If I’m being completely honest, I never used to make my bed every morning until I met my husband (then boyfriend!)

He told me that making the bed every morning can make a big difference in how a home feels.

And you know what? He’s absolutely right!

When the bed is made, the whole room instantly looks tidier.

It also feels like a small win first thing in the morning, which for some reason, makes me feel like I’m going to be just as productive for the rest of the day.

And at the end of a long day, I can honestly say nothing feels more relaxing than climbing into a neatly made bed.

You might not even notice it at first, but a smooth, tidy bed reduces visual clutter.

Keep the living room tidy every night before bed

Now, I know it’s not always realistic to deep clean the entire apartment or house every day, especially if you have kids or pets running around.

But one habit that’s truly changed things for me is resetting the living room every night before bed.

Why? Well, simply because the living room is the FIRST thing I see when I step out of my bedroom in the morning. And, starting my day with a tidy, clean view instantly puts me in a better headspace.

Waking up to a clean living room makes me feel like I’m starting fresh – no matter how bad the day before was.

It’s my way of making sure the living room reflects my state of mind every morning – fresh, calm, and peaceful!

Since it’s just my husband and me in our apartment (for now…), keeping the living room tidy doesn’t take much time at all.

Every night, I…

• Fold the throw blanket and fluff the throw pillows
• Clear and wipe down the coffee table
• Toss any trash
• Switch off all of the electronics

That’s it – just a quick reset that makes the space feel calm again!

I’m sure this routine will change once we have kids, so I’ll be sure to update these steps when that happens!

Get a robot vacuum for daily cleaning + hire a housekeeper once a month to deep clean

I think many of you will relate to this – I love a clean home, but I don’t actually love cleaning.

But, over time, my husband and I have created a simple home cleaning routine that keeps our place looking tidy without constant cleaning.

Instead of doing everything ourselves, we focus on systems that work in the background and habits that make daily upkeep easier.

One of the biggest game-changers for us was investing in a robot vacuum that vacuums and mops.

We run it daily on a timer while we’re at work, so when we come home at the end of the day, the floors are already taken care of.

If there’s one thing I’d genuinely recommend splurging on for your home, it’s a robot vacuum.

The second decision we made was to hire a housekeeper once a month for a deep clean.

I know this is a privilege, and it’s something we had to budget intentionally for.

We spend less in other areas so we can protect our time and energy here. Instead of spending entire weekends cleaning bathrooms and scrubbing floors, we get to rest and actually enjoy our home.

Our housekeeper follows our full deep-clean checklist, which keeps our home maintenance manageable in between visits.

Knowing a full reset is coming every month makes everyday tidying feel far less overwhelming for me too.

When you clean up immediately, everything rinses off so much faster.

But once food dries onto plates, bowls, and pots, it becomes stubborn, sticky, and frankly…. pretty gross.

If you use a dishwasher, you’ll probably end up scrubbing everything anyway just to get the dried bits off (and that’s double the work you were trying to avoid in the first place!)

Also, let’s be honest: nothing disrupts the feeling of a clean home more than the lingering smell of dirty dishes left in the sink!

Look, I won’t pretend this was easy in the beginning. The last thing I want to do after cooking (especially when I’ve used half the kitchen) is clean up!

But the more I committed to washing things right away, the more it felt like second nature to me.

At the end of the day, I’m all about convenience and not creating extra chores for myself.

A quick rinse now is so much better than a full-on scrubbing session later!

No outside clothes on the bed

Now, this is an Asian household, so you already know one of the home rules to live by is our strict “no outdoor shoes inside” rule.

I know people have mixed opinions about this, but honestly… if your shoes have been everywhere, the last place they should be is inside your home.

Otherwise, you’ll end up cleaning far more often than you need to. Just imagine all the dirt and grime you’re tracking in!

If you’re not used to being barefoot indoors, I highly recommend getting a pair of soft indoor slippers. I have a pair I love – they’re cozy, warm, and snug (better than any outdoor shoes imho!)

Similarly, we also follow a “no outside clothes on the bed” policy.

That means showering and changing into our home clothes (which we only wear at home – think sweats, cute lounge clothes, and pjs) before getting into bed.

For me, our bed is a little sanctuary, and I want to keep it as clean as possible.

You never know what your clothes have brushed up against outdoors (public seating, dusty corners, and crowded spaces!) – so I try not to bring any of that into the one place I want to feel completely clean and calm!

I know it might sound like a lot, and I might sound like a borderline neat freak, but these small habits truly improve my day.

Slipping into a clean bed, wearing fresh clothes, and knowing your space is clean and peaceful actually helps me sleep better!

Make sure everything within our home has a home

When everything in your home has a home, you’ll naturally end up with fewer cluttered surfaces. And, that is amazing because it means you’ll have fewer things to clean up!

In our home, keys always go in the entryway console drawer, linens stay in the linen cupboard, and books live in the bookcase.

If I start struggling to find space for something, that’s usually my cue that I have too much stuff and it’s time for me to declutter.

Creating designated homes for your belongings means once you’re done using something, you can put it right back where it belongs.

No random piles on the floor, no “temporary” spots that become permanent, and no more surfaces disappearing under clutter!

It’s a small mindset shift, but believe me, this will keep your home calm, organized, and easier to maintain.

Have a lot of stuff but only one storage space? No worries! In the photo above, you can see that I organized my hall closet by section, using different containers and baskets to separate items. This way, everything has its own spot, and it’s so much easier to find what I need without creating a mess.

Display things we love

Now, I’ve talked a lot about keeping my home clean and clutter-free, but that doesn’t mean your space should feel cold or sterile.

A home should look lived in and reflect the things that bring you joy.

One of my favourite home rules to live by is this: display what you truly love.

For me, that’s ceramics and pretty tableware, so I style my floating shelves with pieces that make me smile every time I walk past.

I also keep my bag collection in my Ikea Billy case – partly for storage, but mostly because seeing them all lined up beautifully just makes me happy!

The key is to give these special items a designated home.

When they’re displayed with intention (grouped thoughtfully, given breathing room, and arranged neatly), they add personality without creating visual clutter.

But when they’re scattered randomly around the house, even the prettiest things can look messy and chaotic.

So choose a few categories of items you love, decide exactly where they’ll live, and let them shine.

Set the table whenever we host

Similarly, a house truly becomes a home when it’s filled with memories, especially the kind we create with family and friends.

For me, that often happens around the dining table. I genuinely love setting the table whenever we host!

I know it might seem like “extra work,” but the joy on my friends’ faces when they sit down to a beautiful tablescape makes every minute worth it.

Setting the table feels like my small way of showing love and making people feel special.

But here’s the thing: tablescapes don’t need to be fancy, complicated, or expensive.

Most of my everyday tablescapes are incredibly simple.

I reuse pieces I already own, mix and match what I have, and create relaxed setups that are perfect for casual meals where there are zero rules.

Decorate with intention

Another one of my favourite home rules to live by is to decorate with intention.

While I love keeping up with home decor trends, I don’t want my home to feel like a carbon copy of whatever is popular on Instagram that week.

That’s why I try to decorate with pieces that carry meaning or tell a story.

When you choose decor intentionally, your home feels more you.

Take my little gallery wall in my home office.

At first glance, it looks like a collection of simple art pieces, but every single item has a memory attached to it.

Many of them are postcards from friends over the years. I even framed a poem my best friend wrote for me when we were sixteen.

And that star map? It shows the exact constellation on the night and in the place my husband and I first met.

If you’re trying to make your home feel more personal, fill it with things that make you smile every time you walk past them.

Frame a meaningful note, display a souvenir from a trip, or choose decor that reflects your hobbies or history.

Have two kitchen sinks

We have two, and it makes life so much easier, especially when hosting.

One sink can be full of dishes or food prep, while the other is free for guests to use.

Even just for the two of us at home, having two sinks is a huge convenience.

One of us can tackle the dishes while the other washes fruits, vegetables, or even just rinses something by hand.

It keeps the kitchen workflow seamless and prevents cross-contamination when prepping food.

6. Extendable Duster

While microfiber cloths are great for removing dust on surfaces, extendable dusters are essential for cleaning hard-to-reach spots like the tops of cabinets and ceiling fans, door frames, and baseboards.

7. Broom and Dustpan

Even though I have a vacuum cleaner, I still need a broom and dustpan set. I find that they are easier to use in smaller and hard-to-reach areas.

A mop is necessary if you have laminate, hardwood, ceramic, or marble flooring.

Scented candles get their scent from essential oils or artificial scents mixed into the wax. The aroma from the essential oil is diffused when the heat from the flame melts the wax.

These days, you can find a variety of wax types like soy, paraffin, and beeswax. While these candles may share similar scents, each wax type has unique burn properties.

When you’re shopping for scented candles, make sure to purchase high-quality ones that burn slowly and evenly. These candles will usually give off a sweet scent within an hour of lighting.

Although lighting a candle seems easy enough, maintenance is required to ensure your candle lasts longer.

Here are 5 easy tips to care for your candle:

• Always trim the wick and check for debris.

• If it’s your first time burning a candle, it should burn for 1 hour for every 1 inch in diameter of the candle size.

• Don’t burn candles for more than 4 hours (or longer than the manufacturer’s instructions).

• When burning a candle, keep the flame away from fans, air conditioners, and open windows.

• Store candles in a cool, dark, and dry place.

Here are 4 reasons why candles are so well-loved:

Provides an intense scent

A candle provides a steady intense scent when burned for more than 1 hour. Depending on the size of the candle, its scent can fill up an entire room.

Offers a relaxing ambiance when lit

One of the best things about a candle is that it offers a relaxing ambiance when lit. Thanks to its soft flickering light and sweet fragrance, lighting a candle can make an entire area feel cozy instantly.

Doubles up as a beautiful home decor piece

Candles are usually poured into beautiful glass jars, which double up as elegant home decor pieces. This makes candles look great even when they’re not lit.

Cons of candles

While candles are amazing for the reasons above, they are not for everyone. Here’s why:

Potential fire hazards

You have to keep an eye on a candle every time it’s lit. A burning candle must also be placed in safe spots around the room.

Candles are potential fire hazards, so you have to be extra careful especially if you have kids and pets.

Requires maintenance to preserve its quality

Candles require some maintenance to preserve their quality. If they are not maintained, they may display uneven burning, tunneling, and sooting. Candles with poor designs may show these signs as well.

May cause allergies

If you have allergies, strong fragrances may trigger your allergies to flare up. Since candles may emit fine soot into the air, this can also lead to allergies.

Reed diffuser

Like candles, reed diffusers allow aromas to continuously diffuse into the air. They also come in different shapes and sizes.

However, all reed diffusers have 3 main components – fragrance oil/essential oil, reed sticks, and vessel.

First, the fragrance oil is placed inside the vessel, which is usually a glass jar or bottle. This is followed by the reed sticks so that one end is submerged in the fragrance oil and the other is exposed to the air.

The reed sticks will absorb the oil and allow it to travel along its length. Once the oil reaches the top, it evaporates and releases the scent into the air.

Depending on the amount of oil in the vessel, a reed diffuser usually lasts between 1-6 months.

How to use a reed diffuser

Are you new to reed diffusers? This is how you can set up a new reed diffuser:

• Set up the reed diffuser on a flat surface. Avoid delicate areas like wood or marble as the oil may leave stains.

• Pour the fragrance oil into your vessel until half full. You don’t need to do this if the oil is already inside the vessel.

• Stick the reeds into the vessel so that the bottom of the reeds are submerged in the oil. Not sure how many reeds to put in? Start with 6 to 8 reeds for a scent that’s not too light or strong.

• Let your reeds absorb the oil for a few minutes.

• After that, flip the reeds upside down so that the bottom of the reed sticks are now in the air and the dry ends are submerged in the oil.

• Spread your reeds out to let air circulate between them.

• Wait up to 24 hours to let the fragrance fully diffuse.

• If you find that the scent is getting weaker, flip the reeds once a week. Avoid doing this too frequently, otherwise, the oil will run out quickly.

Pros of reed diffusers

Reed diffusers are a popular choice because they are convenient and safe to use daily. Let’s take a look at the benefits of using reed diffusers.

Safe to use all the time

Reed diffusers are flameless, which means they’re safe to use all the time. You can place them anywhere in your home and leave them overnight without any worries.

Offers consistent aroma in small spaces

Reed diffusers provide a consistent aroma in small spaces like bathrooms, hallways, and entryways.

Able to adjust the intensity of the fragrance

You can adjust the intensity of the fragrance by adding or removing the reeds. How? Simply add more reeds if you want a stronger scent or remove some reeds if you want a lighter smell.

Reusable

Once the oil runs out, all you have to do is purchase a new oil refill and pour it into the bottle.

Cons of reed diffusers

No ambiance

Unlike candles, reed diffusers do not provide that soft glow a candle light has. That being said, reed diffusers come in beautiful bottles and jars, which are great home decor pieces.

Limited reach

Reed diffusers have limited reach, therefore they work best in small spaces. You may not notice the fragrance if you place a reed diffuser in a large area.

I’ve always considered myself a writer, but surprisingly have not kept a journal in many years.

I’ve heard many good things about journaling, especially about how it can improve one’s mental health.

However, work and other commitments got in the way every time I wanted to start journaling.

Instead of pushing through and getting into the habit of journaling, I kept all of my thoughts in my head. As a result, I constantly felt overwhelmed and stressed.

Everything changed after my mother passed.

I was dealing with a lot of changes at that time, which caused me a lot of stress and anxiety. I was used to keeping my thoughts to myself but it became too much for me to bear.

I’d finally hit my breaking point after a year of grief.

That was when I decided to start journaling. At first, I documented everything that triggered me to feel sad or angry. I wanted to be able to pinpoint these moments so I could work on a healthier approach to facing these triggers.

When it became slightly too negative for me, I included a gratitude list.

Despite how busy I was, I continued to journal because it has truly transformed my life! I’ve learned how to overcome my anxiety and depression through journaling, and I want to help you to achieve the same results!

Journaling has had such a positive impact on my life. Here are some of the reasons why journaling has made me a better person.

Reduces stress and anxiety

Writing about sadness, anger, and hurt can help to release the intensity of these negative emotions.

I often find that rehashing painful memories via writing helps me to stay calm. That’s because journaling helps to highlight our worries, fears, and insecurities. When you recognize these triggers, you can learn ways to better control them.

Besides that, journaling is similar to venting. Most of us feel better whenever we talk to our friends and family about our problems. Well, guess what? Journaling has the same effect!

Relieves depression

Journaling provides an opportunity for us to process our feelings rather than bottling everything inside.

When we overthink, our minds tend to think of the worst. I’m guilty of this!

Writing our emotions down helps to create self-awareness so that we can identify negative thoughts and behaviors.

Once I realized how negative my mindset was, I started to take control of my life. I put myself first and focused on the things that made me happy.

Journaling not only helped me to overcome my depression, but it also led to healthier habits like exercising and eating well.

Increases optimism and joy

After I discovered some of the triggers that made me sad or angry, I turned things around by including a daily gratitude list.

Doing this made me appreciate the positive things going on in my life. Sure, I have bad days (who doesn’t?), but I’m so thankful for so many things!

Having a daily gratitude list forces you to reflect on the good things every day. Through these reflections, my optimism and joy have increased tremendously.

Journaling tips for beginners

The thing with journaling is that it is very personal. What may work for others may not work for you and vice versa.

I have read and applied different journaling tips I read online but not all of them have worked. That’s because some of these tips are unrealistic and don’t consider our busy schedules!

Today, I’m going to share eight key tips that have helped me to stick to my journaling habit.

Use a journal that works best for you

The first step to being consistent in journaling is to use a journal that works best for you.

Although a lot of people recommend writing on paper, you need to find a journal that’s convenient for you. Otherwise, you won’t keep up with it.

I use the Notes app on my smartphone as a journal. As much as I enjoy writing, typing requires less effort. Plus, I don’t have to worry about my handwriting or deal with hand cramps while writing!

Try out a few methods and observe how it makes you feel. If you don’t want more screen time, use a paper journal. Want to access your journal anytime? Use your phone. Not good with words? Use a sketchbook and doodle away! (Just don’t forget to include some keywords!)

Don’t let the typical journaling method hold you back from doing what’s important – documenting your thoughts!

Write whenever you can

Your journal, your rules. This means you should write whenever you can!

I know some people say journaling in the morning has a ton of benefits. Again, this depends on your schedule. I know a lot of people who are not morning people and they struggle with doing anything remotely productive in the AM.

I journal at night because I like to reflect on my day and see what made me happy and what didn’t. It helps me to unwind at the end of the day and I find it therapeutic. If I’m too tired, I journal the next morning so that I don’t forget what happened the previous day.

Find the best time that works for you so that it will eventually become a habit.

Schedule time to journal

With that being said, you should schedule a time to journal. Or you might never make the time for it.

Journaling only when you’re depressed is going to highlight the worst parts of your life. On the other hand, journaling only when you’re happy is not going to help you through your bad days.

It’s important to be consistent and the only way you can achieve that is if you schedule journaling into your day.

During busy periods, journaling is on my to-do list every Sunday. It makes me feel good before I start a brand new week.

Track your journaling habit

Want to get the most out of journaling? You’re going to have to make it a habit.

Track your journaling habit by including it in your to-do list. Having it on the list pushes you to get it done – even on days when you don’t feel like it.

Eventually, journaling will be a part of your daily routine.

Don’t strive for perfection

Have you ever seen pictures of other people’s beautiful leather-bound notebooks and beautiful cursive handwriting and felt intimidated?

Maybe there’s a small percentage of people who are truly that neat. The rest of us probably have messy journals.

When it comes to journaling, don’t strive for perfection. You’ll only stress yourself out if you do, and you may stop journaling if you can’t stand the way it looks.

It’s OK to have ugly handwriting (as long as you can read it!) and a dog-eared notebook. Remember, it’s the content that matters!

Make journaling pleasurable

One way to practice consistency with journaling is to make it pleasurable.

If it’s part of your morning routine, journal when you’re sipping a cup of freshly brewed coffee in your favorite mug. If you’re like me and it’s part of your night routine, start writing after a nice hot shower and when you’re dressed in your cozy pajamas!

Soon, you’ll look forward to journaling because it has become part of the little things that make your day great.

Write for your eyes only

Whether it’s a physical or digital journal, make sure your journal is private.

You should be able to express yourself honestly in your journal. If there’s a chance that someone may stumble upon it, this may hinder you from telling the complete truth.

Don’t have a place to secure your journal? Use your phone or laptop instead and protect either device with a password!

Experiment until it feels right for you

When you’re starting, I suggest experimenting with different types of journals and different timings to write. You won’t know what feels right until you try.

You’ll know you’ve found the best fit for you once journaling becomes like second nature to you.

Journaling ideas for beginners

So, you’ve picked a journal and you’re ready to start. But, you don’t know what to write about! Believe it or not, this can happen to anyone!

Journaling can feel strange to people who aren’t used to expressing their feelings. If you’re having writer’s block, consider some of these journaling ideas for beginners:

Reflect on your day/week

This has been my go-to prompt since I started.

I use journaling as a way to identify the triggers behind my emotions; so having a daily/weekly reflection is essential. Ask yourself these questions:

• How did you feel today?
• What made you feel (emotion)? (Don’t forget to include your positive feelings too!)
• How did you react to the situation?
• What was your most mindful moment today?
• What were your top goals today? Did you achieve them?
• What did you do this week that moved you closer to reaching your goals?

Gratitude list

The easiest way to start journaling is to create a gratitude list. Think of all the things you are grateful for – big or small – and write them down! Top it off with why you’re grateful for each thing/person.

Manifest your dreams

Manifesting is the practice of thinking aspirational thoughts with the purpose of making them real. What better way to manifest than to write them down? Pen each dream down and the steps you’re going to take to make them happen.

A list of new things you want to try

Think of all the new things you want to try and write them down! It’s going to look like a bucket list, but you can take it one step further and write about how and when you’re going to try them. Or, better yet, WHY you want to try them.

Take a moment to be present

If thinking about the past or future stresses you out, take this time to be present. Engage all five of your senses when you’re journaling. Write down what you see, hear, smell, feel and taste. Start there and see where it takes you.

If you’re still feeling stuck, I recommend setting a timer for 15 minutes and having a go at documenting what’s on your mind. Chances are you’ll probably keep going even after 15 minutes.

You might take one look at my blog and social media platforms and think I was born a super-organized person.

Believe it or not, I grew up the complete opposite. I was a hoarder and the messiest person in my family.

My room used to look like a war zone. Even when I was in college, my best friend (who’s a neat freak) had to organize my wardrobe for me.

At that time, I didn’t understand why organizing was so important to my physical and mental health.

But, things changed after my mother passed away. It was hard enough dealing with the grief, but on top of that, I felt suffocated being surrounded by so much clutter.

I decided to take the first few months to declutter the house. As I started the process, I realized there was so much to do and I needed help to organize my to-do lists.

That’s when I started to plan my weeks.

Before I knew it, I’d stuck to the process for an entire year. Looking back, being organized has helped me to accomplish SO much.

If you are feeling overwhelmed with the chaos in your life, I urge you to take control and start organizing your life. Trust me, you’ll feel physically and mentally better in no time!

Cultivate good habits to keep you organized

Before we get started, it’s important to cultivate good habits to keep you organized. These tips will help you to have the right energy and mindset to tackle your busy days.

• Get a good night’s rest and wake up early every day
• Eat healthy and nutritious meals
• Exercise regularly
• Spend less time watching TV and being on your phone (watch out for these time-sucking activities! You can achieve so much when you’re not constantly on your electronic devices)

A step-by-step guide – How to organize your life in one week

Day 1 – Plan your week

Ever heard of the saying, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail”?

That’s because planning is CRUCIAL for a productive week!

You can do this manually or digitally – whichever works best for you.

There are so many options to choose from – a physical planner, a monthly board, a planning app like Trello, etc.

I like to work with a digital planner (my phone) and a physical planner. I find that this method helps me the best – my physical planner covers my goals, big events, and notes whereas my phone has my to-do lists.

Once you’ve chosen a planner, take half an hour every Sunday to plan your entire week.

Here are five tips to help you plan for an effective week:

1. Start by keying in important events like work events, outings with friends, children’s activites, etc.
2. Think of three goals you want to accomplish each week. Do not overwhelm yourself with too many things or else you’ll set yourself up to fail!
3. Lastly, fill in the planner with every day tasks
4. At the end of each week, look at past week’s events and take note of what you’ve completed and what you haven’t
5. Move pending projects to next week’s schedule

Whenever possible, you should set specific days for certain things e.g. laundry, meal prep, etc so you can build a routine.

Once you’ve established a routine, you won’t have to think about these things as much. Plus, you are less likely to forget them!

Day 2 – Declutter and organize your most used spaces

We work best in clean and conducive environments.

Organizing your to-do lists isn’t enough. It’s equally important to organize your surroundings.

However, decluttering the entire home can be a long and stressful period for some. Instead of trying to do everything in a day, start with the two rooms that you use most.

Chances are, the two rooms will be your bedroom and bathroom.

Let’s begin with the basics.

For the bedroom, make sure to have clean sheets and to make your bed. For the bathroom, make sure the toilet and shower areas are clean.

Next, go through every item on each surface like the floor, nightstands, and tables.

If it’s something that you still use or need, find a home for them. Keeping things in concealed storage like drawers and cabinets is ideal to avoid visual clutter.

But, if that’s not possible, corral similar items together and place them neatly on a surface (anywhere but the floor!)

On the other hand, discard or donate things you don’t need or use anymore.

Day 3 – Organize your kitchen

Having an organized kitchen is essential, especially if you want to take care of yourself by consuming healthy and delicious homemade meals.

First, take stock of your fridge, freezer, and pantry. Discard expired food and old leftovers.

I used to think I was being efficient by buying food in bulk. But, this only leads to food wastage.

Now, I create weekly meal plans and shop once or twice a week for groceries. If you don’t enjoy cooking like me, I suggest sticking to 1-2 simple yet delicious recipes you can eat daily.

Our weekday meals consist of baked fish or chicken and vegetables. No fancy ingredients – just salt, pepper, garlic, and store-bought spice mix!

You can either meal prep the entire’s week worth of food at the start of the week or do it every morning as I do. I prefer the latter because it is the perfect opportunity for me to get extra steps in!

Eating the same food also means using the same grocery list every week. Not only does this save time, but it also reduces the stress of thinking about what to shop for!

Day 4 – Declutter and organize your digital assets

Today, you’re going to take a break from the physical organization and focus on your digital assets.

In this digital age, it’s no surprise that we have accumulated more emails, photos, and videos than we think!

Take this day to gather all of your electronic devices and declutter and organize your digital assets.

Here’s a list of things to look out for:

• Check the apps on your phone and delete the ones you haven’t used in the past three months
• Delete old text messages and emails
• File and categorize important documents, photos and videos using a cloud system and delete the rest
• Unsubscribe to unwanted newsletters

Day 5 – Work on the rest of the house

It’s time to work on the rest of the house – your entryway, living room, dining room, etc.

When in doubt, stick to the basics:

• Make sure each room is clean
• Tidy all of the surfaces
• Group similar items and give them a home
• Discard or donate any unwanted items

If you have extra time left, do the same for your bag, car, and other things you use daily.

Day 6 – Target your paperwork

Getting your life organized means targeting your paperwork and making sure you have everything important filed and stored in a safe place.

This may seem like a daunting task, but you’ll have no issues with it if you have the right help!

Day 7 – Schedule appointments and set phone reminders

So, you’ve planned your week and decluttered and organized your home. You’re probably thinking I’ve nailed “how to organize your life in one week.”

You’re almost there, but there’s still Day 7!

The final step is to work on your health, relationships, self-care routine, and home maintenance.

How?

By scheduling all of your appointments and setting reminders for yourself!

When life gets busy, we tend to forget to schedule important appointments. Don’t wait till the last minute to do this or you’ll panic.

Take a few hours today and make all of your appointments for the year. Yes, I’m referring to all of your doctor, dental, beauty, and home maintenance appointments!

In addition, you should also schedule and set phone reminders for important occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, and your social calendar in general.

Having these on the calendar makes sure you never forget AND forces you to make time for them.

After my mother passed away a year ago, I moved into my family home for six months.

The first month was brutal. I was overwhelmed with grief, and it didn’t help that my family home was dark, cluttered, and filled with negativity.

I knew my late mother wouldn’t want to see me (or any of my family members) in complete misery after her passing.

After all, we experienced many happy memories in our home. And, I knew she wouldn’t have wanted her death to overshadow these cherished moments.

So, I decided to create a positive atmosphere in my family home using these 10 easy ways.

It wasn’t easy and it took about five months before we finally felt more at peace with our new routine.

But, it was worth it. Not only did I honor my mother’s legacy by making our family home a happy place again, but I felt better at home.

Some people think traveling will bring them peace, but it is a temporary solution. Happiness starts at home, the place where you spend the most time in.

1. Declutter, declutter, declutter

The first thing I did after my mom passed was to declutter the entire home.

Over the years, we’d accumulated so much stuff and it made the house so crowded. Plus, being around the physical clutter made me uneasy. I felt like I didn’t have room to clear my mind or breathe!

Decluttering may seem like an overwhelming task, but I have an easy tip that can help you to get started.

Start decluttering by getting rid of these 10 everyday items first! It’s a lot easier and faster to decide what needs to go and what needs to stay when you’re going through meaningless items.

2. Get organizing

After I decluttered my family home, I started organizing.

My goal was to give everything in the house a home. The first step? Creating a system that works for my family.

First, I created storage systems that housed similar things together. For instance, I had an electronics drawer for chargers, batteries, and cables; a linen drawer for table linens and tea towels; a drawer just for CDs, and so on.

Frequently used items were kept in easy to reach places, whereas items used sparingly like our winter attire were kept in storage.

Most items were tucked away in drawers and cabinets to avoid visual clutter.

It didn’t take long for my family to adjust. Now, they know exactly where each item belongs without asking me. Plus, they know how to tidy up after themselves because everything is so systematic.

Being organized creates a positive atmosphere at home because our lives become easier.

3. Create and stick to a cleaning schedule

My mom used to do all the cleaning at home; so my dad and brother were pretty clueless when it came to this.

I didn’t want them to feel frustrated from living in a dirty home, so I created a simple cleaning schedule for them. I had three different types of schedules: a weekly, monthly, and quarterly schedule.

A cleaning routine is so helpful because it prevents tasks from building up. People don’t realize that it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and agitated when their homes are not in order.

Therefore, creating and sticking to a cleaning schedule helps to promote a positive atmosphere at home.

4. Airing out the home regularly

Here’s something I know I don’t do enough – airing out the home regularly.

Getting fresh air in the home is super beneficial to our health. Fresh air can improve our blood pressure and heart rate, promote a stronger immune system, and encourage higher serotonin levels, which improve moods!

Besides that, drawing the blinds or curtains and opening the windows lets natural light in. This is another benefit because sunshine helps to boost our spirits!

It doesn’t matter which season you’re in – opening the windows and airing out the home regularly is ALWAYS a good idea.

5. Make your home smell great

Do you know what always puts me in a good mood? Smelling something good.

Ever notice how you immediately feel relaxed in a spa or a hotel? That’s because these establishments understand the power of scent.

Making your home smell good is an affordable and easy method to create a positive atmosphere at home.

A great scent is relaxing and welcoming, and these are traits you want in your home!

When I lived in my family home, I added air fresheners in all of our bathrooms and lit candles whenever we hung out together in the living room.

Trust me when I say I noticed a positive shift in our energies after!

6. Rearrange the furniture

Another easy way to create a positive atmosphere at home is by rearranging the furniture in your home.

Look, I get it. My family home has had the same furniture since I was a teen. As beautiful as they look, there are times when I feel bored and uninspired being in the same space for years.

Instead of spending more money, try rearranging the furniture in your home instead. According to Apartment Therapy, rearranging furniture can spark creativity and help one to embrace change.

I felt this to my core when I reupholstered my favorite armchairs in the living room. Although they remained in the same spot, giving them a mini makeover was enough to brighten the room (and my mood!)

7. Display your favorite memories

Ever catch yourself smiling when you think of your favorite memories? Well, displaying your favorite memories at home is a no-brainer way to create a positive atmosphere at home.

Be it framed photos or travel souvenirs, displaying your favorite memories is a great way to put a smile on anyone’s face.

It’s nice to have a clean and neat house, but it’s these personal touches that truly make a house a home!

Although I consider my home to be on the minimalistic side, I still have framed photos of my family and friends because they remind me that I am loved!

8. Use kind words

Besides using home decor, using kind words in a home helps to foster a positive environment at home.

Words can have a huge impact on a person. A compliment can make someone happy, but negative words can have the opposite effect.

Think before you speak and whenever possible, choose kind words. Remember, material things are a bonus and it is far more important to have loving relationships within a home. This will help to create a permanent positive atmosphere at home!

9. Have fun at home!

For some people, a home is a place for rest and rejuvenation. For others, it is simply a roof above their heads at the end of a long workday.

But, home is also a place where you can have tons of fun! My husband and I love creating memories at home. We’ve hosted game nights, dinner parties, and sleepovers for our family and friends.

When it comes to having fun, size doesn’t matter. All you need is a clean space, great food, and amazing company!

10. Spend time with your loved ones

Home decor can only do so much. The best way to create a positive atmosphere at home is to spend quality time with your loved ones at home.

Whenever possible, my husband and I try to eat at least one meal together. We love dining together because it allows us to catch up on each other’s lives.

If you have children, dedicate some time every day to be with them. Have conversations with them and play with them.

Family time builds stronger relationships, which creates a happy and positive environment for everyone living at home.
