Couple and Dog Halloween Costume 2023 – Sushi, Soy Sauce & Sushi Chef

Halloween was a bittersweet memory for me last year. In September, we suffered a miscarriage (our first baby) and we were completely devastated.

I’d been so excited for Halloween because I was planning on dressing up the bump.

Plus, I wanted to make our Halloween costumes our official pregnancy announcement to family and friends.

Alas, it didn’t happen and I almost cancelled Halloween altogether.

As sad as I was, I didn’t want to stop our family tradition.

I didn’t want to miss this opportunity with our senior dog who was suffering from heart failure.

I didn’t have much time to think of a new plan because I was so fixated on a different costume.

Luckily, I found this simple sushi family Halloween costume DIY tutorial and it worked out perfectly!

My soy sauce costume is literally the easiest. All you need is a plain black t-shirt and black skirt / pants.

My husband followed the tutorial above to make my hat and the soy sauce label, which I stuck on my shirt.

Every year, I try not to spend a ton on our Halloween costumes.

This year was no different and we only bought four things:

Couple and Dog Halloween Costume 2022 – Colonel Sanders, KFC Bucket & KFC Fried Chicken

This KFC troupe ensemble has to be our favourite Halloween costume of all time.

Our little family loves KFC, so this costume was a no-brainer!

Right away, I knew my husband would be Colonel Sanders, I would be the KFC bucket and our dog would naturally make the BEST fried chicken.

As always, I pulled the base outfits from our wardrobes.

My husband will never wear a white suit, so it didn’t make sense for us to purchase it.

In the end, he wore a regular white shirt and black slacks. To make the costume stand out, we added a red apron and used a black ribbon for the bowtie.

To complete the look, he put on a pair of fake glasses and used baby powder all over his hair and face.

I burst out laughing as soon as I saw his final look. He did SO good!

I wore a black tee and a pair of black pants because I wanted to draw attention to the KFC bucket, which my husband DIY-ed.

I don’t have a tutorial for it, but it’s super simple. All you need are:

• 1 KFC logo print out
• 2 large pieces of white card stock
• 1 large piece of red card stock
• 1 piece of white foam sheet (for the straps)
• Tape
• Scissors

My dog’s bone was made from leftover card stock, which we attached to her collar.

It took my husband less than 30 minutes to work on all of our costumes, so I’d say this family Halloween costume is an easy great last-minute option.

Couple and Dog Halloween Costume 2021 – Joe Exotic, Carole Baskins, and a little lion

In 2021, my husband and I drew inspiration from a popular reality TV series on Netflix called “Tiger King.”

The Netflix series launched in March 2020, and we spent a good chunk of our time during lockdown binge-watching it.

If you’ve never watched it before, I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a good laugh.

Some of the main characters are so crazy – I can’t believe they’re REAL!

As you can see, my husband dressed up as Joe Exotic whereas I dressed up as Carole Baskin.

Granted these two characters are mortal enemies in real life, but I guess they’re a happily married couple in our world haha!

And, of course, the biggest star, our dog Chuubs was dressed up as a cute lion cub. Picture perfect!

As usual, we wanted to keep our costumes as budget-friendly as possible.

My husband wore his jeans and borrowed my cap.

All we had to get was a blonde wig and a leopard print shirt.

My husband doesn’t have a goatee but he took my eyeliner and drew a fairly realistic one on his face. How creative!

Thankfully, I already owned an animal-print dress, so all I needed was a flower crown and a wig.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a similar wig that could ship in time.

But thanks to my husband, I’m sure most people could figure out our Halloween costumes!

Our dog already looks like the cutest little lion with her original fur colour.

All she needed was a lion mane – I couldn’t find the same shade at the time, so we settled for this. I still think she pulled it off!

Couple and Dog Halloween Costume 2020 – Chefs and a lobster

Our first time dressing up for Halloween was in 2020.

Believe it or not, this was our first couple’s Halloween costume after 7 years of being together!

Thanks to the pandemic, we were stuck at home and wanted something fun to do. While doing my research, I stumbled upon Emma’s chef, butter, and lobster family costume on her blog.

I knew right away that I had to replicate the best couple and dog Halloween costume.

So, I opted for chef hats and matching aprons instead of the standard chef’s uniform.

Styling the set

Styling the set was so much fun because we drew inspiration from Luke’s lobster shack in New York.

We used everything we found in our kitchen and pantry to emulate an actual lobster shack. The list includes:

• A chopping block
• A large pot
• Seasoning e.g. salt and pepper
• Fresh fruit and vegetables e.g. lemon and chillis
• A signboard to welcome our non-existent customers (ha!)

Feel free to also add:

• Fresh herbs e.g. rosemary and thyme
• Seasoning e.g. paprika and garlic powder
• Tableware e.g plates and bowls

For someone who had very limited time to pull it off, I’m pretty pleased with how it all came together.

How Many Bags Should A Minimalist Own?

To me, minimalism looks different for everyone.

If you’re a maximalist-turned-minimalist, keeping 20 bags from a 100-bag collection might be your version of a minimalist bag collection.

However, if living with less is your intention, you’ll do just fine with 3 bags. One for work, one for leisure, and one for travel.

I have to admit, I belong to the former.

My mom was a real fashionista and owned a massive designer bag collection.

After she passed, I was lucky enough to inherit most of them.

While I’ve parted with most of her belongings, I’m still holding on to her bags for sentimental reasons because these were her prized possessions.

Additionally, the rough handle applies a lot of pressure on my shoulders, especially if I have to commute for a long time.

If you’re a fashion lover like me, decluttering your jewelry collection may be one of the hardest things you’ll ever do. Fret not, I’m here to guide you.

Here are five simple steps to create a minimalist jewelry collection:

1. Evaluate your lifestyle

As we grow older, it’s common to experience lifestyle changes. For example, you might be a mother now and childcare is all on you. Or perhaps you have a job that doesn’t permit you to wear jewelry.

You may still be holding on to all of your jewelry from high school or college days, but let’s be honest. When was the last time you wore them?

That’s why it’s so important to evaluate your lifestyle. Answer the questions below truthfully to figure out which jewelry you’ll be wearing most often:

• Does your job allow you to wear jewelry?
• If yes, are there any rules regarding this policy?
• Are you a stay-at-home mother who’s with young children all the time?
• How active is your current lifestyle? E.g. are you someone who’s on your feet a lot or do you enjoy doing outdoor activities?
• Do you often attend formal occasions like events and weddings?

Write your answers down in your notebook or on your phone, so you can come back and refer to them later.

2. Gather all of your jewelry

Now, gather all of your jewelry in one area in your home. You can assess how much jewelry you have and want to keep when you view your entire collection at a glance.

You DON’T need a lot of jewelry if you’re…

• not attending a lot of formal events

Once you’ve determined which pieces you like and wear frequently, set them aside. These will become a part of your jewelry collection.

What about the rest of your jewelry, you ask? Doesn’t it feel like a waste to get rid of them?

Well, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

Just because you’re not going to keep them doesn’t mean you have to throw them away. You can sell them on marketplaces like eBay or Craigslist or donate them to family, friends, and charities. You can even host a yard sale in your neighborhood!

When shopping for jewelry, look out for these terms:

I didn’t realize I had sensitive skin until I noticed my ears would get red and itchy when I wore certain earrings.

Do you lean towards gold or silver jewelry? Gold pieces look great for people with warm undertones whereas silver jewelry looks stunning on people with cool undertones. Personally, I prefer gold because it complements my skin tone.

Custom engagement ring – Since I’ve been married, my engagement ring and wedding band are the only rings I wear daily. My engagement ring is custom by a local jeweler, but the design is inspired by Catbird’s Violette The Swan. I fell in love the minute I saw it, and I still love it as much today!

Custom wedding band – I wanted something simple to pair with my engagement ring, so we went with the same local jeweler to custom-make a half-eternity band similar to this Edge of Ember version. I’m so pleased with how the combination turned out. It’s exactly like how I pictured my wedding stack to be – pretty, elegant, and delicate.

Statement ring – I love statement rings but can’t pull them off because I have short and stubby fingers. If you prefer something bold, I highly recommend getting a stacker ring or a croissant dome-shaped ring. All you need is one ring to complete your look!

Bangles / Bracelets

Gold classic bangles – I’ve been wearing a trio of gold bangles (a gift from my late grandmother) for as long as I can remember. Unfortunately, one is a little wonky and keeps slipping off, so I’m down to just two for now.

Rolling your clothes is the easiest way to save space in a suitcase.

How?

Rolling compresses clothing, which makes it easier to stack or pack side-by-side in your suitcase.

This means you’ll be able to fit more clothes because they can fit in tight spaces.

On the other hand, folding your clothes means other items may have to sit on top of your clothing pile.

This overlap will make it difficult for you to get to your clothes.

Just remember to use the right technique to roll your clothes to avoid wrinkles and damage.

However, not every piece of clothing is suitable to be rolled.

Bulky garments like jackets and sweaters take up more space when rolled because rolling cannot compress the material.

It didn’t take long before my wardrobe was overflowing with clothes.

Despite that, I didn’t want to declutter my clothes because I genuinely loved each and every one of them.

Even when I gained weight and couldn’t fit into the majority of them, I didn’t care. I just liked looking at them and having them in my wardrobe.

Don’t declutter because you feel like you have to.

Anything done out of obligation will only cause bitterness. We don’t want that! We want your decluttering journey to be stress-free and joyful.

Therefore, before you start decluttering anything at all, you should always ask yourself WHY.

Have you gained or lost weight and can’t fit into your old clothes? Has your personal style changed? Are you running out of space at home to store all of your clothes?

I wanted to declutter my clothes because I gained a lot of weight over the years and didn’t feel confident in my old clothes anymore.

Instead of making me happy, my clothes made me feel sad and unworthy.

Whatever your reason is, knowing why you want to declutter your clothes will give you motivation like no other.

2. Have the right mindset and attitude

When it comes to decluttering things you have an emotional attachment to, you need to have the right mindset and attitude.

You’ll need to be decisive and firm. That’s the only way you can be ruthless when decluttering clothes.

First, motivate yourself before you declutter your clothes. Knowing why you want to declutter your clothes and how decluttering will benefit you helps.

Next, find the right time to declutter your wardrobe. Don’t do it when you’re tired, hungry, rushing, or in a bad mood.

You’ll be much more productive if you are feeling well-rested and have set aside dedicated time to declutter.

Gathering all of your clothes in one place is the best way to see everything you own at a glance.

More importantly, seeing all of your clothes in front of you means you have fewer excuses to make when it comes to making decisions.

Be warned: it may come across as a shock to you to see how many clothes you have! Don’t worry, you’ll be OK. After all, the whole point of this exercise is to declutter your clothes ruthlessly.

5. Start easy by getting rid of damaged items first

Like all decluttering projects, it’s always a good idea to start easy.

How? By getting rid of damaged items first.

In this case, remove any torn, stained, and worn clothing from your pile of clothes immediately. You won’t be wearing those anytime soon!

Put them inside a box or a bag first – these will go to recycling later.

Decluttering damaged clothing is something quick you can do without thinking twice.

As a result, this will build your decluttering momentum and encourage you to keep going!

6. Create a “Yes”, “No,” and “Maybe” box

Before you continue, make sure to create three boxes – Yes, No, and Maybe.

The “Yes” and “No” boxes are there for obvious reasons. But, many people forget to have a “Maybe” box.

The “Maybe” box is the most important box to have if you want to declutter your clothes ruthlessly.

Let’s be real. There will be some articles of clothing in your wardrobe you won’t be able to decide on.

If you don’t have a “Maybe” box, chances are you’ll put them in the “Yes” box and tell yourself you’ll think about it next time.

Before you know it, months will go by and your “Maybe” pile will still be sitting in your wardrobe!

If you want to be ruthless when decluttering clothes, put your “Maybe” pile in a “Maybe” box, seal it up, and write a future date on it.

It can be 1-6 months from now – that’s up to you. Just remember to add a reminder to your phone!

Once the box is sealed, put it out of sight. You’re going to live without those clothes for a while.

If you didn’t need, miss, or want any of the clothes throughout this period, it’s time to get rid of them once and for all.

7. Try clothes on

Did you know you can declutter your clothes ruthlessly by trying them on?

Sometimes you just need to see how you look and feel before you can decide.

When you’re trying on your clothes, ask yourself these questions:

• Does it fit?
• Do you like the way you look?
• Do I feel comfortable and good wearing it?
• When was the last time you wore it?
• Where do you see yourself wearing it?
• Does it go with other pieces in your wardrobe?
• Does it hold sentimental significance? E.g. inherited from a loved one

If you answered no to the first three questions, toss the clothing in question into the “No” box.

You should also get rid of it if you…

• haven’t worn it in the past 6 months (in a normal year)
• can’t mix and match it with other pieces in your wardrobe

It’s common to find a dresser for casual clothes, a wardrobe for formal clothes, and a coat closet for outerwear in a home.

Stick to ONE wardrobe for your clothes after decluttering. Not only will it help you to maintain a clutter-free wardrobe, but you will also be able to locate things easily!

This tip works – but only if you have brutally honest family members or friends who can help.

Are you looking to organize your fridge for the first time? I can relate!

In the past, my fridge was mostly empty or filled with junk/processed food. I hardly cooked because I was always busy and I didn’t prioritize my health. Not to mention, I wasn’t a very good cook!

However, one of my personal goals this year is to take care of myself physically and mentally. This includes eating whole foods and making healthy meals.

I know the best way to motivate myself to eat healthily is to fill my home with fresh produce like vegetables and fruits.

If you share the same goal, this means you should organize your fridge too to encourage yourself to eat better!

Just like my under-the-sink cabinet organization, the first thing I did was to Google the subject.

There is a lot of information on this topic including first-hand experience of people organizing their fridges.

But, it was hard for me to resonate with them because their fridges looked PERFECT. I’m talking about fully-stocked color-coordinated fridges, y’all.

Since it’s just my husband and I (and our dog) living in the apartment, there’s NO way we can have a fully-stocked fridge and eat everything within a week.

So, I decided to organize our fridge based on what we eat regularly.

In this post, you’ll find a realistic account of how I organized our fridge along with some tips to help you organize yours too!

How to Organize A Fridge In 9 Simple Steps

1. Start with a blank canvas

Just like all of my other organization projects, I always start with a blank canvas.

In this case, you have to empty the fridge before you start organizing.

I know some of you may find this step gross, but it’s absolutely necessary! After all, you can’t organize something if you don’t know what’s inside.

If you’re worried about food going bad, I suggest putting your perishable items into a cooler with some ice while you work on the next steps.

If you don’t have a cooler, that’s OK! You can work on one shelf at a time.

2. Clean the fridge

The next step is to clean and disinfect every surface on the inside of your fridge.

Chances are you’re going to find some stains, spills, and food remnants if you haven’t organized your fridge in a while. Been there, done that!

It’s very important to clean your fridge so that you won’t get infected by any foodborne illnesses or contamination.

I’m not a fan of chemicals near food, so I prefer using a homemade vinegar spray and paper towels to wipe down all the surfaces.

All you need is some distilled white vinegar mixed with hot water in a spray bottle. The acid from the vinegar will help to break down any gunk or grime!

If possible, take the drawers and shelves out and soak them in hot soapy water before wiping them down and putting them in.

Just remember to dry everything well before you put them back where they belong. And, don’t forget to give the fridge exterior a thorough wipe down too!

Pro tip: Want to avoid unpleasant smells in your fridge? Add two drops of vanilla extract to your homemade cleaning mix!

3. Go through everything in the fridge

Remember all of the food you removed in step #1? It’s time to go through everything you had in the fridge.

Start by discarding expired food and old leftovers. If you haven’t touched those leftovers in a week, they need to go inside a bin!

After that, do a quick stocktake of what’s left. It’s time to evaluate what you eat (or want to eat) weekly!

Since I started to eat healthily, I’ve been stocking our fridge with mostly fresh produce like vegetables and fruits.

Since we don’t have children, I try not to keep too many snacks or processed food like chocolate, candy, and soda.

Besides that, I’m not very adventurous when it comes to cooking. As a result, I stay away from buying novelty or specialty items that I know I won’t use frequently.

Look out for types of food you barely reach out for – this is a sign that you shouldn’t be purchasing them again to avoid food wastage!

4. Create different categories

Once you have a realistic idea of what you consume every week, it’s time to create different categories for your food items.

Doing this will help to speed up your fridge organization later!

Here are some popular categories:

• Vegetables
• Fruits
• Dairy
• Condiments
• Sauces
• Snacks
• Kids
• Deli
• Meat

6. Measure your fridge and plan your space

Before you go into full organization mode, I recommend measuring your fridge and planning your space first.

Trust me, you’ll save a lot of money if you don’t skip this step!

Fridges come in different sizes, so what may work for me may not work for you. So, measure the width, height, and depth of each drawer and shelf before you shop for your storage solutions.

This is optional, but I also sketched my fridge and planned the space in it in a notebook. I’m a visual person, so seeing it on paper helped me to visualize what the result would look like!

My fridge has four shelves and two crisper drawers. Here’s how I planned the space:

• Upper shelf – Sauces and eggs
• Middle shelves – Fruits, veggies, milk, snacks
• Last shelf – Raw meat, poultry, seafood
• Door – Condiments, sauces, dairy, bottled water, other beverages
• Crisper drawer – Veggies and fruits

7. Use the right storage solutions

The right storage and organization solutions can save space and make your fridge look more attractive!

A lazy Susan is great because it corrals like items together and saves so much space. These are perfect for sauces, condiments, and fresh herbs stored in jars.

I love these clear drawers because they’re stackable and clear, which means you can see what’s inside them at all times. Plus, you don’t have to move anything to take the items out.

Clear bins are also amazing for grouping similar and large items. Make sure to choose bins with handles so that they’re easy to take out from the fridge.

Finally, I can’t live without my airtight glass containers. They store everything from cut fruit and deli meat to leftovers.

8. Start organizing!

Here comes the fun part! It’s time to organize the fridge.

Remember my plan in step #6? Like the saying, “there’s a method behind the madness”, there are reasons why certain things are placed on certain shelves.

Here are some tips you need to know about how to organize a fridge:

• The top shelf and fridge door are the warmest spots in the fridge, so avoid storing your milk and eggs there.
• Since ready-to-eat items have a shorter shelf life, placing them right on top and in front of you will make you go through them quicker.
• Keep raw meat, poultry, and seafood on the last shelf so juices don’t drip onto other foods and cause cross-contamination!
• Don’t wash your vegetables and fruits until you’re ready to eat them. Once they’re washed, they are easily infected by bacteria and viruses!
• Don’t chuck both your fruits and vegetables into the same crisper drawer. As a general rule of thumb, you should keep them separate. Otherwise, you can read this handy guide on which items to place in each drawer.

Pro tip: Use water-resistant shelf liners in your crisper drawers. Leafy and root vegetables and fruits can occasionally leave stains or residue when they go soft. Liners help make cleaning up a lot easier and quicker!

9. Use labels

Once you have all of your storage solutions, label them with vinyl stickers. This helps other family members and guests know where everything is supposed to be in your fridge.

I had mine custom made from a local seller, but you can purchase yours from Etsy. This seller has more than 20 fonts available and offers 3 different colors: white, black, and gold.

Alternatively, you can purchase a Cricut and DIY all the labels in your home!

P/S: Having labels also means you don’t have to be the only one putting away the groceries anymore! Your husband and children can help you out with this!

Pro tip: If the number of veggies and fruits you purchase changes weekly, use a “produce” sticker instead. That way you don’t have to worry about having insufficient bins with the right stickers!
