Farmhouse and modern farmhouse are very similar interior styles. However, did you know that there are some differences between farmhouse vs modern farmhouse? Read on to discover how they’re different and see which style fits your home best!

Chances are, you’ve probably heard about farmhouse style. After all, this interior style blew up after Joanna and Chip Gaines introduced it on their HGTV show, “Fixer-Upper.”

Traditionally, the farmhouse style began in Europe, specifically in Scandinavia and Germany.

Its name is derived from a literal farmhouse – houses that were built on farms to provide accommodation for people who owned and worked at the farm. As a result, the initial farmhouse style revolves around functionality, minimalism, and simplicity.

As time went by, the farmhouse style was brought to the US, and it gained popularity with many homeowners. People loved that the farmhouse style is warm, comfortable, and classic.

In recent years, the classic farmhouse style has evolved into a modern farmhouse. While both styles share a lot of similarities, there are a few key differences.

In this post, I will share with you everything I’ve discovered about farmhouses vs modern farmhouses. Read on to find out more about:

What is farmhouse style?

Classic farmhouse style

Classic farmhouse style prioritizes practicality and simplicity. That’s why decor is kept to a minimum.

Besides that, the farmhouse style uses plenty of warm, earthy colors and naturally-weathered textures like wood.

In a nutshell, farmhouse-style homeowners place a heavy emphasis on keeping the home cozy and inviting.

While the farmhouse style may seem like a fad due to its current popularity, this particular style doesn’t favor trends! They prefer to stick to timeless elements – proving once again that function is more important than aesthetics.

What is modern farmhouse style?

The modern farmhouse style takes some elements from the classic farmhouse style and combines them with a more minimal and modern design.

Think of the modern farmhouse style as the elevated version of the traditional farmhouse style. It’s sophisticated but still provides comfort and warmth.

Differences between classic farmhouse vs modern farmhouse style

Although both styles are very similar, there are subtle differences between the classic farmhouse and modern farmhouse styles.

Before we jump into the differences, let’s take a look at the similarities between both styles.

Common elements in farmhouse vs modern farmhouse:

  • Wood as the main material used in the house
  • Neutral color palette
  • Large and comfortable furniture
  • Wrought iron/metal accents
  • Wood floors
  • Farmhouse sink
  • Open shelving
  • Barn doors
  • Mudroom
  • Fireplace

Now, let’s take a look at the differences between both styles!

Architecture and layout

Firstly, let’s look at architecture and layout. Today, many modern farmhouses retain similar architectural elements as their traditional counterpart such as exposed beams and wraparound porches.

But, one key difference between both styles is that modern farmhouses usually go for open concept floor plans and larger windows.

Besides that, a modern farmhouse is less elaborate than a classic farmhouse when it comes to detailing. You definitely won’t find crown molding in a modern farmhouse!

Instead, it is common to see simple detailing like a board and batten wall or shiplap paneling in a modern farmhouse.

Furnishings

When it comes to both styles, less is more. Both styles lean towards the minimal side – choosing comfortable and practical furniture over over-decorating.

However, the biggest difference is that the classic farmhouse usually has vintage furniture whereas the modern farmhouse tends to go for contemporary pieces. This type of furniture is lightweight and practical for everyday use.

Colors

Both styles are known for their neutral color palette. Think white, off-white, cream, and taupe. Additional shades include blues, soft grays, and sage green.

But, the key to getting the modern farmhouse look is to add colors that contrast beautifully against neutral backgrounds. For example, black accents in the house add depth to light and airy neutral spaces.

Materials

Wood is the primary material used in both styles. However, a modern farmhouse will also use other materials like stainless steel and polished stone.

Another feature that sets both styles apart is that the modern farmhouse keeps things visually interesting by adding different textures. This helps to bring out the details in a neutral space.

You can find textures like rattan, cotton, wicker, and linens in a modern farmhouse. Although they look modern, these natural textures still go with the overall farmhouse look.

Besides that, lighting also plays an important role in a modern farmhouse. Black lantern pendant lighting is a staple in a modern farmhouse.
