These factors will help you pick chairs that don’t just look great, but are comfy to sit in, fit your home nicely, and last for years.

Chair Material

When it comes to choosing dining chairs, I always start by looking at the style and colour of the dining table first.

Look at the dining table legs – are they made from wood, powder-coated steel, chrome, or brass?

From there, look for materials that complement rather than compete.

Wooden and upholstered chairs add warmth and feel more relaxed, while powder-coated steel or chrome legs keep things feeling sleek and modern.

Chair Height

You may not notice how important chair height is… until you sit down at the dining table and realise something feels off.

Make sure there’s enough legroom between the seat and the underside of your dining table (typically about 25–30 cm or 10–12 inches).

If your table is thicker or has a structural bar underneath, double-check the seat height before purchasing your dining chairs.

Any dining chair that is too tall or too low for the dining table will cause discomfort.

p/s: no reasonable adult wants to feel like they’re sitting at a kids’ table!

Chair Width

Chair width is one of the most overlooked details, but also one of the most important.

Before purchasing any dining chair, check the width of the dining chair and measure it against the length of your dining table.

This simple trick helps you to identify how many chairs will comfortably fit along your table (without anyone elbowing each other!)

My sister learned this the hard way. Her faux leather dining chairs didn’t stand a chance against my nieces’ curious little fingers!

Dining Chair Review

My glass dining table has warm walnut wooden legs, so I picked chairs that would complement both materials.

The white boucle chairs, on the other hand, are a bit lighter.

Technically, yes, they do. And, I know this because they were my first dining chairs!

When I bought my glass dining table 7 years ago, I chose acrylic dining chairs to match the table.

I thought the combination worked well since I wanted to make my dining area look bigger.

Since both materials are see through, I liked the light and airy feel they brought to the overall space.

To keep my dining area from feeling too sterile, I added two upholstered dining chairs at each end of the dining table.

But… I’ll be honest. After a few years of having this dining room setup, it started to feel a little… flat.

I figured if I could see and feel the plants up close, I’d know exactly what to look for next time I shop online.

After spending hours browsing in-store (pretty sure the sales associate thought I was going to move in at some point), I’ve learned exactly what makes faux plants look convincingly natural AND what gives them away.

The best part? I found a faux tree so convincing, even my guests thought it was real! SCORE!

Even though you’re buying a faux plant, you should choose artificial plants that look like they belong in your area.

After all, a faux plant that clearly wouldn’t survive indoors (or even grow locally) is never going to pass off as a real plant.

Stick with timeless and versatile greenery like olive trees, ficus, eucalyptus, or a classic fiddle leaf fig.

These styles aren’t overly seasonal and tend to blend naturally into most home decor, no matter the time of year.

Avoid bright colors

If you take a good look outside your window and really observe the greenery around you, you’ll find forest green, olive green, mild yellow, and earthy brown and red hues.

Look even closer, and you’ll realize that real plants usually have a muted color palette and natural color variations.

That’s why one of the biggest giveaways of a fake plant is when the color is too bright or completely uniform.

When I was browsing in-store, the artificial plants were all grouped together. This actually made it a lot easier for me to spot the fake-looking ones.

The first ones that stood out as fake to me were the ones with overly bright or unnaturally colored leaves. They just looked super plasticky and cheap.

So if you want faux plants that look real, skip anything too vibrant or identical.

Always look out for plants with nature-inspired tones instead.

And if you’re ever unsure, just snap a photo of the greenery outside and pull it up to compare!

Zoom in on the details

I was in the store browsing for hours because I was literally inspecting every single detail of each plant.

First, I looked at the leaves and checked for the following details:

• Do they have realistic veining? The more texture and detail the leaves have, the realer the plant looks!
• Are they opaque or see through? Opaque leaves are a good sign, as they look more natural.
• Do they look the same on both sides? Real leaves usually don’t look identical on both sides.
• Are they matte or shiny? Matte with a slight satin sheen mimics real leaves whereas anything overly shiny looks like plastic.

Then I moved on to the stems, branches, and trunk.

• Are they all the same size? Some variations will make them look way more realistic and natural.
• Are they perfectly smooth and glossy? This is a big no-no. Look out for a rough surface, small bumps, and imperfections.

If you’re shopping online, hit the zoom button and take a closer look at the photos.

These small details make all the difference in choosing faux plants that look real.

Examine the texture

You might not be able to do this when shopping online, but if you’re in-store, take a minute to actually hold the leaves, stems, and trunk and get a feel for the texture.

Leaves should have a mix of smooth and slightly textured surfaces to mimic the natural variation you’d see on a real plant.

As for the stems, branches, and trunk, look for rough, uneven textures – just like the kind you’d find if you ran your hand along a real tree outside!

If you’re shopping online, zoom in on the product photos and check for close-ups of the leaves, branches and trunk.

If everything looks too smooth, flat, or shiny, chances are the plant is not going to look realistic in person.

And, remember to check out the reviews! They often have real-life photos that are way more telling than (airbrushed) product images.

Embrace imperfections

I know it feels strange to embrace imperfections when you’re buying something brand new.

But, when it comes to choosing faux plants that look real, these little flaws are exactly what you need to look out for!

At the store, I noticed the most realistic-looking plants weren’t perfect at all.

The branches were not symmetrical. Some had more leaves, others had fewer.

A few leaves had different shades of green and some had slight bends.

The stems weren’t identical either – some had bumps or subtle twists that gave them a more natural look.

If a plant looks too polished or too perfect… it’s probably going to read as fake.

Pick the right size for your space

One of the most common mistakes I see is people choosing the wrong plant size for their space.

Even if the plant itself looks super realistic, it’s going to look off if it’s too small for the room.

Scale is important when it comes to purchasing and positioning artificial plants.

A tiny plant looks lost and out of place in a large, open space. And trust me, that’s the complete opposite effect you’d want from a faux plant!

A faux plant looks real if it looks like it belongs, almost as if like it’s been growing there all along.

When in doubt, size up and go for a taller tree. A slightly larger plant almost always looks better than one that’s too small.

Invest in quality materials

These days, most faux or artificial plants are made from a mix of materials like polyester, polyurethane, latex, and silicone.

Unless you’re super familiar with each material, it can be challenging to tell which one is “better” just by looking.

When I was in my local store, I noticed that the higher the price tag, the more realistic the faux plant looks.

But from my experience, the more detailed and better-constructed plants are usually more expensive.

These usually come with wired stems and leaves (which let you bend and shape them into a more natural position) and hand-painted trunks, branches, and stems.

Upgrade the pot it came in

Many artificial plants come in tiny black plastic pots.

Not only do they instantly give away that they’re fake, but they also cheapen the entire look!

Let’s face it, large plants can’t thrive in tiny pots in real life.

A tiny pot will only stump the plant’s growth.

Plus, its roots will eventually outgrow the space and break the pot. (Sadly, I speak from experience…)

So if your faux plant is still sitting in that default tiny black pot… everyone can tell it’s fake.

The easiest fix? Repot your plant! Pop it into a larger, more substantial pot.

I recommend going with a ceramic or terracotta pot since these materials are what we typically use for real plants in our gardens.

If the plant sits too low, stack empty shoeboxes or a few bricks inside to boost the height.

Then cover the top with real potting soil or moss for a fresh-out-of-the-nursery look.

This one simple switch makes a huge difference in how real your faux plant looks!

5 Simple Hacks To Make Your Faux Plants Look Real

If you already have a couple of artificial plants at home, these 5 simple hacks can help make your faux plants look real.

Fluff and shape your faux plants

If your faux plant comes in a box, you’ll need to take some time to fluff and shape them, or the leaves will look flat and clumpy. A little fluffing and adjusting goes a long way!

Don’t forget to gently bend the wired stems and leaves so they don’t sit too stiff or look perfectly symmetrical.

Repot faux plants

Ditch the cheap plastic container your faux plants come in.

Repot them in a ceramic or terracotta pot with real soil, moss, or stones on top to hide the base.

Dust your faux plants frequently

Give your faux plants a good dusting before going in with a soft cloth to keep them looking fresh.

Keep your faux plants away from sunlight

Keep your faux plants out of direct sunlight because UV rays can cause artificial plants to fade, which will make them look fake over time.

Instead, place them in spots where you would place real plants, preferably without harsh light hitting them all day!

Mix faux plants with real plants

If you have a mix of real and faux plants, scatter them around your home together.

I have both types in my home, and I can assure you this trick makes the faux plants less noticeable.

Can I Use Faux Plants Outdoors?

I know there are some UV-treated outdoor faux plants that are great for covered porches, patios, and balconies.

I’ve also heard that using a UV-protectant spray helps provide extra protection and makes them last longer outside.

Personally, I haven’t tried placing a faux plant outdoors yet. I’ve seen cafes do it, and honestly… they end up looking faded and sad pretty quickly.

On that note, constantly replacing them feels expensive and wasteful.

3 Unique & Neutral Christmas Tree Ideas

In 2021, I decided to go for my first neutral Christmas tree.

I like to think of this Christmas tree decor as my take on a fun, whimsical, modern boho style.

There are no rules — just pure creativity and going with the flow!

In 2022, I decided to embrace a simpler, more minimal style for my Christmas tree.

I wanted something that felt traditional but with a few modern touches to keep it fresh.

To me, this still feels like a timeless, classic tree – one that I think would look just as beautiful for years to come.

Last year, I decided to shake things up completely and skipped the usual Christmas baubles and ornaments.

This tree turned out to be the most unique one I’ve ever done. It was grand, luxurious, and an absolute showstopper!

A Modern Traditional Christmas Tree

This modern traditional tree is a complete contrast to the one I did the year before!

For this look, I started by layering gold beaded garlands to add a touch of elegance.

Then, I added white and gold baubles in different sizes and textures – some smooth, some sparkly – to give the tree a lovely, balanced feel.

It was so fun to create something a bit more classic, while still keeping it fresh with those modern touches.

My favorite part of the entire tree has to be the white and black ribbons I added.

I just love how they bring a subtle feminine touch that makes the tree feel extra special and beautiful.

The only thing I’d change is the black ribbons. They blend in with the dark green branches and you can’t really see them in photos.

If I could redo it, I’d go all white and double up on the ribbons to give the tree even more impact.

For this tree topper, I went with a gold star frame since I was leaning towards a more traditional vibe.

The best part about this neutral Christmas tree?

It required minimal effort to pull together. Plus, everything was super affordable!

Honestly, I’m so happy with how everything turned out. It’s one of those trees that just feels timeless and simple yet stunning.

A Unique Floral Christmas Tree

I hadn’t planned on doing a floral tree, but when I spotted these gorgeous flower picks at my local store, I was instantly sold.

They were simply too beautiful to pass up!

It definitely doesn’t feel like a traditional tree, but flowers for Christmas? Groundbreaking!!!

The key to putting together this floral tree was mixing and matching blooms of all different sizes and adding in a variety of picks.

The dining room makeover has been a long time in the making, but I’m so pleased with how everything turned out.

The dining room is hands-down my favourite space in our home now.

Before Dining Room Makeover

Six years ago, my interior style was more bohemian, so I wanted my dining room to have a vibrant, tropical vibe.

I loved using plants as decor, bringing in natural elements that added to the room’s airy feel.

To complement the bright and airy vibe I loved so much, I opted for a glass dining table and clear acrylic chairs, keeping the space light and uncluttered.

However, over time, I noticed that the elements started blending together, lacking the visual contrast I had hoped for.

A few years ago, I hung a tree-print artwork on the wall.

I thought it would add more character to the dining room, but the piece didn’t quite fit the tropical-bohemian vibe.

Not to mention, its size was too small for the wall, making it feel out of place.

Although the dining room didn’t look terrible, it never truly felt like me.

The space lacked a clear identity and felt disjointed.

It just didn’t align with the vision I had in mind, and despite the effort I put into decorating, it never clicked the way I wanted it to.

The room wasn’t cohesive or personal – it felt more like a collection of ideas rather than an intentional reflection of my style.

In the end, I just didn’t feel connected to the space, which made it hard to fully enjoy.

After Dining Room Makeover

After making a few thoughtful adjustments, the dining room finally feels like the space I had envisioned all along.

It now feels warm, cozy, and inviting, all of which perfectly aligns with my personal style at this stage of my life.

The room no longer feels forced; instead, it reflects a cohesive, intentional design that feels like me.

The transformation lies in the small but impactful details, which made all the difference.

Dining Room Decor Details

A Fresh Coat Of Paint

In 2022, I collaborated with Vasari to repaint the apartment using their limewash paint. We used Vasari’s Linen White for the dining room wall.

The moment I saw the new wall colour, it gave me the creative spark I needed to dive into a full dining room makeover.

I immediately thought the soft, textured finish of the limewash added so much depth to the space, making the room feel both moody and inviting at the same time.

The subtle warmth of Vasari’s Linen White created the perfect backdrop and set the tone for the entire dining room makeover.

Swap Out The Furniture

The next step in the makeover was swapping out the furniture.

I had been meaning to replace the acrylic chairs for a while — one had broke, and more importantly, they weren’t comfortable enough for long meals.

I know, I know, what was I thinking in the first place?!

Anyway, when I came across this set of white boucle chairs, I instantly fell in love.

Their soft, curved shape felt like the perfect contrast to the hard edges of my dining table, adding balance and visual interest to the space.

What also drew me to the chairs was their sleek and sophisticated black legs.

Since black naturally draws attention and gives the space a sense of focus, I’ve been wanting to introduce touches of black to the dining room.

These new chairs not only made the dining area more comfortable but also brought in the right mix of softness and structure.

That’s not all! Since I’ve always loved the charm of mismatched dining chairs, I wanted to carry that concept into the dining room makeover.

This time, I decided to pair the boucle chairs with natural rattan and wood armchairs.

The wood armchairs are my husband’s favourite. They’re made from real wood, so the beautiful natural grain stands out.

I love how these two chair styles complement each other: the softness of the boucle contrasts well with the rattan and wood textures.

Plus, both chairs are SO comfortable.

One thing’s for sure – I learned my lesson the hard way. So, it was very important to me that the dining area is as practical as it is stylish!

Choose The Right Artwork

The hardest part of the dining room makeover was choosing the right artwork.

This time, I wanted something personal that truly resonated with me. Nothing generic or mass-produced!

Fortunately, I connected with a local artist, Carissa from Wildflower Culture, who offered to create a custom piece based on a story I wanted to express.

I immediately jumped on board. I’d be crazy to turn down a unique and meaningful piece of art!

I shared with her how I’ve been navigating grief over the past few years and how my love for the beach has been a source of comfort during that time.

She understood my vision perfectly and designed a piece called Beach Mornings to reflect those emotions.

This time, I also made sure the artwork was the right size and scale for the wall.

When the artwork arrived, it fit seamlessly into the room’s design.

Be Intentional With Decor

Sadly, all of my plants have died, but I still wanted a green element to bring life to the space.

I decided to invest in my first large faux plant, which fits perfectly in the corner of the dining room.

If you’re buying a faux plant, it’s essential to repot it.

Faux plants often come in small plastic containers that immediately give away their artificial nature.

I chose a larger decorative pot and filled the top with moss to create a more natural, realistic look.

You should also look out for the colour of the leaves and the texture of the branches. Avoid leaves that are bright green and branches that are too smooth.

When shopping for faux plants, I like to go for ones with small imperfections because they mimic the natural flaws of real plants, making them appear more lifelike.

My Ikea Furniture Pick For Home Office – Linnmon Tabletop + Alex Drawers + Mittback Trestle

This was my first home office set up when we moved in six years ago.

Since I’d been using a similar set up in my previous workplace, I knew I could replicate this cute, cheap and durable combo from Ikea.

The Linnmon tabletop is great for creatives because it’s huge and it costs less than $20. It also comes in two colours – white and black.

Since I needed storage space for things like stationery, documents and files, I opted for the Alex Drawers and Mittback Trestle instead of traditional legs.

I’ll be honest – the trestle is definitely for aesthetic purposes because it doesn’t hold much.

The Alex drawers, however, are amazing for storage. The drawers glide in and out easily, even after six years!

I’ve always dreamed of having a walk-in wardrobe, and having the Ikea Elvarli storage system felt the closest to having one!

One of the things that drew me towards the Elvarli system is the clever use of open and closed storage.

I love seeing my clothes hanging in my wardrobe so having an open wardrobe was a no-brainer.

In fact, this set-up only had two large drawers and two small drawers when we first moved in.

I was looking for a vanity table that combined open and concealed storage (I swear this is the recurring theme for all of the furniture pieces in my home!) but couldn’t find one that I loved that was within my budget.

After five years of living without a vanity table, it finally hit me: why don’t I just find something simple and affordable on Ikea?

The Kallax is absolutely perfect if you want a combination of open and concealed storage.

For now, I fitted my Kallax with four drawers and two small cabinets, which has sufficient storage to accommodate my makeup and skincare.

Should I ever need more concealed storage, I know I can always add on drawers, cabinets, or even cute baskets later. That’s the beauty of a Kallax!

Of course I had to include the super popular Billy book case in this list!

The glass doors protect the bags from dust and dirt, but they still give me a clear look of all of my pretty bags.

My only regret is not buying the Billy in this beautiful oak colour and pairing it with elegant brass knobs!

Minimalist Christmas Home Tour

After using the same holiday decor since 2015, I was desperate for a change.

I’m constantly trying to build an intentional and sustainable home; so I decided to switch from a traditional red-and-green theme to a neutral minimalist Christmas theme.

Although the decor looks more subtle, the house still feels warm, cozy, and inviting.

I chose white, gold, green, and wood tones because these colours are classic, and that means I can re-use my Christmas decor year after year.

Minimalist Christmas Tree

Our minimalist neutral Christmas tree is THE showstopper in our home.

I used the same artificial tree we’ve had since 2018 but changed its placement this year.

I wanted to make a grand statement with the tree; so I shifted it from a corner in the dining room to the top of our built-in nook.

It looks AMAZING – I don’t know why it took me so long to do this! The tree is now the first thing I see when I enter our apartment.

Honestly, I didn’t have a game plan when it came to decorating the Christmas tree.

Instead of going with a theme, I referenced my colour palette and bought ornaments with different textures, shapes, and materials.

I love a traditional tree but I wanted something whimsical and organic this year.

The result is a mish-mash of ornaments that still looks cohesive because of the neutral colour palette!

I also paired the tree with a black woven skirt to add contrast. It’s the first time I’ve used a tree skirt, and it really was the BEST. DECISION. EVER.

Since we don’t have a mantel, I stuck a simple hook rack next to the tree and hung two chunky knit stockings. How cute!

Minimalist Christmas Living Room

With the tree being the main focus of the living room, I kept the other areas minimal.

I added new floral, plaid, and textured cushion covers on the couch.

As for the coffee table, I laid a wooden tray that held a basket of gold baubles, a wooden tree ornament, and two taupe pillar candles.

Despite using simple objects, the contrasting heights and textures made this minimal setup visually interesting.

I also made minor adjustments to our daily TV console decor.

I swapped the artificial fern for a mini tree and decorated it with white ceramic baubles on one side.

On the other, I added a maroon honeycomb paper tree for a pop of colour.

The final (and cutest!) touch was the Christmas village placed at the centre of the console.

Minimalist Christmas Kitchen

This spot was my second favorite space to decorate after the tree. I was already thinking of the fun I was going to have styling my kitchen shelves!

For the upper shelf, I came up with a Christmas village theme.

So, I laid some faux tinsel before placing a group of ceramic houses, a wooden house, a bicycle, and a pair of bottle-brush trees. It’s all about the details here!

Minimalist Christmas Bedroom

I wasn’t planning on decorating our bedroom until I received these gorgeous sage green sheets from Sunday Bedding (check out the feature they did of me here!)

The sheets just screamed HOLIDAY, so I immediately replaced our existing sheets in time for the festive season.

I wanted the rest of the decor to compliment the sheets, so I layered an artificial garland across our bedframe.

I also added a couple of fun ornaments like velvet hearts, gold stars, and a mini tree on the garland.

Since the garland isn’t pre-lit, I strung some lights over the garland.
