Make the bed every morning

If I’m being completely honest, I never used to make my bed every morning until I met my husband (then boyfriend!)

He told me that making the bed every morning can make a big difference in how a home feels.

And you know what? He’s absolutely right!

When the bed is made, the whole room instantly looks tidier.

It also feels like a small win first thing in the morning, which for some reason, makes me feel like I’m going to be just as productive for the rest of the day.

And at the end of a long day, I can honestly say nothing feels more relaxing than climbing into a neatly made bed.

So if you’ve ever wondered whether those five minutes in the morning are really worth it, it’s a wholehearted yes from me.

You might not even notice it at first, but a smooth, tidy bed reduces visual clutter.

And, that small sense of order can quietly lower your stress and make for a peaceful home.

Keep the living room tidy every night before bed

Now, I know it’s not always realistic to deep clean the entire apartment or house every day, especially if you have kids or pets running around.

But one habit that’s truly changed things for me is resetting the living room every night before bed.

Why? Well, simply because the living room is the FIRST thing I see when I step out of my bedroom in the morning. And, starting my day with a tidy, clean view instantly puts me in a better headspace.

Waking up to a clean living room makes me feel like I’m starting fresh – no matter how bad the day before was.

It’s my way of making sure the living room reflects my state of mind every morning – fresh, calm, and peaceful!

Since it’s just my husband and me in our apartment (for now…), keeping the living room tidy doesn’t take much time at all.

Every night, I…

• Fold the throw blanket and fluff the throw pillows
• Clear and wipe down the coffee table
• Toss any trash
• Switch off all of the electronics

That’s it – just a quick reset that makes the space feel calm again!

I’m sure this routine will change once we have kids, so I’ll be sure to update these steps when that happens!

Get a robot vacuum for daily cleaning + hire a housekeeper once a month to deep clean

I think many of you will relate to this – I love a clean home, but I don’t actually love cleaning.

But, over time, my husband and I have created a simple home cleaning routine that keeps our place looking tidy without constant cleaning.

Instead of doing everything ourselves, we focus on systems that work in the background and habits that make daily upkeep easier.

One of the biggest game-changers for us was investing in a robot vacuum that vacuums and mops.

We run it daily on a timer while we’re at work, so when we come home at the end of the day, the floors are already taken care of.

If there’s one thing I’d genuinely recommend splurging on for your home, it’s a robot vacuum.

It saves time, effort, and mental load. And I promise, once you have one, there’s no going back!!!

The second decision we made was to hire a housekeeper once a month for a deep clean.

I know this is a privilege, and it’s something we had to budget intentionally for.

We spend less in other areas so we can protect our time and energy here. Instead of spending entire weekends cleaning bathrooms and scrubbing floors, we get to rest and actually enjoy our home.

Our housekeeper follows our full deep-clean checklist, which keeps our home maintenance manageable in between visits.

Knowing a full reset is coming every month makes everyday tidying feel far less overwhelming for me too.

If you want to keep a clean home without constant cleaning, focusing on the right tools and routines can make all the difference.

Do the dishes right away after meals

I know doing the dishes isn’t exactly anyone’s favorite chore, but I can’t stress enough how much easier it is to wash them right after meals instead of putting it off.

When you clean up immediately, everything rinses off so much faster.

But once food dries onto plates, bowls, and pots, it becomes stubborn, sticky, and frankly…. pretty gross.

If you use a dishwasher, you’ll probably end up scrubbing everything anyway just to get the dried bits off (and that’s double the work you were trying to avoid in the first place!)

Also, let’s be honest: nothing disrupts the feeling of a clean home more than the lingering smell of dirty dishes left in the sink!

Look, I won’t pretend this was easy in the beginning. The last thing I want to do after cooking (especially when I’ve used half the kitchen) is clean up!

But the more I committed to washing things right away, the more it felt like second nature to me.

At the end of the day, I’m all about convenience and not creating extra chores for myself.

A quick rinse now is so much better than a full-on scrubbing session later!

No outside clothes on the bed

Now, this is an Asian household, so you already know one of the home rules to live by is our strict “no outdoor shoes inside” rule.

I know people have mixed opinions about this, but honestly… if your shoes have been everywhere, the last place they should be is inside your home.

Otherwise, you’ll end up cleaning far more often than you need to. Just imagine all the dirt and grime you’re tracking in!

If you’re not used to being barefoot indoors, I highly recommend getting a pair of soft indoor slippers. I have a pair I love – they’re cozy, warm, and snug (better than any outdoor shoes imho!)

Similarly, we also follow a “no outside clothes on the bed” policy.

That means showering and changing into our home clothes (which we only wear at home – think sweats, cute lounge clothes, and pjs) before getting into bed.

For me, our bed is a little sanctuary, and I want to keep it as clean as possible.

You never know what your clothes have brushed up against outdoors (public seating, dusty corners, and crowded spaces!) – so I try not to bring any of that into the one place I want to feel completely clean and calm!

I know it might sound like a lot, and I might sound like a borderline neat freak, but these small habits truly improve my day.

Slipping into a clean bed, wearing fresh clothes, and knowing your space is clean and peaceful actually helps me sleep better!

Make sure everything within our home has a home

When everything in your home has a home, you’ll naturally end up with fewer cluttered surfaces. And, that is amazing because it means you’ll have fewer things to clean up!

In our home, keys always go in the entryway console drawer, linens stay in the linen cupboard, and books live in the bookcase.

If I start struggling to find space for something, that’s usually my cue that I have too much stuff and it’s time for me to declutter.

Creating designated homes for your belongings means once you’re done using something, you can put it right back where it belongs.

No random piles on the floor, no “temporary” spots that become permanent, and no more surfaces disappearing under clutter!

It’s a small mindset shift, but believe me, this will keep your home calm, organized, and easier to maintain.

Have a lot of stuff but only one storage space? No worries! In the photo above, you can see that I organized my hall closet by section, using different containers and baskets to separate items. This way, everything has its own spot, and it’s so much easier to find what I need without creating a mess.

Display things we love

Now, I’ve talked a lot about keeping my home clean and clutter-free, but that doesn’t mean your space should feel cold or sterile.

A home should look lived in and reflect the things that bring you joy.

One of my favourite home rules to live by is this: display what you truly love.

For me, that’s ceramics and pretty tableware, so I style my floating shelves with pieces that make me smile every time I walk past.

I also keep my bag collection in my Ikea Billy case – partly for storage, but mostly because seeing them all lined up beautifully just makes me happy!

The key is to give these special items a designated home.

When they’re displayed with intention (grouped thoughtfully, given breathing room, and arranged neatly), they add personality without creating visual clutter.

But when they’re scattered randomly around the house, even the prettiest things can look messy and chaotic.

So choose a few categories of items you love, decide exactly where they’ll live, and let them shine.

Set the table whenever we host

Similarly, a house truly becomes a home when it’s filled with memories, especially the kind we create with family and friends.

For me, that often happens around the dining table. I genuinely love setting the table whenever we host!

I know it might seem like “extra work,” but the joy on my friends’ faces when they sit down to a beautiful tablescape makes every minute worth it.

Setting the table feels like my small way of showing love and making people feel special.

But here’s the thing: tablescapes don’t need to be fancy, complicated, or expensive.

Most of my everyday tablescapes are incredibly simple.

I reuse pieces I already own, mix and match what I have, and create relaxed setups that are perfect for casual meals where there are zero rules.

Decorate with intention

Another one of my favourite home rules to live by is to decorate with intention.

While I love keeping up with home decor trends, I don’t want my home to feel like a carbon copy of whatever is popular on Instagram that week.

That’s why I try to decorate with pieces that carry meaning or tell a story.

When you choose decor intentionally, your home feels more you.

Take my little gallery wall in my home office.

At first glance, it looks like a collection of simple art pieces, but every single item has a memory attached to it.

Many of them are postcards from friends over the years. I even framed a poem my best friend wrote for me when we were sixteen.

And that star map? It shows the exact constellation on the night and in the place my husband and I first met.

If you’re trying to make your home feel more personal, fill it with things that make you smile every time you walk past them.

Frame a meaningful note, display a souvenir from a trip, or choose decor that reflects your hobbies or history.

Have two kitchen sinks

This might not be an option for everyone, but if you’re planning a kitchen renovation, please consider building two kitchen sinks!

We have two, and it makes life so much easier, especially when hosting.

One sink can be full of dishes or food prep, while the other is free for guests to use.

Even just for the two of us at home, having two sinks is a huge convenience.

One of us can tackle the dishes while the other washes fruits, vegetables, or even just rinses something by hand.

It keeps the kitchen workflow seamless and prevents cross-contamination when prepping food.

If you ever have the chance to add a second sink, it’s one of those investments that pays off in everyday convenience.

What Is Regular Cleaning?

Regular cleaning is also known as standard cleaning or basic cleaning. It consists of all the tasks you should do regularly to keep your house hygienic and fresh (don’t miss my regular cleaning checklist below!).

Typically, regular cleaning is done at least once a week to help maintain a level of cleanliness around the house.

Some people prefer to have a Sunday reset, where they dedicate their entire Sunday around household cleaning and errand running so they can get organized for the upcoming week.

If spending a whole day cleaning sounds daunting, you can also break these tasks up and do a couple of things each day. After all, it’s your home so choose a schedule that works for YOU.

These cleaning tasks generally don’t take that long to complete; however, they are essential to keep your home free from dust, dirt, and grime.

Regular Cleaning Checklist

A regular cleaning will usually include most or all of the following: 

General

• Cleaning, sweeping/vacuuming, and mopping floors in each room
• Vacuuming carpets and rugs
• Wiping down mirrors and windows in each room
• General dusting (e.g. removing cobwebs/dust/debris on furniture, surfaces, light fixtures, doors, windows, and vents)
• Doing the laundry
• Taking out the trash from each room
• General tidying and organizing in each room

Kitchen

• Washing dishes and putting dishes away
• Scrubbing the sink
• Wiping the countertops and appliances such as cooktops, refrigerators, and microwaves
• Washing kitchen towels, dish rags, aprons, and other linens

Bathroom(s)

• Cleaning and disinfecting bathroom fixtures e.g. shower stalls, sinks, toilets, and bathtubs

Bedroom(s)

• Making the bed
• Changing bed linens

What Is Deep Cleaning?

Some people assume deep cleaning means taking care of the things you didn’t do during regular cleaning.

Yes, this is partially true because we may not have sufficient time to tackle every task. Some chores like cleaning the oven and scrubbing grout take a long time.

Therefore, a deep cleaning is required to complete the tasks we miss during regular cleaning.

However, deep cleaning also includes doing regular cleaning duties but more thoroughly.

Things that are hard to reach or neglected are hand-wiped or scrubbed to get rid of dirt, grime, soap scum, and more. Additionally, sanitizing and disinfecting are also carried out during a deep cleaning session.

The biggest difference between regular cleaning vs deep cleaning lies in the attention to detail. Deep cleaning is more comprehensive than regular cleaning. As a result, it takes more time and effort. Plus, it costs more if outsourced.

It is necessary to deep clean at least two or three times a year, as deep cleaning creates a healthy and hygienic environment for your family. Deep cleaning helps to get rid of germs like bacteria and viruses that can make your family ill. Not to mention, your home will look spotless and smell fresh.

Deep Cleaning Checklist

Besides regular cleaning chores, a deep cleaning session will usually include most or all of the following:

Regular Cleaning vs Deep Cleaning – What’s The Difference?

There are 4 main differences between regular cleaning vs deep cleaning.

Attention to detail

Deep cleaning is extensive compared to regular cleaning. Deep cleaning pays attention to every little detail. Cleaning will take place from top to bottom, left to right, and in every nook and cranny in each room.

Frequency

Regular cleaning is done at least once a week whereas deep cleaning can be done two to three times a year.

Duration

Deep cleaning takes a much longer time to complete compared to regular cleaning. Regular cleaning usually takes a few hours. On the other hand, deep cleaning can span over one or two days.

Cost

Want to outsource both regular and deep cleaning? Bear in mind that deep cleaning will set you back more money than regular cleaning. Deep cleaning can cost up to three times more than regular cleaning.

Pros and Cons of Deep Cleaning

Pros

Creates a healthy and hygienic environment

A dirty and cluttered home can lead to the presence of dust mites, mold, and germs. All of these can lead to harmful viruses, which can affect you and your family’s health. Deep cleaning can help to eliminate these damaging health risks.

Provides a welcoming ambience

A clean home is an inviting home. Once you’ve deep cleaned your home, you won’t feel embarrassed to invite family and friends over. The state of your home also affects your mental health. The cleaner your home, the happier you’ll feel.

Saves you time and money in the long run

The longer you put off deep cleaning, the dirtier your home will be. If your home reaches this dreadful state, I’m afraid it will cost you even more time and money to clean your home.

Time-consuming

Deep cleaning is a labor-intensive process, which requires a lot of time, especially if you haven’t done it in a while. If you have a busy schedule, you may find deep cleaning difficult and overwhelming.

If you have the budget for it, I recommend hiring a cleaning service. Some cleaning providers require a deep clean for first-time customers. Once you’ve had a deep cleaning session, you should keep up with your regular cleaning to make deep cleaning easier for you next time.

Stressful

Deep cleaning can be a stressful and exhausting experience, especially if you’re also juggling work and childcare. Not only does it take up a lot of time, but it calls for a lot of effort and energy.

Expensive

Don’t have time or energy to deep clean? You can always book a cleaning service. A deep clean is usually more expensive than a standard clean. Depending on the size of your home, deep cleaning services can range from $300 – $1,000.

When Should You Deep Clean?

You should deep clean at least once a year. I recommend 2-3 times a year if you or anyone in your household has allergies.

Other times include when…

• Moving out of a rental
• Moving into a new home
• When selling your home
• Your home needs spring cleaning

You may not have time to declutter daily and that’s OK.

Make it a point to declutter at least once a week though.

If you do this weekly, each session should take you about 15-20 minutes.

Go through your paperwork and see if there’s anything you can scan, file, or shred/toss.

Give your computer screen, keyboard, and mouse a good wipe-down.

Clean your desk and arrange your essentials neatly.

4. Create an organizing system that works for you

Done with decluttering? Great! It’s time to start organizing.

The key to an effective organization system is to make sure each item on your desk has a place to call home.

For instance, pens and pencils go into a stationery caddy. Files go into a storage cabinet. Electronics go into a desk organizer.

Here are five simple steps to create a minimalist jewelry collection:

1. Evaluate your lifestyle

As we grow older, it’s common to experience lifestyle changes. For example, you might be a mother now and childcare is all on you. Or perhaps you have a job that doesn’t permit you to wear jewelry.

You may still be holding on to all of your jewelry from high school or college days, but let’s be honest. When was the last time you wore them?

That’s why it’s so important to evaluate your lifestyle. Answer the questions below truthfully to figure out which jewelry you’ll be wearing most often:

• Does your job allow you to wear jewelry?
• If yes, are there any rules regarding this policy?
• Are you a stay-at-home mother who’s with young children all the time?
• How active is your current lifestyle? E.g. are you someone who’s on your feet a lot or do you enjoy doing outdoor activities?
• Do you often attend formal occasions like events and weddings?

Write your answers down in your notebook or on your phone, so you can come back and refer to them later.

2. Gather all of your jewelry

But, there’s no point in liking and keeping your jewelry if you don’t wear them! You may want to keep a couple of sentimental family heirlooms, but the majority of your collection should be pieces you like and wear often.

You DON’T need a lot of jewelry if you’re…

There are certain materials like copper that can cause chemical reactions. I still remember when my finger turned green when I wore cheap costume jewelry.

If this happens to you, you may want to invest in pure gold or silver jewelry. If that’s above your budget, try stainless steel or sterling silver jewelry, or gold-plated sterling silver jewelry, also known as vermeil or demi-fine jewelry.

Custom engagement ring – Since I’ve been married, my engagement ring and wedding band are the only rings I wear daily. My engagement ring is custom by a local jeweler, but the design is inspired by Catbird’s Violette The Swan. I fell in love the minute I saw it, and I still love it as much today!

Custom wedding band – I wanted something simple to pair with my engagement ring, so we went with the same local jeweler to custom-make a half-eternity band similar to this Edge of Ember version. I’m so pleased with how the combination turned out. It’s exactly like how I pictured my wedding stack to be – pretty, elegant, and delicate.

Statement ring – I love statement rings but can’t pull them off because I have short and stubby fingers. If you prefer something bold, I highly recommend getting a stacker ring or a croissant dome-shaped ring. All you need is one ring to complete your look!

Bangles / Bracelets

Gold classic bangles – I’ve been wearing a trio of gold bangles (a gift from my late grandmother) for as long as I can remember. Unfortunately, one is a little wonky and keeps slipping off, so I’m down to just two for now.

I’m not one to stack wristwear because they can be a little noisy and off-putting especially when I’m typing away on my computer. But, I love the look of one solid bangle or a delicate bracelet on a wrist. It just looks so elegant!

I like a little sparkle in my jewelry, and this pair is great for both day and night.

Pearl earrings – Pearl studs are a classic. They match with every outfit and are casual yet polished enough for everyday wear.

Statement earrings – Of all the different jewelry categories, earrings are my absolute favorite. That’s why my jewelry collection consists of mostly earrings. I’m usually in my hoops, but on special occasions, I like to switch them out for statement earrings. These are my favorites:

• Drop earrings – The Sunseeker Earrings are my go-to for girls’ nights out and date nights. Although they’re not made from solid gold or vermeil, I haven’t experienced any allergies to them due to the nickel-free stainless steel earring posts. I’ve had them for about five years now, and they still look brand new!

Since I started sharing snippets of my home on social media, one of the questions I get asked most frequently is “Where’s your pantry?”

Well, I don’t have one!

When we renovated our home five years ago, we didn’t have a budget for a pantry.

Plus, we were very busy with our jobs and barely had the time nor the energy to whip up meals in the kitchen! As a result, we didn’t see the need for a pantry at that time.

However, a lot has changed since then. The kitchen is one of our most-used spaces since the pandemic.

At first, it was challenging to think of ways to organize our kitchen since we don’t have a pantry.

To top it off, we don’t have much counter space and we have a limited number of drawers and cabinets.

It took us some trial and error, but we finally figured out a few tips and tricks to organize our kitchen without a pantry.

Disclaimer: Our organization methods may not work for you if you own a ton of things in the kitchen! My husband and I don’t like clutter, so we only kept the minimal kitchen essentials.

8 Ways To Organize Your Small Kitchen Without A Pantry

1. Use a kitchen cart

If you have a small kitchen, you NEED to invest in a kitchen cart.

Kitchen/pantry/utility/bar carts are perfect to store frequently used ingredients like spices and canned goods.

But, don’t be fooled by their compact sizes! They are usually spacious enough to store a whole bunch of things without taking up much space.

The best part? They are mobile! They can be wheeled around everywhere, which makes them so convenient in the kitchen.

Not only are kitchen carts inexpensive, but they come in a wide variety of designs and materials. Our is a stainless steel version from Ikea, which we fill with spices and dry goods we use daily.

I prefer displaying all my spices because I know I won’t use them if I don’t see them!

2. Install wall shelving

Want to organize a kitchen but don’t have a pantry? Wall shelving is the answer to your problem!

Not only is wall shelving practical, but it looks stunning in a kitchen. Plus, wall shelving is affordable and super easy to install!

With a small kitchen, too many built-in cabinets can make the room look and feel even smaller. That’s why we opted for exposed wall shelving instead.

Some people think open shelving can appear more cluttered, but the trick is to display beautiful things on them and save the cabinet space for less attractive items like half-open boxes of cereal.

Otherwise, you can always conceal your everyday pantry items in baskets, which will help to maximize space and make it look pretty.

3. Build a spice wall

If your kitchen is too small to accommodate a rolling cart, consider building a spice wall instead.

The great thing about a spice wall is that you don’t need a lot of space. You can fit a few shelves in a little alcove or nook in the kitchen.

Plus, there are so many options available in the market. You can choose from stainless steel, wood, and even acrylic shelves (my favorite!) You can even find magnetic shelves to stick on your fridge!

Here’s a tip: allocate a taller height between shelves so you can fit oil/sauce dispensers on the rack too!

4. Take advantage of vertical storage

The one spot people often neglect is unused wall space. When organizing in a small kitchen with no pantry, it’s crucial to take advantage of vertical storage!

Here are some great wall storage ideas:

• Hang magnetic strips for knives
• Hang a metal rod or a wire rack that can hold baskets of fruit, utensils, tea towels, pots, pans, etc.
• Use a pegboard to store utensils, pots, spices, etc.

Organize kitchen cabinets and drawers

The key to organizing a kitchen without a pantry is to make sure your existing kitchen cabinets and drawers stay organized.

Drawers and cabinets offer plenty of storage space but they can be very cluttered if not organized well. As a result, they may not be utilized effectively.

Use bins, baskets, or drawer dividers to group and organize similar items.

Other space-saving fittings for cabinets and drawers are:

• Interior drawers or pull-outs
• Raised cabinet racks/stands
• Mug hooks
• Lazy Susans/turntables

Besides these tips, here are some other ways you can organize a small kitchen without a pantry.

Repurpose a bookcase

Got extra space in your kitchen? Create your pantry by repurposing a bookcase!

Ikea’s Billy bookcase is a great alternative to a pantry. You can customize the color of the bookcase and the type of doors to make it uniquely yours.

The best thing about a bookcase is the ample storage it provides. You can store anything from dinnerware to pantry staples in clear bins. In addition, you can also store baskets and other decorative items like plants and candles.

Use a sideboard/hutch/credenza

Sometimes we have to think outside the box. In this case, try thinking outside the kitchen!

If you have extra space in your living or dining room, try using a sideboard, a hutch, or a credenza to store your kitchen essentials.

Although they are typically used for dinnerware and table linens, you can use them to keep anything you want because of the hidden storage.

Utilize fridge space

Don’t have a pantry? No worries!

Did you know you can utilize both your fridge’s interior and exterior space?

You can fully utilize your fridge’s interior space if you organize it well.

As for the exterior, many magnetic organizers can hold a kitchen towel roll, oven mitts, cling wrap, and aluminum foil dispensers.

You can also store baskets on top of your fridge!

Maximize storage on your kitchen island

This is a great tip for new homeowners who are starting their renovation plans.

If you have no space for a pantry, consider building a bigger island with storage! You can use the island to store tableware, cookware, and other kitchen appliances too.

These tips have taught us that we don’t need a pantry to organize a small kitchen. I think we’ve done well considering we don’t have a pantry. The kitchen always looks organized and clutter-free, which I LOVE.

2. Prepare the necessary supplies

Like every decluttering project, this step keeps things moving quickly.

Prepare a few storage bins or boxes to separate the toys during the decluttering session. You’ll need at least 3 boxes (toss, keep, and donate) and a marker to label each box accordingly.

3. Gather all of your kids’ toys

If you’ve never decluttered your kids’ toys before, doing this may feel overwhelming. After all, toys have a sneaky way of accumulating in a home!

Gather all of your kids’ toys in one area in your home. This allows you and your kids to see how many toys they own at a glance.

• Baby toys: baby gyms, walkers, activity mats, sensory toys, rattles, bath toys, etc.
• Stuffed toys/animals
• Dolls: Barbies, baby dolls, accessories like strollers, push prams, dollhouses, etc.
• Imaginative play: kitchens, doctor’s sets, tools sets, role play, costumes, puppets, teepee, tents, etc.
• Building toys: LEGOs, magnet tiles, blocks, etc.
• Figurines and small toys: action figures, cars, trains, trucks, etc.
• Outdoor toys: bikes, trikes, scooters, trampoline, slides, climbs, sand and water play, etc.
• Sports equipment: balls, rackets, floats, etc.
• Musical toys
• Board games, card games, puzzles, etc.

6. Separate their favorites

Remember the notes you took while observing your children? Now’s the time to separate your kids’ favorite toys from each category.

If you can’t help it, consider practicing the “One In, One Out” rule. Each time you buy or receive something new, get rid of something you already own in the same category.

4. Set decluttering goals

You may have the best intentions to declutter, but you might not follow through if you do not have any decluttering goals.

Set a major overarching goal for why you want to declutter. Maybe you’re tired of your current lifestyle and you want to live in a clean and calm home.

Or maybe you’re depressed and decluttering will help you to feel somewhat better.

Write your goal down on a piece of paper or in a notebook. (I recommend getting a notebook to document your decluttering progress. It’s a great way to look back at your progress and see how far you’ve come!)

Underneath your primary goal, write a list of micro-goals. These goals should be SMART –  Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound.

For example:

• Declutter my bathroom cabinets by next Friday.
• Declutter my kitchen counters by the first week of July.

Seeing your goals on paper will motivate you to get started. If you find yourself losing motivation, take that piece of paper or notebook out and review your goals again.

They will remind you of the person you want to be, and hopefully, that’s enough to keep you going.

5. Create a realistic decluttering plan

If you want to declutter successfully, you’ll need to create a realistic plan.

Don’t overwhelm yourself even more by making it complicated. Just think of it as a to-do list.

Decluttering a messy home is a huge project. A plan is useful because it breaks down big tasks into small manageable ones.

When creating your plan, make sure to address the following questions:

• When will you declutter? E.g. daily, once a week, twice a week, etc.
• How long is each decluttering session? E.g. 30 minutes, an hour, 3 hours, etc.
• Which areas of your home will you declutter first? (Cross-check your plan with your goals!)
• What will you do with the things you don’t want? E.g. donate, recycle, discard, etc.

There’s no one-size-fits-all plan when it comes to decluttering. Remember to do what works best for you.

6. Start small

Don’t take on too much, especially if this is your first time decluttering. You may exhaust yourself and feel terrible after. This will only demotivate you from continuing.

Starting small helps you to avoid burnout from decluttering. The last thing you want to do is to give up when you’ve only just started!

Start small like tossing the trash out or decluttering a drawer instead of an entire room.

Whenever possible, focus on safety first like clearing the pathways between frequently used rooms, as cluttered pathways increase the risk of falls and injuries. It’s necessary to make your home safe to live in.

7. Keep decluttering short and sweet

If you’ve accumulated a lot of things over the years, it’s almost impossible to go from cluttered to organized in one decluttering session.

Let go of unrealistic expectations and accept that decluttering will take time.

You don’t have to try and do it all in a day. Keep your decluttering sessions short and sweet.

If you’re worried you might get carried away, set a timer on your phone to alert you once the session ends.

Brief decluttering sessions work best for hoarders because it makes decluttering feel more feasible. Plus, short sessions are less tiring physically and mentally.

Remember, decluttering is a marathon and not a sprint!

8. Don’t declutter and organize at the same time

Don’t take on too much by trying to declutter and organize at the same time. You’ll only get distracted and overstimulated.

Focus on decluttering first. Don’t worry about organizing, as that can come much later.

It’s a lot easier to organize the house when you’ve gotten rid of most of the stuff. Less stuff = less to organize! Imagine how much time you can save because you don’t have to clean and organize what you don’t need.

9. Be ruthless

Want to see quick progress when you’re decluttering? The secret is to be as ruthless as you can.

If you haven’t used or missed an item in three months, it needs to go. This applies to most of the categories in your home: home decor, kitchen appliances and utensils, toys, sporting equipment, sentimental items, and more.

This is not going to be easy if you have a hoarding disorder. But, this is where your family and friends can help!

Since they know you fairly well, they will be able to point out what you need and what you don’t. Listen with an open heart and accept their valuable advice.

10. Donate or discard items only

Some of you may be reluctant to declutter because you think you’re wasting money.

And, the only way to motivate you to declutter is if you can sell the items and get some money back.

Since you’ve already spent the money, it’s more wasteful to let your belongings sit around in your home collecting dust.

Although you may have some luck selling your things, selling requires a lot of time and effort. In some situations, the process may become overly stressful. It’s just not worth all the hassle!

If you already have a lot on your plate, think about donating or discarding your items only. You may not get your money back, but you are giving a second life to your things.

Furthermore, someone else in need may benefit greatly from your stuff. It’s a win-win situation!

11. Just start

Sometimes the best way to overcome your fears is to jump straight into them.

We tend to procrastinate when we’re afraid or overwhelmed.

Don’t worry about completing the job or making it look perfect.

When it comes to decluttering, small progress is still progress. Celebrate every small win! Most importantly, don’t give up and keep going.

12. Be kind to yourself

Your decluttering journey like everyone else’s will be filled with ups and downs.

There will be days when you’re on fire. Everything is going great, and you’ve done a lot.

1. Evaluate your lifestyle

First, you have to be honest with yourself and evaluate your lifestyle. Answer these questions to figure out what type of shoes you need:

• Do you work mostly indoors or outdoors?
• Are you someone who likes outdoor activities like hiking and camping?
• Do you often attend formal occasions like meetings and weddings?
• Does your lifestyle require you to be on your feet a lot? For example, if you have children or grandchildren.

Write your answers down on a piece of paper or on your phone, so you can come back and refer to them whenever necessary.

2. Gather all of your shoes

Next, gather all of your shoes in one area in your home. Seeing everything you own at a glance helps you to make better decisions.

Lay them out neatly, as you’ll be reviewing each pair in the next step.

3. Put shoes you frequently wear aside

Once you have all of your shoes in front of you, it’s time to put the shoes you frequently wear aside.

Remember, wearing a particular pair once a month does not qualify as ‘frequently’. Be honest with yourself – choose shoes you wear at least a few times a week.

4. Remove worn shoes that cannot be repaired

Done with the third step? Great!

Now, look at that pile and remove worn shoes that cannot be repaired. It’s OK if you find more than one worn pair. This means you’ve used them a lot, and that’s the whole point of a pair of shoes.

A step-by-step guide to decluttering photos

Ready to declutter the photos in your home? Here are six steps to help you declutter photos without feeling guilty.

1. Have a decluttering goal in mind

Before any decluttering project, it’s important to have a decluttering goal in mind.

What are you trying to achieve by decluttering your photos?

How many photos do you want to keep?

What type of photos will you look at from time to time and feel joy?

Knowing your decluttering goals will help you to determine the outcome of the particular decluttering project. In addition, it will keep you motivated throughout the process.

List your photo decluttering goals on your phone, so you have them on hand at all times. That way you can always refer to them while decluttering.

2. Gather all of your photos together

Now, you’re going to gather all of your photos together. This step may be challenging if your photos are scattered in different areas in the home.

It may take a while to gather them together, but gathering your photos in one spot allows you to see everything you have at a glance.

This makes it easier to sort and declutter photos later, which will help you to save more time in the long run.

3. Sort your photos before you declutter

Next, it’s time to sort your photos before you declutter.

You can sort your photos by:

• Year
• Location
• Occasion

Most people prefer to sort by time, but I suggest doing a combination of all three to speed up the process.

Sometimes you may forget when an event happened, but you may remember details like where the event was held and what the occasion was.

If you can’t remember all of the above, it’s OK. Don’t waste too much time thinking about it. Put them in a miscellaneous pile so you can move along.

However, you should avoid putting too many photos in this pile or you may get overwhelmed trying to organize them later.

Lastly, if you spot any duplicates, put them together within each category. You will deal with them in the next step.

4. Declutter easy photos first

Now, you may have a lot of photos, but there is a trick to decluttering them fast.

How? By decluttering easy photos first.

What’s an easy photo to declutter? Well, these are the photos that are not worth keeping because they are low in quality or have lost their meaning.

Here’s a list of photos you should declutter immediately:

• Duplicate photos
• Photos with similar subjects captured from different angles
• Blurry photos
• Overexposed photos
• Underexposed photos
• Photos that bring back bad memories
• Unflattering photos
• Poorly composed photos (e.g. if the subject is too far away, subjects’ heads are cut off, etc)
• Meaningless photos of places, people, and objects
• Photos of people you no longer talk to (e.g. ex-partners, ex-colleagues, etc)
• Photos of people you don’t know

5. Ask yourself these questions when decluttering photos

Do you still have a lot of photos after decluttering everything above?

If you do, use the list of questions below to guide you to make a decision.

• Did you look at this photo recently?
• Will you miss this photo if it’s no longer around?
• Is this photo something you will view repeatedly in the future?
• How do you feel when viewing this photo?
• Is it possible to digitize this photo?

If you answered no to the first three questions, it’s time to declutter the photo in question. You don’t have to think twice!

However, if you answered yes and viewing the photo makes you happy, consider digitizing it and tossing the printed version.

That way, you don’t have to worry about losing or ruining the photo. Not only will you save physical storage space, but you can access the photo easily on your devices. Plus, you can always print it again if you need to!

Besides print photos, don’t forget to declutter the negatives. If you haven’t actively searched for them, you probably won’t need them anymore.

Finally, give yourself sufficient time to declutter your photos.

You may find that you need more time to go through each photo to decide if you should keep or toss them, and that’s perfectly fine!

What to do with photos you don’t want anymore

Unfortunately, a lot of old photos cannot be recycled because they contain certain materials like pastics, metals, and chemicals that make it unsafe for recycling.

You can however send your negatives to GreenDisk for recycling.

Instead of discarding your old photos, invite your family or relatives over and see if they would like to keep any of them.

Alternatively, you can donate them to schools and libraries who may use them for projects or educational purposes.

Besides that, you can also reach out to museums, as some will properly preserve them for future generations. 

Another option is to sell your old photos to thrift stores for cheap. You probably won’t make a lot of money, but you can get rid of your old photos quickly.

How to organize photos

After taking the time to declutter your photos, it’s finally time to organize them.

You can organize them based on how you sorted them: by year/time, location, or occasion.

For print photos you’d like to keep and pass down to family and friends, I recommend organizing your photos in photo albums.

Remember, you don’t have to cram every single photo in an album. The idea here is to create a highlight reel of your favorite moments.

Make sure that the photo album is acid, lignin and PVC free, as these will help to protect your photos over time.

Here are my picks for photo albums:

• 4×6 beige photo album with linen cover – fits 400 photos
• 4×6 green photo album with fabric cover and frame insert – fits 200 photos
• Black photo album with 100 pages for multiple photo sizes (4×6, 5×7, 6×8, 8×10)

For everything else you’ve saved, consider digitizing them and organizing them in a cloud storage.

I’m a big fan of this method because I can sync the photos to my phone, which means I can access them easily at all times.

Scanning your photos and uploading them online can be time-consuming, but I promise it’s worth it!

You can also choose to display them your photos with a digital photo frame. This allows you to view thousands of photos at one time. It saves space and looks great in any home!

If you still prefer something physical, you can get your photos printed in a photo book.

A photo book is similar to a photo album, except you can easily add, edit and rearrange your favorite photos to achieve your own design. It also comes with beautiful cover designs and can totally pass off as coffee table books!
