every Little Detail

First, the fresh blooms in the centerpiece.

I mean, you can’t have a floral-themed table setting without fresh flowers, right?

But, I’ll be honest.

I made a mistake – I should’ve gotten two bouquets instead of one to make the arrangement fuller.

Other than that, I LOVE this colorful spring floral arrangement.

The colors bring the table to life, and the mix of flowers adds beautiful texture and depth.

The next floral element I love is the rose napkin fold.

Using creative napkin folds to elevate my table settings is a new thing I’ve tried recently, and I’m absolutely obsessed!

So far, I’ve done a bow napkin fold, a heart version, and now a rose one.

Easy Upgrades To Elevate Your Mother’s Day Table

I absolutely love fresh flowers, but I’m still figuring out how to arrange them myself.

That’s why I usually go for pre-arranged bouquets from the supermarket or florist.

They’re easy and affordable.

This one was a budget-friendly find, and while the flowers might not be the freshest, the convenience makes up for it.

All I had to do was take them out of the packaging, trim the stems to fit my vase, and they were good to go!

Plus, buying individual flowers to DIY an arrangement can get expensive fast.

And, there’s no guarantee it’ll turn out the way you imagined (unless you’re a pro, of course!)

One of my favorite ways to make a simple table setting feel a little more special is by adding candlesticks for some extra height.

I always reach for my gold tapered candlestick holders – they’re a staple in almost all my tablescapes.

But this time, I switched things up with taupe tapered candles instead of my usual ivory ones.

It’s a small and inexpensive change, but they add a hint of color and contrast without overpowering the table setting.

Finally, I’m all for mixing and matching different textures.

It’s an extremely easy way to add depth and dimension for any table setting.

So, I decided to use these gorgeous red scalloped cotton placemats and coasters, which I purchased last year during a Christmas sale.

At that time, I knew they would be perfect not just on Christmas Day, but for Valentine’s Day too.

And I was right!

They became the starting point of the table setting, creating an elegant and polished look.

This minimalist approach made me realise how easy it is to pull together a beautiful setting without buying everything new.

Who says Valentine’s Day has to be loud and overly flashy with bold, in-your-face decor?

Sometimes, it’s the subtle and refined decor that makes everything feel like a truly luxurious experience.

A Red, White & Gold Color Scheme

When most people think of Valentine’s Day, red and pink instantly come to mind – and I’m no exception!

But since I don’t own anything pink, I decided to create a more unique look by sticking with red, white, and gold for my Valentine’s Day table setting.

This burnt orange tablecloth isn’t something I’d normally go for, but I was drawn to the subtle texture and design.

It’s so different from anything else I have at home, and I’m so glad I chose it!

The only downside to it is that it is a bit sheer, so I had to layer a beige tablecloth underneath to hide the glass table peeking through.

I didn’t have to use placemats, but I felt like the table needed a little something to brighten things up and to let the the tableware really shine.

With the burnt orange tablecloth, I knew it had to be something subtle that wouldn’t steal the spotlight.

These beige and cream striped placemats were perfect!

They not only complement the tablecloth beautifully, but they also anchor the whole setup and make the tableware pop in the best way.

Be Creative with Your Centerpieces

What’s an indoor tropical summer table setting without fresh greenery and flowers?

I know a lot of people think centerpieces have to be expensive, but I’m all about using what you already have at home!

And if you do need to buy something, I say spend wisely and make sure it’s something you’ll use again.

For this setup, I used my potted ZZ plant (which has been sitting in my home forever) and paired it with my gold candlesticks to create a simple yet stunning centerpiece.

The centerpiece on its own is already lovely, but I couldn’t resist adding a little more color with fresh flowers!

I wanted something simple and budget-friendly, so I decided to arrange the flowers in small bottles I had at home (bud vases work great for this too!)

This way of displaying flowers is so easy because you only need 2-3 stalks to make it work. No fancy arranging needed.

Just pop the flowers into the bottles or vases, and ta-da ~ you’re done!

Fun fact: these bottles were actually my old kombucha bottles.

I gave them a good clean, removed the labels, and repurposed them as vases. Easy, affordable, and so cute!

You can use any flowers you like, but for this tropical look, I went with mokara orchids.

Their vibrant colors and gorgeous, showy blossoms just scream tropical and exotic!

I love how they bring that lush outdoors vibe indoors.

If orchids aren’t your thing, try using gerberas, sunflowers, or anthuriums.

The key to getting this look is to choose bold, cheerful blooms that make a statement!

If you want to elevate your table setting, add some fun with dessert plates in different colors or patterns.

You don’t have to spend much on dessert plates. Try finding unique pieces in thrift stores or on Facebook Marketplace.

I have to tell you about these glasses. They’re vintage pieces from my late mother’s collection, and I absolutely love them.

To make the arrangement more unique, I mixed in a few stems of green amaranthus for more texture.

The dining room makeover has been a long time in the making, but I’m so pleased with how everything turned out.

Before Dining Room Makeover

Six years ago, my interior style was more bohemian, so I wanted my dining room to have a vibrant, tropical vibe.

I loved using plants as decor, bringing in natural elements that added to the room’s airy feel.

To complement the bright and airy vibe I loved so much, I opted for a glass dining table and clear acrylic chairs, keeping the space light and uncluttered.

However, over time, I noticed that the elements started blending together, lacking the visual contrast I had hoped for.

A few years ago, I hung a tree-print artwork on the wall.

I thought it would add more character to the dining room, but the piece didn’t quite fit the tropical-bohemian vibe.

Not to mention, its size was too small for the wall, making it feel out of place.

Although the dining room didn’t look terrible, it never truly felt like me.

The space lacked a clear identity and felt disjointed.

It just didn’t align with the vision I had in mind, and despite the effort I put into decorating, it never clicked the way I wanted it to.

The room wasn’t cohesive or personal – it felt more like a collection of ideas rather than an intentional reflection of my style.

In the end, I just didn’t feel connected to the space, which made it hard to fully enjoy.

After Dining Room Makeover

After making a few thoughtful adjustments, the dining room finally feels like the space I had envisioned all along.

It now feels warm, cozy, and inviting, all of which perfectly aligns with my personal style at this stage of my life.

The room no longer feels forced; instead, it reflects a cohesive, intentional design that feels like me.

The transformation lies in the small but impactful details, which made all the difference.

Dining Room Decor Details

A Fresh Coat Of Paint

In 2022, I collaborated with Vasari to repaint the apartment using their limewash paint. We used Vasari’s Linen White for the dining room wall.

The moment I saw the new wall colour, it gave me the creative spark I needed to dive into a full dining room makeover.

I immediately thought the soft, textured finish of the limewash added so much depth to the space, making the room feel both moody and inviting at the same time.

The subtle warmth of Vasari’s Linen White created the perfect backdrop and set the tone for the entire dining room makeover.

Swap Out The Furniture

The next step in the makeover was swapping out the furniture.

I had been meaning to replace the acrylic chairs for a while — one had broke, and more importantly, they weren’t comfortable enough for long meals.

I know, I know, what was I thinking in the first place?!

Anyway, when I came across this set of white boucle chairs, I instantly fell in love.

Their soft, curved shape felt like the perfect contrast to the hard edges of my dining table, adding balance and visual interest to the space.

What also drew me to the chairs was their sleek and sophisticated black legs.

Since black naturally draws attention and gives the space a sense of focus, I’ve been wanting to introduce touches of black to the dining room.

These new chairs not only made the dining area more comfortable but also brought in the right mix of softness and structure.

That’s not all! Since I’ve always loved the charm of mismatched dining chairs, I wanted to carry that concept into the dining room makeover.

This time, I decided to pair the boucle chairs with natural rattan and wood armchairs.

The wood armchairs are my husband’s favourite. They’re made from real wood, so the beautiful natural grain stands out.

I love how these two chair styles complement each other: the softness of the boucle contrasts well with the rattan and wood textures.

Plus, both chairs are SO comfortable.

One thing’s for sure – I learned my lesson the hard way. So, it was very important to me that the dining area is as practical as it is stylish!

Choose The Right Artwork

The hardest part of the dining room makeover was choosing the right artwork.

This time, I wanted something personal that truly resonated with me. Nothing generic or mass-produced!

Fortunately, I connected with a local artist, Carissa from Wildflower Culture, who offered to create a custom piece based on a story I wanted to express.

I immediately jumped on board. I’d be crazy to turn down a unique and meaningful piece of art!

I shared with her how I’ve been navigating grief over the past few years and how my love for the beach has been a source of comfort during that time.

She understood my vision perfectly and designed a piece called Beach Mornings to reflect those emotions.

This time, I also made sure the artwork was the right size and scale for the wall.

When the artwork arrived, it fit seamlessly into the room’s design.

Be Intentional With Decor

Sadly, all of my plants have died, but I still wanted a green element to bring life to the space.

I decided to invest in my first large faux plant, which fits perfectly in the corner of the dining room.

If you’re buying a faux plant, it’s essential to repot it.

Faux plants often come in small plastic containers that immediately give away their artificial nature.

I chose a larger decorative pot and filled the top with moss to create a more natural, realistic look.

You should also look out for the colour of the leaves and the texture of the branches. Avoid leaves that are bright green and branches that are too smooth.

When shopping for faux plants, I like to go for ones with small imperfections because they mimic the natural flaws of real plants, making them appear more lifelike.
