As I grow older, I’ve been more intentional with my home decor choices, and that usually means I take my time to make decisions. So, trust me, this makeover definitely did not happen overnight.

The dining room makeover has been a long time in the making, but I’m so pleased with how everything turned out.

The dining room is hands-down my favourite space in our home now.

Before Dining Room Makeover

Six years ago, my interior style was more bohemian, so I wanted my dining room to have a vibrant, tropical vibe.

I loved using plants as decor, bringing in natural elements that added to the room’s airy feel.

To complement the bright and airy vibe I loved so much, I opted for a glass dining table and clear acrylic chairs, keeping the space light and uncluttered.

However, over time, I noticed that the elements started blending together, lacking the visual contrast I had hoped for.

A few years ago, I hung a tree-print artwork on the wall.

I thought it would add more character to the dining room, but the piece didn’t quite fit the tropical-bohemian vibe.

Not to mention, its size was too small for the wall, making it feel out of place.

Although the dining room didn’t look terrible, it never truly felt like me.

The space lacked a clear identity and felt disjointed.

It just didn’t align with the vision I had in mind, and despite the effort I put into decorating, it never clicked the way I wanted it to.

The room wasn’t cohesive or personal – it felt more like a collection of ideas rather than an intentional reflection of my style.

In the end, I just didn’t feel connected to the space, which made it hard to fully enjoy.

After Dining Room Makeover

After making a few thoughtful adjustments, the dining room finally feels like the space I had envisioned all along.

It now feels warm, cozy, and inviting, all of which perfectly aligns with my personal style at this stage of my life.

The room no longer feels forced; instead, it reflects a cohesive, intentional design that feels like me.

The transformation lies in the small but impactful details, which made all the difference.

Dining Room Decor Details

A Fresh Coat Of Paint

In 2022, I collaborated with Vasari to repaint the apartment using their limewash paint. We used Vasari’s Linen White for the dining room wall.

The moment I saw the new wall colour, it gave me the creative spark I needed to dive into a full dining room makeover.

I immediately thought the soft, textured finish of the limewash added so much depth to the space, making the room feel both moody and inviting at the same time.

The subtle warmth of Vasari’s Linen White created the perfect backdrop and set the tone for the entire dining room makeover.

Swap Out The Furniture

The next step in the makeover was swapping out the furniture.

I had been meaning to replace the acrylic chairs for a while — one had broke, and more importantly, they weren’t comfortable enough for long meals.

I know, I know, what was I thinking in the first place?!

Anyway, when I came across this set of white boucle chairs, I instantly fell in love.

Their soft, curved shape felt like the perfect contrast to the hard edges of my dining table, adding balance and visual interest to the space.

What also drew me to the chairs was their sleek and sophisticated black legs.

Since black naturally draws attention and gives the space a sense of focus, I’ve been wanting to introduce touches of black to the dining room.

These new chairs not only made the dining area more comfortable but also brought in the right mix of softness and structure.

That’s not all! Since I’ve always loved the charm of mismatched dining chairs, I wanted to carry that concept into the dining room makeover.

This time, I decided to pair the boucle chairs with natural rattan and wood armchairs.

The wood armchairs are my husband’s favourite. They’re made from real wood, so the beautiful natural grain stands out.

I love how these two chair styles complement each other: the softness of the boucle contrasts well with the rattan and wood textures.

Plus, both chairs are SO comfortable.

One thing’s for sure – I learned my lesson the hard way. So, it was very important to me that the dining area is as practical as it is stylish!

Choose The Right Artwork

The hardest part of the dining room makeover was choosing the right artwork.

This time, I wanted something personal that truly resonated with me. Nothing generic or mass-produced!

Fortunately, I connected with a local artist, Carissa from Wildflower Culture, who offered to create a custom piece based on a story I wanted to express.

I immediately jumped on board. I’d be crazy to turn down a unique and meaningful piece of art!

I shared with her how I’ve been navigating grief over the past few years and how my love for the beach has been a source of comfort during that time.

She understood my vision perfectly and designed a piece called Beach Mornings to reflect those emotions.

This time, I also made sure the artwork was the right size and scale for the wall.

When the artwork arrived, it fit seamlessly into the room’s design.

Be Intentional With Decor

Sadly, all of my plants have died, but I still wanted a green element to bring life to the space.

I decided to invest in my first large faux plant, which fits perfectly in the corner of the dining room.

If you’re buying a faux plant, it’s essential to repot it.

Faux plants often come in small plastic containers that immediately give away their artificial nature.

I chose a larger decorative pot and filled the top with moss to create a more natural, realistic look.

You should also look out for the colour of the leaves and the texture of the branches. Avoid leaves that are bright green and branches that are too smooth.

When shopping for faux plants, I like to go for ones with small imperfections because they mimic the natural flaws of real plants, making them appear more lifelike.

What it is: According to Geology.com, quartzite is a metamorphic rock made almost entirely out of quartz.

How it’s made: Quartzite is formed when sandstone is altered by Earth’s heat and pressure in addition to the chemical activity of metamorphism.

Texture and finish: Slightly coarser feel, but can come in different finishes like polished, honed, and leathered

Color: Primarily whites and greys

Pattern: Similar to marble as both stones have feathered strokes or swirling veins across the surface

Uses: Kitchen countertops, decorative walls, roofing tiles, stairs, and flooring

Cleaning Instructions: Clean daily with a soft sponge or cloth, gentle soap, and water. Use a non-abrasive stone cleaner designed specifically for natural stones for intensive cleaning.

Maintenance: As with all natural stones, quartzite requires regular sealing to maintain its quality. Always use coasters, trivets, and cutting boards to prevent stains and scratches. Wipe all spills immediately with a soft cloth.

Pros of quartzite

Looks like marble

Quartzite has a similar appearance to marble. Both have free-flowing veins across the surface, which makes both stones look beautiful, unique, and luxurious. In addition, both stones’ colors and textures look alike.

More durable than marble

In terms of hardness, quartzite is a 7 on the Mohs Hardness Scale whereas marble is a 3 on the same scale. As a result, quartzite is much more durable than marble, making it less susceptible to scratches, chips, and cracks.

Doesn’t etch

Etching is a chemical process that occurs when acidic elements come into contact with the stone—for instance, lemon, salad dressing, wine, ketchup, etc. Etching essentially removes a stone’s shine and forms a dull rough spot on the surface.

One of the main differences between quartzite vs marble is that quartzite doesn’t etch. Quartzite’s main composition is quartz, which does not react to acid. On the other hand, marble consists primarily of calcite which reacts to acid. Hence, it is prone to etching when exposed to acidic ingredients or materials.

Heat-resistant

Since quartzite is formed under high heat and pressure, it can withstand high temperatures. This means it will not burn if you place a hot pan or pot directly on the surface.

Increases house resale value

As with all natural stones, having quartzite in your home increases its resale value. Not only does quartzite look beautiful, but its durability makes it a fantastic choice for high-traffic areas like the kitchen. Its longevity and quality make quartzite a highly-sought after stone.

Cons of quartzite

Requires regular maintenance

Not all quartzite is the same, as some are more porous than others. While quartzite is generally more durable than marble, it still requires regular maintenance. Therefore, it is advisable to seal your quartzite once every few years to prevent stains.

Can be more expensive than marble

The price of quartzite ranges from $60 – $100 per square foot and it depends on several factors such as location and design. However, quartzite can cost more than marble, if you include the cost of installation. Quartzite is harder, which makes it more difficult and expensive to install.

What is marble?

What it is: Marble is a metamorphic rock composed primarily of calcite and other minerals like clay minerals, micas, quartz, pyrite, and more.

How it’s made: First, limestone is subjected to the heat and pressure of metamorphism. Then, the calcite in the limestone enters a recrystallization process forming marble.

Texture and finish: Smooth with three common types of finishes – honed, leathered, and polished.

Color: There are many different colors including white, black, green, red/orange, yellow/gold, and brown.

Pattern: Streaks of free-flowing veins running across its surface

Uses: Kitchen countertops, islands, and backsplashes, bathroom countertops, walls, flooring, furniture, and decorative items

Cleaning instructions: Clean daily with a soft cloth, water, and mild water. Remember to wipe dry immediately. Do not use harsh, abrasive, or acidic cleaners, which include lemon juice or vinegar.

Maintenance: As with all natural stones, marble requires regular sealing to maintain its quality. Always use coasters, trivets, and cutting boards to prevent stains, etch marks, and scratches. Wipe all spills immediately with a soft cloth.

Pros of Marble

Beautiful, luxurious, and unique

Ask anyone what the most beautiful natural stone is, and I’m sure they will say it’s marble! Marble can blend in with a lot of interior styles, making it a popular choice for homeowners. Marble is also available in many colors, patterns, and finishes – no one slab is alike!

Easy to install

Being a softer stone, marble is easier to install than quartzite. As quartzite is a much harder stone than marble, installation may require specialized tools which may cause the process to be more tedious.

High resale value

Like quartzite, having marble in your home will increase its resale value. Due to its long history, beauty, and durability, marble remains one of the most popular natural stones to date. Installing marble for your flooring, kitchen countertops, bathrooms, and centerpieces can increase your property’s value.

Cons of Marble

Porous

Marble is porous, so it has tiny holes or pores on its surface. When a surface is porous, it is extremely hard to clean any liquid passing through the surface. That’s why stains occur when liquids are left lying on a marble surface for a long time.

Not as durable

Marble is one of the softer natural stones, which makes it more fragile compared to quartzite. Despite being heat-resistant, it is susceptible to scratches, etch marks, and, stains.

Requires regular maintenance

Since marble is less durable and more porous than quartzite, regular maintenance is a must. In fact, marble may even require more frequent sealing than quartzite does. Plus, you’re likely to spend more time cleaning a marble countertop over a quartzite one!

Can be expensive

Marble comes in a wide array of colors, patterns, and textures. If you like a bold and dramatic stone, Calacatta marble is your best bet. However, it is the most expensive marble in the world because it is only available from one quarry in the world. For that reason, production is extremely limited.

Quartzite vs Marble – which is the superior natural stone?

However, if I had to pick one for my home, I’ll probably go for quartzite. It’s the durability for me. I don’t have to worry about etching or staining the stone!

I know the imperfections add to a stone’s uniqueness, but I can’t bear to see the flaws, especially if the stone is expensive.

Ultimately, you’ll never go wrong with either quartzite or marble. Think about how you’ll be using the stone and how each con affects you.

One of the quartzite’s advantages is its heat resistance. Quartzite can withstand hot materials on its surface, making it perfect for kitchen countertops. However, using trivets or hot pads whenever you can is advisable.

Like all natural stones, quartzite requires regular maintenance like annual sealing. Besides that, it is essential to take precautionary measures such as wiping spills immediately to maintain the stone’s quality.

More expensive than granite

Quartzite is rarer than granite, therefore the former is more expensive than the latter. Quartzite starts from $60 per square foot whereas granite starts from $40 per square foot. However, prices for both stones vary depending on other factors like location, slab thickness, color, etc.

What is granite?

What it is: Accordingly to Geology.com, granite is an igneous rock that contains quartz, feldspar, and other minerals.

How it’s made: As an igneous rock, granite is formed from the solidification of molten rock material. In other words, granite is formed from the crystallization of magma below the Earth’s surface.

Finish: Granite comes in three finishes namely honed, polished, and leathered.

Color: Granite comes in a wide range of colors. Popular colors include white, beige, brown, and black.

Pattern: Granite has 3 primary patterns – speckled, solid, or marble. You can spot a speckled granite instantly because of the metallic-hued flecks or spots in the pattern. Solid, as its name applies, refers to granite that comes in one single hue with a little pattern on it. Lastly, marbled granite looks similar to marble as it has organic and unique veining across the stone.

What is dolomite?

What it is: Dolomite, a sedimentary rock, is formed on the surface of the earth. It is a common stone that can be found in many locations worldwide, especially in the Italian Dolomite Alps. 

How it’s made: According to Geology.com, dolomite is formed when the calcite in limestone is modified by the magnesium found in groundwater.

Texture and finish: Smooth to the touch with a high-polished finish

Color: The most common colors are white and grey whereas rare colors include brown, pink, black, and green.

Pattern: Like marble, dolomite has streaks of varied colors or veins running across its surface.

Uses: Kitchen countertops and backsplashes, bathroom countertops, and feature walls

Cleaning instructions: Clean your dolomite countertops daily with a soft cloth, water, and mild water. Wipe dry immediately. Do not use harsh, abrasive, or acidic cleaners, which include lemon juice or vinegar.

Maintenance: As with all natural stones, dolomite requires annual sealing to maintain its quality. Use coasters, trivets, and cutting boards to prevent stains, etch marks, and scratches. Wipe all spills immediately with a soft cloth.

Pros of dolomite

More durable than marble

Both marble and dolomite are porous, which means they’re susceptible to etches, stains, scratches, chips, and cracks. However, dolomite has a Mohs hardness grade of 3.5–4, making it a harder stone than marble. Therefore, it is more durable and will suffer fewer wear and tear marks over the years.

Heat resistant

One of the best things about dolomite is its heat resistance. It retains heat better than many other materials like quartz. While it’s not advisable to place a hot pan directly on any surface, you could probably get away with no burn marks on a dolomite countertop.

Affordable

While there may not be a significant price difference between dolomite and marble, the former is more affordable than the latter. The average price of dolomite is around $55-$75 per square foot, which makes it more affordable than granite, quartz, and quartzite. Prices vary depending on the type of dolomite (e.g. thickness and color) and the location.

Looks beautiful

It’s difficult to tell dolomite and marble apart because they look so similar! Like marble, dolomite has streaks of varied colors or veins across its surface. Its unique pattern and pearly shine make dolomite beautiful and luxurious.

Cons of dolomite

Limited colors available

Most dolomite slabs come in signature grey and white. If you’re looking for a warmer stone, dolomite is probably not for you.

Vulnerable to stains, etches, and scratches

As with most natural stones, dolomite is porous and is still vulnerable to stains, etches, and scratches. Despite being more durable than marble, extra care is recommended to maintain its quality and longevity.

Requires more maintenance

Unlike engineered stones, dolomite needs extra care and maintenance. For instance, dolomite needs to be sealed at least once a year. It is recommended to clean dolomite countertops once a day with a gentle soap as acidic and chemical cleaners may etch or stain the stone. Furthermore, all spills need to be wiped immediately because certain substances like oil, wine, and fruit juices may discolor unsealed dolomite.

What is marble?

What it is: Marble is a metamorphic rock composed primarily of calcite and other minerals like clay minerals, micas, quartz, pyrite, and more.

How it’s made: First, limestone is subjected to the heat and pressure of metamorphism. The calcite in the limestone then goes through a recrystallization process forming marble.

Texture and finish: Smooth to the touch with three common types of finishes – honed, leathered, and polished.

Color: There are many different colors including white, black, green, red/orange, yellow/gold, and brown.

Pattern: Streaks of varied colors or veins running across its surface

Uses: Kitchen countertops, islands, and backsplashes, bathroom countertops, walls, flooring, furniture, and decorative items

Cleaning instructions: Clean your marble countertops daily with a soft cloth, water, and mild water. Wipe dry immediately. Do not use harsh, abrasive, or acidic cleaners, which include lemon juice or vinegar.

Maintenance: As with all natural stones, marble requires regular sealing to maintain its quality. Use coasters, trivets, and cutting boards to prevent stains, etch marks, and scratches. Wipe all spills immediately with a soft cloth.

Pros of Marble

Beautiful, luxurious, and unique

Marble may be high maintenance but many people still love this natural stone because no two slabs are alike. Each piece lends a distinct character to a home with its unique beauty and luxury.

High resale value

Marble typically has a higher resale value compared to dolomite. However, it is important to note that a home’s resale value doesn’t depend entirely on the type of stone used in a home.

Cons of Marble

Vulnerable to stains, etches, and scratches

Marble is extremely porous, making it very vulnerable to stains, etches, and scratches. Extra care is recommended to maintain its quality and longevity.

Expensive

The price of marble varies due to the type of marble (e.g. thickness, grade, color, etc) and location. Generally, marble is more expensive than dolomite, especially rarer marble like Calacatta marble, which can go for $110-$250 per square foot. However, there are more affordable options like Carrara marble, which can go for $40-$100 per square foot.

Requires more maintenance

Just like dolomite, marble needs extra care and maintenance. Marble needs to be sealed regularly to avoid stains and etch marks. Daily cleaning using a gentle soap is recommended as acidic and chemical cleaners may etch or stain the stone. Furthermore, all spills need to be wiped immediately because certain substances like oil, wine, and fruit juices may discolor unsealed marble.

Despite their similarities, there is one stone that’s slightly superior to the other.

What is sintered stone?

What it is: An engineered stone made completely from natural minerals

How it’s made: First, natural minerals are carefully selected for quality, colour, and texture before being heated under extreme heat and pressure to form a solid mass that is extremely durable. This process is known as sintering. After the mass is formed, patterns or veins are printed on the slab.

Texture and finish: Sintered stone comes in two types of finishes (high gloss and smooth matte. Both are smooth to the touch.

Colour: A wide variety of colours are available

Pattern: A wide variety of patterns are available. Sintered stone slabs can mimic marble, terrazzo, granite, and more.

Uses: Kitchen countertops, worktops, furniture, flooring, shelves, wall cladding

Cleaning instructions: All you need is warm water and mild soap for day-to-day cleaning. A nonabrasive cleaner works for some stubborn spills.

Maintenance: Day-to-day cleaning is sufficient. No sealing is required.

Pros of sintered stone

Extremely durable

Since sintered stone is an engineered stone, it is extremely durable and nonporous. Like quartz, it is resistant to water, stains, scratches, cracks, and chips. Sintered stone also doesn’t react with chemicals. It scores a 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, which makes it a harder stone than quartz.

Heat-resistant

Since sintered stone doesn’t contain any resin in it, it is heat-resistant. Setting a hot pan or pot on a sintered stone will not cause any damage to the slab.

UV-resistant

Sintered stone is also UV-resistant and its colour will not fade or discolour even when exposed to sunlight over time. This makes it an excellent option for outdoor use.

Looks natural and organic

Sintered stone uses digital imaging technology to print a pattern on its surface. Popular sintered stone patterns mimic the appearance of natural stone surfaces such as marble. The technology used helps to make the stone patterns or veins look realistic, natural, and organic.

Easy to clean and maintain

Similar to quartz, sintered stone is very easy to clean and maintain. They do not require any sealing or waxing and can be easily cleaned with water, mild soap, and a sponge.

100% Natural

Sintered stone is made out of 100% natural materials. It does not contain any resin, unlike quartz.

Cons of sintered stone

Expensive

The cost of sintered stone runs from $60-$100 per square foot. Prices vary depending on the stone’s quality, design, brand, location, and installation difficulty. Overall, the cost of sintered stone is higher than quartz.

Patterns are printed on the top surface only

The pattern on the sintered surface is only visible on the top surface. This is different from quartz, where you’ll be able to see the pattern running through the sides as well.

What is quartz?

What it is: Quartz refers to a mineral of many varieties that consists primarily of silica, or silicon dioxide. However, engineered quartz is made from roughly 90% natural quartz and 10% poly resin. 

How it’s made: Engineered quartz is manufactured by grinding natural quartz and other natural stone or recycled industrial wastes like ceramic and glass and binding them together with resin.

Texture: Wide variety of textures from polished to honed

Pattern: Wide variety of patterns from flecked, smooth, veins to mimic natural stone

Colour: Wide variety of colours. Natural shades especially bright whites are very popular.

Uses: Kitchen countertops and backsplashes, bathroom countertops, indoor floors

Cleaning instructions:  All you need is warm water and mild soap for day-to-day cleaning. A nonabrasive cleaner works for some stubborn spills.

Maintenance: Day-to-day cleaning is sufficient. No sealing is required.

Pros of quartz

Durable and nonporous

Since quartz is an engineered stone, it is nonporous. This means it is resistant to stains, scratches, and acid abrasion. It also will not chip or crack. Thanks to its hardiness, quartz doesn’t suffer from obvious tear and wear marks over the years.

Wide variety to choose from

Engineered quartz comes in a wide variety of colours, textures, and patterns. Plus, with so many brands available in the market, it is easy to source and purchase different types of engineered quartz.

Consistent in colour and pattern

Since engineered quartz is manmade, they are usually consistent in colour and pattern. The pattern also travels through the slab, which means you can see the design running through the side of the countertop. This trait is perfect for people who love cohesion and uniformity.

Easy to clean and maintain

Engineered quartz is well-loved because they are so easy to clean and maintain! They do not require any sealing or waxing and can be easily cleaned with water, mild soap, and a sponge.

Affordable

Engineered quartz run between $55 to $75 per square foot installed. Prices vary based on colour choices, type of brand, sizes, configurations, and location. If you only need a small piece of quartz, consider going to the scrapyard as you may be able to score half-priced leftover pieces from someone else’s project!

Cons of quartz

Not heat-resistant

Engineered quartz is not heat-resistant because it contains resin, which can only withstand approximately 150 degrees. Placing very hot materials on a quartz countertop without a trivet will damage the surface.

Not UV-resistant

Additionally, engineered quartz is not UV-resistant because the resin is vulnerable to sunlight. As a result, quartz is not suitable for outdoor use as the colour may fade or discolour if exposed to sunlight over time.

Not as unique as natural stone

Compared to natural stone, engineered quartz lacks variations in patterning and veining. Therefore, the pattern or veins may look more generic and less realistic.

Sintered stone or quartz – which is better for your home?

After researching both engineered stones, I’m on Team Sintered Stone!

If you have the budget, I highly recommend selecting sintered stone over quartz. Despite their similarities, it’s obvious that sintered stone is the superior sister.

Sintered stone is a lot more durable, looks beautiful and natural, and can be used indoors and outdoors.

The best thing about dolomite is that it looks and feels like marble but costs a fraction of the price!

Less durable than granite

Although dolomite is harder than marble, it is still less durable than granite. That means you can still scratch or chip it, especially when working with glass and metal without any safety measures in place.

Porous

Dolomite is also porous, which makes it susceptible to stains and etch marks.

Requires regular sealing

The best way to maintain a dolomite countertop is to seal it once a year. When unsealed, dolomite can be stained by liquids like oil, wine, and juices. However, these liquids are less likely to penetrate the stone if it is sealed consistently.

Less affordable than granite

Dolomite is usually more expensive than granite. The fabrication cost adds up because it takes more time to cut this natural stone.

What is granite?

What it is: Granite is a coarse igneous rock that is rich in quartz and feldspar. Just like dolomite, it’s also a natural stone.

How it’s made: Granite is formed beneath the earth’s surface through the cooling and solidifying of magma.

Texture: Although they are naturally coarse, they can be polished to create a glassy and smooth surface.

Color: Comes in a wide variety of speckled colors like white, black, blue, pink, and brown.

Cleaning instructions: Clean once a day using a soft cloth to dust the surface. Wipe it down with plain water or a mild soap. Avoid using harsh and abrasive cleaners containing acidic elements like lemon juice or vinegar.

Maintenance: Granite needs to be re-sealed annually to maintain a nonporous surface. White granite countertops usually need frequent resealing compared to dark countertops, as they are more likely to show stains. Always use coasters, trivets, and cutting boards to prevent scratches and other damages.

Pros of granite

Durable

Granite is far more durable than marble and dolomite. It is tough to chip or crack a granite countertop.

Affordable

Granite is widely available and used in many kitchens. It’s also easier to cut and work with, which makes it more affordable than dolomite and marble.

It comes in unique colors

Granite comes in a wide variety of unique colors, so it’s easy to find a color to match your interior style.

It doesn’t drop in value

Most importantly, granite kitchen countertops do not drop in value. If taken care of, granite can last a very long time. They are also considered a premium material, and can even increase your home value up to 25%.

Cons of Granite

Porous

Like all natural stones, granite is porous. This means liquids can penetrate its surface causing stains or etch marks.

Requires regular sealing

As a result, granite requires sealing at least once a year. This helps to protect the surface from absorbing any liquids and leaving stains or etch marks.

Difficult to repair

Unfortunately, granite countertops are difficult to repair. A professional can help with repairs, but it is unlikely they can get your granite countertop to look the way it did before.

So, should you choose dolomite or granite for your kitchen countertop?

Both are beautiful natural stones and share similar pros and cons.

To choose the best material for you and your family, you must first consider how you will use it and which stone will visually match your overall kitchen design.

If you like the look of marble and want a grey and white countertop, dolomite is an amazing alternative to marble.

However, you may want to consider granite if your kitchen has heavy traffic and you are not fussed about the color of your kitchen countertops.

Think white, off-white, cream, and taupe. Additional shades include blues, soft grays, and sage green.

Materials

Wood is the primary material used in both styles.

However, a modern farmhouse will also use other materials like stainless steel and polished stone.

Another feature that sets both styles apart is that the modern farmhouse keeps things visually interesting by adding different textures.

This helps to bring out the details in a neutral space.

You can find textures like rattan, cotton, wicker, and linens in a modern farmhouse.

Although they look modern, these natural textures still go with the overall farmhouse look.

Besides that, lighting also plays an important role in a modern farmhouse.

Black lantern pendant lighting is a staple in a modern farmhouse.

Fatin, a mother-of-two, understands this concept and has nailed the modern-day minimalist theme for her home.

Just take one look at her condo and you’ll instantly feel calm and relaxed. It is reminiscent of an upscale hotel room – elegant, understated, and clutter-free.

Despite the overall minimalist vibe in her abode, there is one room that is the complete opposite – her kids’ room.

From a sage green accent wall to a mauve canopy, Fatin’s kids’ room is the only one with a splash of color.

Although the room is adorned with colorful toys, books, and wall art, there are traces of Fatin’s minimalism peeking through.

The reupholstered cream bedframe is a classic that will see her children through the years. Plus, the rattan furniture can eventually be passed down as heirloom pieces.

Although minimalism is the core theme in Fatin’s house, her home is anything but dull.

How would you describe your home style?  

Our home is mostly minimalist with a hint of Japandi, plus a little bit of (almost) maximalism in the kids’ room.

While the rest of the house maintains a neutral color palette like beige, grey, and black, our kids’ room has both neutral and colorful tones! It is like entering another world in their room.

What inspired your home decor?     

We love traveling and staying in different hotels. However, we have traveled less since the pandemic.

So, we incorporated the idea of coziness, cleanliness, and relaxation like we used to experience during our staycations in our own home. Imagine waking up every day in a hotel room. Don’t you like that feeling too?

But, things are different for the kids’ room. It is a mix between @kidofthevillage and @deugniet_en_co because I just couldn’t choose between one!

I tried to buy only neutral-colored toys and kids’ room decor, but children will always be children. They love colors while I love neutrals!

The best solution is to mix both themes by creating a neutral sleeping space and a colorful playing space. My daughter and I think that it is a win-win situation. We love the outcome.

Did you renovate your home?   

We did basic things to this home because we are most probably going to make it an investment property in a few years.

6 things we did to this home are vinyl flooring, invisible balcony grille, kitchen cabinets, minimalist wall paneling at our dining area, master bathroom sink counter, master bedroom sliding door, and built-in master bedroom wardrobe. Pretty straightforward, right? 

We did most of our home renovation with local contractors. They don’t have any website or social media platforms.

However, our vinyl flooring is by @alaqsacarpets and the invisible grille is by klsgrille.com.my.

We limited all these renovations within 2 months after we received the house keys.

What is your favourite element in your home?

I guess one thing that differentiates our home from others would be our minimalist wall paneling. I appreciate how random yet elegant it looks, and the way it gives our dining area a different texture. 

What is the best investment you made for your home?

The best investment would be the vinyl flooring. It instantly gives our home another look that doesn’t require us to do much with the furniture or wall paint color to make our home look cozy.

We also don’t need to have a carpet for our home because the flooring itself provides our feet with decent warmth. Plus, the floor is so much easier to clean! It is like killing two birds with one stone.

I still remember how we used to be bothered about footprints on our rental house tiles. We had to constantly wipe and mop the floor. The job doubles and triples when you have a child (or more). I can say that this type of flooring saves our sanity.

Name one regret you have about your home.

The one thing we should’ve done to our house is to install extra air conditioners in the kids’ room and the utility room. Since our house is facing west, we are blessed with a beautiful sunset, but also the scorching heat of the evening sun.

Where do you shop for furniture and home decor?      

We shopped just about anywhere for larger furniture that didn’t require us to break the bank but still offered the desired quality and design. Whereas for home decor, I personally love H&M Home, IKEA, and Shopee!

What will be your next home project?

There is one project that I haven’t shown on my page which is our laundry/pantry/mini garage area. All 3-1 in a 7×5 ft room. Does it sound exciting to you? 

Any advice you would like to share with others?     

Home takes time and that’s okay. There is no fun in going into a house that has it all.

Besides providing the necessary drawings and 3D renderings, interior designers are usually involved in the renovation process. They often work alongside contractors and suppliers on both residential and commercial projects.

Unlike an interior stylist, an interior designer must have a formal degree and training. Depending on the location, they may also need to have a registered license.

An interior designer’s role includes:

• Interpreting the client’s brief into a design that meets the client’s budget
• Negotiating project fees and working to budgets
• Presenting mood, material and sample boards
• Space planning and designing the layout
• Designing custom furniture, finishes, and upholstery items
• Sourcing and supplying furniture, fittings, finishes, etc.
• Creating and advising on lighting and electrical plans
• Managing the entire project from start to finish
• Decorating the space according to the client’s vision (yes, they can decorate too!)

Full-service interior designer

Traditionally, interior designers used to only offer full-service design.

This means that they manage the renovation project from start to finish. They handle everything from the initial design, to project management, and decorating the final space. They also oversee the timeline and budget.

In short, the renovation process is taken off the homeowners’ hands.

Interior designers sometimes refer to this process as a turn-key interior design. Why? Because all the homeowner has to do after renovation is to turn the key and walk into their dream space!

E-design interior designer

These days, more interior designers are offering online interior design services. This is a great alternative for people with smaller budgets who want to have complete control over their renovation timeline.

An interior designer who offers this service will still provide the same design drawings as a full-service interior designer. But, they will not manage any execution – the client is fully responsible for overseeing installation.

What is an interior decorator?

An interior decorator is very similar to an interior stylist. Both roles do not require formal education, training, or a registered license. This is because both roles do not advise on structural changes in a building.

Similar to an interior stylist, an interior decorator’s job is to make a space look beautiful.

An interior decorator’s role includes:

• Interpreting a client’s brief into a vision/design for them
• Creating mood, materials and/or samples boards
• Designing the overall look and feel of rooms with furniture and decorative items
• Advising on different interior styles while helping the client to define their personal interior style
• Sourcing and supplying furniture, soft furnishings, decorative items, and small accessories

An interior stylist may move some things around for the sake of photos. But, an interior decorator will not. He or she is someone who can achieve the desired look for your home without compromising function or lifestyle.

Research is key! Social media platforms like Instagram and Pinterest are great for inspiration. Save the photos of spaces you like so you can check if the person/firm you’re considering has a similar portfolio.

Consider browsing magazines and online sites too for more resources. If you see showhouses that you like in your local area, you can also reach out to the realtor for their interior design contacts.

Don’t forget to check in with family and friends for recommendations too! A referral is a great way to find reliable and trustworthy services.

3. Talk to a few options

Once you’ve selected your favorites, it’s important to schedule physical or virtual meetings to talk to them.

You’ll need to see if this person understands your style and what you want. Find out more by asking them the right questions.

Besides that, you should be upfront about the budget to avoid wasting time. Some designers may not take on smaller projects/budgets. Some may work with a smaller budget, but they may have certain limitations.
