Instead of attempting to do it myself, I collaborated with Vasari and they taught me SO much about limewash paint including six surprising things that blew my mind.

But first, let’s take a look at the before and after photos of my home.

Before

The wall colours of my home have been the same since my husband and I moved in six years ago. It’s a basic white with a slight grey undertone. Nothing special.

While I do love the simplicity of it, we live in an apartment with green-tinted glass windows (which we can’t change unfortunately) and the tint from the windows can make the walls look a little cold and sterile.

After

I chose Vasari Lime Paint in Linen White (LP20) for the living area.

Despite the ‘white’ in its name, this colour is NOT white. It’s a subtle beige colour with a neutral undertone. Not too bright and not too dark.

This colour does make my living area look smaller, but it also changes the whole mood of the space. The living area definitely looks more cozy, warm, and inviting now.

If you’re wondering why one wall (and the ceiling!) is not painted, well… it was an honest mistake. I simply forgot to include the wall when the Vasari team came and took measurements.

I’m not fussed about them though since not every wall in our open concept apartment is covered in lime paint.

It feels like an intentional design decision, even though it truly wasn’t!

The dining room went through the biggest transformation and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome!

Since the living and dining area share the same space, I used the same Linen White (LP20) paint for the dining area to make everything look cohesive.

The previous look was bright and airy, which felt very tropical. But once the Vasari team painted the walls, I instantly knew I wanted a moody dining room.

It took me over a year to find (and purchase!) the right furniture and artwork, but it was definitely worth the wait.

I’m in love with my dining area, it might just be my new favourite room in the entire home!

For the large blank wall facing the dining area, I chose the Vasari Lime Paint in Almond (LP25), a darker and deeper shade with a warm undertone.

I’ve always saved this wall for a gallery wall, so I felt it needed a warmer and bolder colour to make the frames pop.

I wanted something completely different for my bedroom, so I went with the Vasari Lime Paint in Olive (LP18).

I have to admit I was a little apprehensive because I was worried the green hue from the paint and the tint from the windows will make the room look washed out.

Thankfully, it didn’t, on the contrary, the bedroom looks so warm, cozy, and homey. Exactly what I was hoping for!

Since I initially wanted a feature wall, this was the only wall in the bedroom that was painted.

I regret not painting the entire bedroom; it would have made the transformation even more major!

Six Surprising Things I Learned About Limewash Paint

1. Limewash is a watered down version of lime paint

Before I embarked on my lime paint journey, I always thought lime paint and limewash were the same.

I even used these terms interchangeably until I found out that limewash is a watered down version of lime paint.

The main difference between lime paint and lime wash is the level of viscosity or thickness of the paint.

I ended up using lime paint (not limewash) because lime paint has a thicker mineral consistency, which makes it easier to work with and to get the texture I want.

Although I love the cloudy texture of limewash, I find that it can look overpowering, especially in open or small areas.

Plus, I wasn’t sure if it’ll look dated in a couple of years.

Since lime paint is not cheap, I opted for minimal texture to fully appreciate the subtle nuances and movement of the paint without it feeling overwhelming.

2. You need to prep your walls before applying limewash paint

It is SO important to prep your walls before applying lime paint. Otherwise, you’re not going to achieve the limewash results you want.

First, you’ll have to clean your walls to remove any dirt, dust, grease and grime. If you have any holes, make sure to fill them and sand them down.

Then, you’ll need to apply a primer before going over with lime paint.

If you are painting new or previously painted drywall, you MUST apply a mineral primer first and give it at least 24 hours to dry.

This provides a porous base for the limewash so it sticks onto your wall properly.

3. You don’t have to use a sealer after the limewash process

Some brands recommend finishing off the limewash or lime paint process with a mineral sealer or a wax.

Sealing your walls will make them waterproof, which means your walls will be protected from stains. However…

Sealing your walls may not be the best idea.

Sealing your lime paint walls can increase the sheen of the finish. And, it can change the appearance of the lime paint colour too.

Although lime paint is all-natural, most sealers are not and contain many non-biodegradable chemicals, which can be dangerous to us and the environment.

Besides that, once a sealer goes on the surface, you’ll need to apply a primer again if you want to repaint your walls in a few years.

4. DIY limewash? It’s not as simple as it looks

It’s important to do your own research if you’re attempting to limewash your walls without professional help.

The Vasari team gave me a hands-on lesson but I still found it challenging to control the texture and colour of lime paint.

One valuable lesson that stuck with me was that using a brush creates less texture whereas using a sponge produces more texture.

You may also need several coats to get the desired effect you want.

5. Limewash paint becomes lighter as it dries

Wet lime paint looks a lot darker when it is first applied.

When lime paint starts to dry, you’ll notice that it will become much lighter.

I discovered that lime paint looks best when you finish an entire wall in one go instead of taking breaks.

If you don’t complete a wall in one session, the paint can appear patchy and uneven.

To get the best results, it’s key to apply it evenly in consistent strokes and finish entire sections without pausing.

6. You cannot achieve perfection with limewash paint

Lime paint is beautiful, but it is unpredictable especially for newbies.

Unlike traditional paint, you’ll find that it’s almost impossible to achieve standard results with lime paint due to its natural textured finish.

But, the variations in colour and texture are what makes lime paint so appealing.

You may not be able to get a flawless, smooth surface but you’ll definitely have a beautifully-aged authentic look that is unique to your home.

How it’s made: Quartzite is formed when sandstone is altered by Earth’s heat and pressure in addition to the chemical activity of metamorphism.

Color: Primarily whites and greys

Pattern: Similar to marble as both stones have feathered strokes or swirling veins across the surface

Uses: Kitchen countertops, decorative walls, roofing tiles, stairs, and flooring

Looks like marble

Quartzite has a similar appearance to marble. Both have free-flowing veins across the surface, which makes both stones look beautiful, unique, and luxurious. In addition, both stones’ colors and textures look alike.

More durable than marble

In terms of hardness, quartzite is a 7 on the Mohs Hardness Scale whereas marble is a 3 on the same scale. As a result, quartzite is much more durable than marble, making it less susceptible to scratches, chips, and cracks.

Doesn’t etch

Etching is a chemical process that occurs when acidic elements come into contact with the stone—for instance, lemon, salad dressing, wine, ketchup, etc. Etching essentially removes a stone’s shine and forms a dull rough spot on the surface.

One of the main differences between quartzite vs marble is that quartzite doesn’t etch. Quartzite’s main composition is quartz, which does not react to acid. On the other hand, marble consists primarily of calcite which reacts to acid. Hence, it is prone to etching when exposed to acidic ingredients or materials.

Heat-resistant

Since quartzite is formed under high heat and pressure, it can withstand high temperatures. This means it will not burn if you place a hot pan or pot directly on the surface.

Increases house resale value

As with all natural stones, having quartzite in your home increases its resale value. Not only does quartzite look beautiful, but its durability makes it a fantastic choice for high-traffic areas like the kitchen. Its longevity and quality make quartzite a highly-sought after stone.

Not all quartzite is the same, as some are more porous than others. While quartzite is generally more durable than marble, it still requires regular maintenance. Therefore, it is advisable to seal your quartzite once every few years to prevent stains.

The price of quartzite ranges from $60 – $100 per square foot and it depends on several factors such as location and design. However, quartzite can cost more than marble, if you include the cost of installation. Quartzite is harder, which makes it more difficult and expensive to install.

What it is: Marble is a metamorphic rock composed primarily of calcite and other minerals like clay minerals, micas, quartz, pyrite, and more.

How it’s made: First, limestone is subjected to the heat and pressure of metamorphism. Then, the calcite in the limestone enters a recrystallization process forming marble.

Texture and finish: Smooth with three common types of finishes – honed, leathered, and polished.

Color: There are many different colors including white, black, green, red/orange, yellow/gold, and brown.

Pattern: Streaks of free-flowing veins running across its surface

Uses: Kitchen countertops, islands, and backsplashes, bathroom countertops, walls, flooring, furniture, and decorative items

Cleaning instructions: Clean daily with a soft cloth, water, and mild water. Remember to wipe dry immediately. Do not use harsh, abrasive, or acidic cleaners, which include lemon juice or vinegar.

Ask anyone what the most beautiful natural stone is, and I’m sure they will say it’s marble! Marble can blend in with a lot of interior styles, making it a popular choice for homeowners. Marble is also available in many colors, patterns, and finishes – no one slab is alike!

Easy to install

Being a softer stone, marble is easier to install than quartzite. As quartzite is a much harder stone than marble, installation may require specialized tools which may cause the process to be more tedious.

High resale value

Like quartzite, having marble in your home will increase its resale value. Due to its long history, beauty, and durability, marble remains one of the most popular natural stones to date. Installing marble for your flooring, kitchen countertops, bathrooms, and centerpieces can increase your property’s value.

Cons of Marble

Porous

Marble is porous, so it has tiny holes or pores on its surface. When a surface is porous, it is extremely hard to clean any liquid passing through the surface. That’s why stains occur when liquids are left lying on a marble surface for a long time.

Not as durable

Marble is one of the softer natural stones, which makes it more fragile compared to quartzite. Despite being heat-resistant, it is susceptible to scratches, etch marks, and, stains.

Requires regular maintenance

Since marble is less durable and more porous than quartzite, regular maintenance is a must. In fact, marble may even require more frequent sealing than quartzite does. Plus, you’re likely to spend more time cleaning a marble countertop over a quartzite one!

Can be expensive

Marble comes in a wide array of colors, patterns, and textures. If you like a bold and dramatic stone, Calacatta marble is your best bet. However, it is the most expensive marble in the world because it is only available from one quarry in the world. For that reason, production is extremely limited.

However, if I had to pick one for my home, I’ll probably go for quartzite. It’s the durability for me. I don’t have to worry about etching or staining the stone!

I know the imperfections add to a stone’s uniqueness, but I can’t bear to see the flaws, especially if the stone is expensive.

Ultimately, you’ll never go wrong with either quartzite or marble. Think about how you’ll be using the stone and how each con affects you.

Like quartzite, granite requires regular maintenance. It is necessary to seal granite annually if it is used frequently. Protecting your natural stone will help it to last for years.

Heat resistant

One of the best things about dolomite is its heat resistance. It retains heat better than many other materials like quartz. While it’s not advisable to place a hot pan directly on any surface, you could probably get away with no burn marks on a dolomite countertop.

Affordable

While there may not be a significant price difference between dolomite and marble, the former is more affordable than the latter. The average price of dolomite is around $55-$75 per square foot, which makes it more affordable than granite, quartz, and quartzite. Prices vary depending on the type of dolomite (e.g. thickness and color) and the location.

Looks beautiful

It’s difficult to tell dolomite and marble apart because they look so similar! Like marble, dolomite has streaks of varied colors or veins across its surface. Its unique pattern and pearly shine make dolomite beautiful and luxurious.

Cons of dolomite

Limited colors available

Most dolomite slabs come in signature grey and white. If you’re looking for a warmer stone, dolomite is probably not for you.

Vulnerable to stains, etches, and scratches

As with most natural stones, dolomite is porous and is still vulnerable to stains, etches, and scratches. Despite being more durable than marble, extra care is recommended to maintain its quality and longevity.

Requires more maintenance

Unlike engineered stones, dolomite needs extra care and maintenance. For instance, dolomite needs to be sealed at least once a year. It is recommended to clean dolomite countertops once a day with a gentle soap as acidic and chemical cleaners may etch or stain the stone. Furthermore, all spills need to be wiped immediately because certain substances like oil, wine, and fruit juices may discolor unsealed dolomite.

Generally, marble is more expensive than dolomite, especially rarer marble like Calacatta marble, which can go for $110-$250 per square foot. However, there are more affordable options like Carrara marble, which can go for $40-$100 per square foot.

Requires more maintenance

Just like dolomite, marble needs extra care and maintenance. Marble needs to be sealed regularly to avoid stains and etch marks. Daily cleaning using a gentle soap is recommended as acidic and chemical cleaners may etch or stain the stone. Furthermore, all spills need to be wiped immediately because certain substances like oil, wine, and fruit juices may discolor unsealed marble.

Dolomite vs Marble – which is better for your home?

If you don’t have a big budget but still want the look of grey and white marble, dolomite is a great option. In fact, you’ll be getting your money’s worth because it is a stronger stone compared to marble.

However, if you want a different stone color and budget is not a problem, you are better off choosing marble.

However, there is a new and improved engineered stone in the market – sintered stone.

At first glance, sintered stone and quartz look alike.

They even share a few common characteristics such as durability and easy maintenance.

Despite their similarities, there is one stone that’s slightly superior to the other.

What is sintered stone?

What it is: An engineered stone made completely from natural minerals

How it’s made: First, natural minerals are carefully selected for quality, colour, and texture before being heated under extreme heat and pressure to form a solid mass that is extremely durable. This process is known as sintering. After the mass is formed, patterns or veins are printed on the slab.

Texture and finish: Sintered stone comes in two types of finishes (high gloss and smooth matte. Both are smooth to the touch.

Colour: A wide variety of colours are available

Pattern: A wide variety of patterns are available. Sintered stone slabs can mimic marble, terrazzo, granite, and more.

Uses: Kitchen countertops, worktops, furniture, flooring, shelves, wall cladding

Cleaning instructions: All you need is warm water and mild soap for day-to-day cleaning. A nonabrasive cleaner works for some stubborn spills.

Maintenance: Day-to-day cleaning is sufficient. No sealing is required.

Pros of sintered stone

Extremely durable

Since sintered stone is an engineered stone, it is extremely durable and nonporous. Like quartz, it is resistant to water, stains, scratches, cracks, and chips. Sintered stone also doesn’t react with chemicals. It scores a 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, which makes it a harder stone than quartz.

Heat-resistant

Since sintered stone doesn’t contain any resin in it, it is heat-resistant. Setting a hot pan or pot on a sintered stone will not cause any damage to the slab.

UV-resistant

Sintered stone is also UV-resistant and its colour will not fade or discolour even when exposed to sunlight over time. This makes it an excellent option for outdoor use.

Looks natural and organic

Sintered stone uses digital imaging technology to print a pattern on its surface. Popular sintered stone patterns mimic the appearance of natural stone surfaces such as marble. The technology used helps to make the stone patterns or veins look realistic, natural, and organic.

Easy to clean and maintain

Similar to quartz, sintered stone is very easy to clean and maintain. They do not require any sealing or waxing and can be easily cleaned with water, mild soap, and a sponge.

100% Natural

Sintered stone is made out of 100% natural materials. It does not contain any resin, unlike quartz.

Cons of sintered stone

Expensive

The cost of sintered stone runs from $60-$100 per square foot. Prices vary depending on the stone’s quality, design, brand, location, and installation difficulty. Overall, the cost of sintered stone is higher than quartz.

Patterns are printed on the top surface only

The pattern on the sintered surface is only visible on the top surface. This is different from quartz, where you’ll be able to see the pattern running through the sides as well.

What is quartz?

What it is: Quartz refers to a mineral of many varieties that consists primarily of silica, or silicon dioxide. However, engineered quartz is made from roughly 90% natural quartz and 10% poly resin. 

How it’s made: Engineered quartz is manufactured by grinding natural quartz and other natural stone or recycled industrial wastes like ceramic and glass and binding them together with resin.

Texture: Wide variety of textures from polished to honed

Pattern: Wide variety of patterns from flecked, smooth, veins to mimic natural stone

Colour: Wide variety of colours. Natural shades especially bright whites are very popular.

Uses: Kitchen countertops and backsplashes, bathroom countertops, indoor floors

Cleaning instructions:  All you need is warm water and mild soap for day-to-day cleaning. A nonabrasive cleaner works for some stubborn spills.

Maintenance: Day-to-day cleaning is sufficient. No sealing is required.

Pros of quartz

Durable and nonporous

Since quartz is an engineered stone, it is nonporous. This means it is resistant to stains, scratches, and acid abrasion. It also will not chip or crack. Thanks to its hardiness, quartz doesn’t suffer from obvious tear and wear marks over the years.

Wide variety to choose from

Engineered quartz comes in a wide variety of colours, textures, and patterns. Plus, with so many brands available in the market, it is easy to source and purchase different types of engineered quartz.

Consistent in colour and pattern

Since engineered quartz is manmade, they are usually consistent in colour and pattern. The pattern also travels through the slab, which means you can see the design running through the side of the countertop. This trait is perfect for people who love cohesion and uniformity.

Easy to clean and maintain

Engineered quartz is well-loved because they are so easy to clean and maintain! They do not require any sealing or waxing and can be easily cleaned with water, mild soap, and a sponge.

Affordable

Engineered quartz run between $55 to $75 per square foot installed. Prices vary based on colour choices, type of brand, sizes, configurations, and location. If you only need a small piece of quartz, consider going to the scrapyard as you may be able to score half-priced leftover pieces from someone else’s project!

Cons of quartz

Not heat-resistant

Engineered quartz is not heat-resistant because it contains resin, which can only withstand approximately 150 degrees. Placing very hot materials on a quartz countertop without a trivet will damage the surface.

Not UV-resistant

Additionally, engineered quartz is not UV-resistant because the resin is vulnerable to sunlight. As a result, quartz is not suitable for outdoor use as the colour may fade or discolour if exposed to sunlight over time.

Not as unique as natural stone

Compared to natural stone, engineered quartz lacks variations in patterning and veining. Therefore, the pattern or veins may look more generic and less realistic.

Sintered stone or quartz – which is better for your home?

After researching both engineered stones, I’m on Team Sintered Stone!

If you have the budget, I highly recommend selecting sintered stone over quartz. Despite their similarities, it’s obvious that sintered stone is the superior sister.

Sintered stone is a lot more durable, looks beautiful and natural, and can be used indoors and outdoors.

What is dolomite?

What it is: Dolomite is a sedimentary rock. In other words, it’s a natural stone that is found on the surface of the earth.

How it’s made: Dolomite is made from limestone and lime mud that come in contact with the magnesium in groundwater.

Texture: Smooth and glassy

Color: Greys and whites are the most common colors. However, you can also find dolomite in other colors such as brown, pink, black, and green.

Uses: Kitchen countertops, bathrooms, and feature walls

Cleaning instructions: Clean your dolomite countertops once daily. Do not use harsh, abrasive, or acidic cleaners, which include lemon juice or vinegar. Wipe all spills immediately with a soft cloth.

Maintenance: As with all natural stones, dolomite requires regular sealing to maintain its quality. Use coasters, trivets, and cutting boards to prevent stains, etch marks, and scratches.

Pros of dolomite

Beautiful and unique designs

Dolomite is a beautiful and classy stone. It looks very similar to marble, as it also has streaks or veins going across the surface. Since it’s a natural stone, no two slabs look alike.

More durable than marble

Although its appearance is comparable to marble, dolomite is more durable than marble. It is harder than marble, which makes it less susceptible to scratches, dents, and chips.

In addition, dolomite is not as porous as marble and doesn’t seem to absorb liquids as easily.

Heat and pressure resistant

Dolomite is resistant to heat and pressure, making it an excellent choice for kitchen countertops. This is its biggest competitive edge over quartz, as quartz cannot tolerate heat.

Easy to get

Dolomite can be found in abundance all over the world, which makes this material easy to find and obtain.

More affordable than marble

The best thing about dolomite is that it looks and feels like marble but costs a fraction of the price!

Cons of dolomite

Less durable than granite

Although dolomite is harder than marble, it is still less durable than granite. That means you can still scratch or chip it, especially when working with glass and metal without any safety measures in place.

Porous

Dolomite is also porous, which makes it susceptible to stains and etch marks.

Requires regular sealing

The best way to maintain a dolomite countertop is to seal it once a year. When unsealed, dolomite can be stained by liquids like oil, wine, and juices. However, these liquids are less likely to penetrate the stone if it is sealed consistently.

Less affordable than granite

Dolomite is usually more expensive than granite. The fabrication cost adds up because it takes more time to cut this natural stone.

What is granite?

What it is: Granite is a coarse igneous rock that is rich in quartz and feldspar. Just like dolomite, it’s also a natural stone.

How it’s made: Granite is formed beneath the earth’s surface through the cooling and solidifying of magma.

Texture: Although they are naturally coarse, they can be polished to create a glassy and smooth surface.

Color: Comes in a wide variety of speckled colors like white, black, blue, pink, and brown.

Cleaning instructions: Clean once a day using a soft cloth to dust the surface. Wipe it down with plain water or a mild soap. Avoid using harsh and abrasive cleaners containing acidic elements like lemon juice or vinegar.

Maintenance: Granite needs to be re-sealed annually to maintain a nonporous surface. White granite countertops usually need frequent resealing compared to dark countertops, as they are more likely to show stains. Always use coasters, trivets, and cutting boards to prevent scratches and other damages.

Pros of granite

Durable

Granite is far more durable than marble and dolomite. It is tough to chip or crack a granite countertop.

Affordable

Granite is widely available and used in many kitchens. It’s also easier to cut and work with, which makes it more affordable than dolomite and marble.

It comes in unique colors

Granite comes in a wide variety of unique colors, so it’s easy to find a color to match your interior style.

It doesn’t drop in value

Most importantly, granite kitchen countertops do not drop in value. If taken care of, granite can last a very long time. They are also considered a premium material, and can even increase your home value up to 25%.

Cons of Granite

Porous

Like all natural stones, granite is porous. This means liquids can penetrate its surface causing stains or etch marks.

Requires regular sealing

As a result, granite requires sealing at least once a year. This helps to protect the surface from absorbing any liquids and leaving stains or etch marks.

Difficult to repair

Unfortunately, granite countertops are difficult to repair. A professional can help with repairs, but it is unlikely they can get your granite countertop to look the way it did before.

So, should you choose dolomite or granite for your kitchen countertop?

Both are beautiful natural stones and share similar pros and cons.

To choose the best material for you and your family, you must first consider how you will use it and which stone will visually match your overall kitchen design.

If you like the look of marble and want a grey and white countertop, dolomite is an amazing alternative to marble.

However, you may want to consider granite if your kitchen has heavy traffic and you are not fussed about the color of your kitchen countertops.

When my husband and I were renovating our apartment, I knew right away I wanted to change the flooring.

There was nothing wrong with the existing tile flooring. But, I wanted to add warmth to the space, and I knew having some type of wood flooring would help me to achieve my vision.

Unfortunately, hardwood was out of the question. Not only is hardwood expensive, but it’s not pet-friendly since it’s not water-resistant.

At that time, our interior designers suggested vinyl flooring. According to her, there are so many affordable options in the market that can mimic real wood (from texture to color!)

We were sold. Four years on, we still love it as much as we did when it was first installed.

Recently, there is another type of flooring that is very similar to vinyl known as stone plastic composite (SPC). However, it has key differences that could potentially make it the more superior option.

SPC vs Vinyl Flooring

What is SPC?

Before we start, let’s find out what SPC is and what it’s made of.

SPC stands for Stone Plastic Composite. The flooring has an extremely durable core made of powdered limestone (calcium carbonate), plasticizers, and polyvinyl chloride (PVC).

SPC has five layers:

• A UV coating that prevents fading and discoloration from the sun
• A wear layer that protects the print film from stains and scratches
• A decorative layer (There are many different colors and patterns, but this layer is what makes them look like wood!)
• The SPC core made of powdered limestone, plasticizers and PVC
• Finally, a base layer that is the foundation that supports the entire structure

What is vinyl?

There are different types of vinyl flooring, but we are going to focus on wood plastic composite (WPC) in this post.

WPC is a type of luxury vinyl plank flooring. Its primary components are polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and a mix of wood flour. It is often designed to mimic the look and feel of hardwood planks/tiles.

Like SPC, vinyl/WPC is made of five layers:

• A UV coating that prevents fading and discoloration from the sun
• A wear layer that protects the print film from stains and scratches
• A decorative layer (There are many different colors and patterns, but this layer is what makes them look like wood!)
• The WPC core made of PVC and wood flour
• Finally, a base layer that is the foundation that supports the entire structure

Similarities between SPC and Vinyl

People often compare SPC and vinyl because they are so similar! Here’s a list of similarities:

• Waterproof
• Termite proof
• Anti slip
• Comes in a wide variety of designs
• Easy installation
• Easy to clean
• Can be installed anywhere

Differences between SPC vs Vinyl

Despite their similarities, there are a few key differences between SPC and vinyl. It’s important to know these differences because these can help you to decide which one to choose for your home.

Construction

The main difference between SPC and vinyl is the construction of each plank. A vinyl floor has a PVC core that makes it soft and flexible. On the other hand, SPC flooring has a core that is made of stone plastic composite, which makes it rigid and less springy.

Comfort

Because of its soft core, vinyl feels much more comfortable than SPC. SPC flooring generally feels harder, which makes it less comfortable for your joints and feet in the long run.

Insulation

Vinyl’s soft core also helps it to retain some warmth, which means better insulation. This is why vinyl is a great option for pets, as pets are likely to find vinyl more comfortable to walk and nap on. On the contrary, SPC tends to feel more rigid and cold.

Durability

SPC is more durable and resilient compared to vinyl. They are dent-resistant. Since vinyl is softer, it is susceptible to wear and tear. For example, heavy furniture can easily dent vinyl flooring.

Noise level

A soft surface usually means less sound will bounce off of it. Vinyl’s soft core makes it the quieter option, perfect for nurseries and home offices where peace is required!

Installation method

SPC uses a click-lock system that is DIY-friendly. There are a few different methods to install vinyl:

• Glue-down, which uses a strong adhesive to stick vinyl to the existing floor
• Loose lay, which uses adhesive only for planks or tiles surrounding the perimeter of the room
• Click-lock, a system that uses built-in tongue and groove system to secure the pieces together. You don’t need an adhesive for this method.

Subfloor

Both vinyl and SPC can be installed over existing floors. Since vinyl is softer, it will show any imperfections like dents. However, SPC does not because the material is generally harder and sturdier.

Price

While price is usually dependent on the supplier and brand, SPC is slightly more affordable than vinyl.

Which flooring should you pick for your home?

After evaluating both options, it’s clear that both SPC and vinyl have their own pros and cons. If you need some help choosing one for your home, consider these factors:

• Does your location of choice have high traffic? If yes, consider SPC for its durability.
• Do you have pets? If yes, vinyl is a more comfortable option for your furry friends.
• Are you using it for the gym? If yes, definitely go for SPC so that your heavy equipment will not damage the flooring.
• Does the area get heat during the cold season? If no, choose vinyl for better insulation.

Choosing the right flooring depends on what works for you and your family. Both materials are truly great because they are affordable, durable, and look just like real wood!

Both techniques are water-based and are great for updating brick exteriors and fireplaces because they allow some of the natural brick to show through.

However, each technique has its distinct pros and cons.

What is limewash?

What it is: Limewash is made from limestone that has been crushed, burned, and later combined with water to make putty.

How it’s made: The putty goes through an aging process. After that, it is thinned with water to create limewash paint.

Texture: Matte finish with a chalky texture

Colors: White (this is the natural color of limestone!), taupe, gray, and brown (these are created by adding natural pigments)

Pros of limewash

• More texture than whitewash paint
• Easy to apply
• Can be removed up to 5 days after applying (this gives you some time to decide if you like it or not!)
• Resistant to odor, moisture, and fungi
• All-natural, non-toxic, and eco-friendly
• Hypoallergenic
• Sinks into porous surfaces so the texture of the natural brick doesn’t change
• Can be made and mixed at home (learn how to do this here!)

Cons of limewash

• May require several coats depending on desired look/coverage
• Expensive if you buy the pre-mixed version
• Difficult to make and mix on your own
• Color becomes much lighter after drying
• Hard to stay consistent if batches are mixed during different times
• May need touching up every 5 years or so because of erosion
• Not applicable for painted brick

My recommendations:

How do I apply limewash?

1. Clean your brick! Make sure to remove all dirt, dust, and grime using a bucket of water and cleaner.

2. Tape off your paint area to avoid spillover on walls, floors, or furniture.

3. Dampen your brick by spritzing water from a spray bottle.

4. It’s time to mix your paint! Pour the limewash paint into a bucket and then dilute it with 50% water. Mix. If you find that you need more water, you can always add more!

5. Use a masonry paintbrush to apply the paint over the brick. Start from the top to the bottom.

6. Let your paint dry for about 10-20 minutes. It should still be damp.

7. Spray more water on the brick and wipe with a rag to get a textured look.

8. Touch up any areas with more paint if needed!

What is whitewash?

What it is: A water-based paint that is mixed with water.

Purpose: Tones down natural colors of brick (and other surfaces too!) to create a naturally vintage or weathered look.

Texture: None

Colors: You can do this in any color!

Pros of whitewash

• Cheap
• Easy to apply
• Dries fast
• Gives a bright and smooth finish
• Offers more color varieties
• Will last 20-30 years with none or minimal maintenance required

Cons of whitewash

• No texture
• May require several coats depending on desired look/coverage
• Harder to remove
• Dries fast (you don’t have time to decide if you like it or not!)
• Not resistant to odor, moisture, and fungi

My recommendation: Giani Brick Transformations Kit – Whitewashed

How do I apply whitewash?

1. Just like applying limewash, you have to ensure your brick is clean. Use water, a good scrub brush, and a cleaner to remove any dust, dirt, and grime.

2. Mix the paint in a container with water and stir well. The general rule of thumb is to mix one part of paint with one part of water. However, you can adjust this according to the coverage you want.

3. Tape off all areas to avoid paint spillage.

4. Apply the paint and water mixture all over your brick.

5. Too much paint? Use a wet rag to wipe off any excess paint.

Are there any other options besides limewash and whitewash?

Yes, there is! You can also apply German Smear all over your brick!

What is it: Spreading wet mortar over brick and then wiping some of it off before it dries.  

Texture: Adds a rough and distressed texture

Pros of German Smear

• Adds texture
• Gives a rustic and “Old-World” look and feel
• Cheap
• Extremely durable
• No maintenance required

Cons of German Smear

• Exhaustive process
• Time-consuming to apply
• Very difficult to remove
• Not applicable for painted brick

Which technique should I choose for my home?

Not sure which technique to go for? Well, it depends on a few factors: the look you’re going for, your budget, and what level of commitment you want to make.

If you have a small budget and want something bright, fuss-free, and permanent, I suggest going for whitewashing.

If you have a bigger budget and want something that has texture, is natural, and easy to apply, I recommend limewashing.

Finally, if you want your brick to look rustic and distressed, consider going for the German Smear.

But, one key difference between both styles is that modern farmhouses usually go for open concept floor plans and larger windows.

Besides that, a modern farmhouse is less elaborate than a classic farmhouse when it comes to detailing.

You definitely won’t find crown molding in a modern farmhouse!

Instead, it is common to see simple detailing like a board and batten wall or shiplap paneling in a modern farmhouse.

Furnishings

When it comes to both styles, less is more.

Both styles lean towards the minimal side – choosing comfortable and practical furniture over over-decorating.

However, the biggest difference is that the classic farmhouse usually has vintage furniture whereas the modern farmhouse tends to go for contemporary pieces.

This type of furniture is lightweight and practical for everyday use.

Colors

Both styles are known for their neutral color palette.

Think white, off-white, cream, and taupe. Additional shades include blues, soft grays, and sage green.

But, the key to getting the modern farmhouse look is to add colors that contrast beautifully against neutral backgrounds.

For example, black accents in the house add depth to light and airy neutral spaces.

Materials

Wood is the primary material used in both styles.

However, a modern farmhouse will also use other materials like stainless steel and polished stone.

Another feature that sets both styles apart is that the modern farmhouse keeps things visually interesting by adding different textures.

This helps to bring out the details in a neutral space.

You can find textures like rattan, cotton, wicker, and linens in a modern farmhouse.

Although they look modern, these natural textures still go with the overall farmhouse look.

Besides that, lighting also plays an important role in a modern farmhouse.

Black lantern pendant lighting is a staple in a modern farmhouse.

Since this material has gotten so popular recently, I’ve noticed a lot of people getting confused between travertine vs marble.

At first glance, travertine looks pretty similar to marble.

Both look like smooth, polished, and elegant stones for the home.

However, after much research, I’ve discovered that travertine and marble are NOT the same.

They are both natural stones and come from the limestone family, but their similarities end there.

What is travertine?

According to Britannica, travertine is a type of limestone that is formed by the evaporation of river and hot spring waters.

As a result, it is a dense rock composed of calcium carbonate.

Travertine can be polished to a smooth finish, honed into a matte finish, and brushed or tumbled into a textured surface.

It has a highly porous appearance and comes in mostly neutral colors like cream and light beige.

Depending on where travertine is mined, it can also come in warmer hues like yellow, brown, orange, and red.

Travertine is mostly used as a building material in both internal and external designs.

What is marble?

Marble is a natural stone; however, it is produced through the crystallization of limestone.

The final result is a stone that has different veins on each piece, making them very unique.

Marble also reflects light beautifully and therefore has a beautiful shine or gleam to it.

Unlike travertine, marble is mostly used indoors.

Differences between travertine vs marble

Appearance

Although they look similar, travertine has holes found within the stone that is caused by carbon dioxide evasion.

This is a unique characteristic of travertine, which gives it a textured and organic look.

Although marble and travertine usually come in single solid colors, marble usually has streaks of darker colors or “veins” running through it.

Marble also comes in a variety of colors like white, green, black, brown, and gold.

On the other hand, travertine only comes in warm colors like beige, brown, taupe, cream, and gold.

They do not have veins, but there are soft color variations between tiles.

Besides that, since both are natural stones, there are no two slabs that look alike.

Durability

Generally, both marble and travertine are durable enough for everyday use.

They will not rust, rot, burn, or change color.

But, both materials are prone to scratching, etching, and staining if they are not sealed consistently.

However, non-polished travertine has a naturally rough and porous surface.

This makes the material suitable for wet areas like a pool deck because it helps to prevent slips and falls.

Travertine is also frost resistant, unlike marble which may crack under freezing conditions.

Cost

One thing’s for sure – natural stones are typically more expensive than engineered stones.

The price of natural stone depends on several factors like the quality, finish, and processing.

Nevertheless, when it comes to travertine vs marble, travertine is usually half the price of marble due to a number of reasons.

For instance, natural travertine is easier to cut and process, hence the lower cost.

Pros of travertine

Cheaper

Considering that it’s a cheaper material yet has almost all the same qualities of marble, travertine is truly a great investment!

Non-slip

Unpolished travertine has a rougher surface, which gives it a non-slip trait that marble doesn’t have.

This makes travertine a safe material for wet areas like bathrooms and pool decks.

Frost resistant

Like the look of marble but experience the world’s worst winters?

Try travertine instead. Travertine pavers can not only withstand scorching summers, they can also endure harsh freezing climates as well!

Beautiful

Travertine is beautiful in its raw or polished state. I love how elegant they look when installed on walls and floors.

Cons of travertine

Naturally porous

As a naturally porous material, travertine is prone to etching, staining, and scratching.

If you’re not someone who can bear the sight of these imperfections, travertine is not for you.

Requires regular maintenance

Just like marble, travertine requires regular maintenance.

It is necessary to seal travertine properly after installation.

Following that, it is important to re-seal travertine at least once a year to avoid stains, scratches, and etch marks.

Best usage of travertine

Now that you know everything about travertine, let’s get down to business.

Which material is better for your home?

You can use travertine almost anywhere in your home!

However, avoid using it as a kitchen countertop as it is a porous material.

Consider using travertine in your:

• Bathroom / Shower
• Pool area
• Walls
• Flooring
• Stairs
• Fireplace cladding
