Edit: We’ve made this an annual tradition – scroll to check out our 2021 version of the best couple and dog Halloween costume you need to see today!
One of my goals this month is to get the whole family dressed up for Halloween. I know it seems a little silly to put on a costume when we’re not attending any Halloween parties this year. Since we’ve never done it before, why not start now and add a little cheeky fun to our lives? God knows we need it during this depressing time. Introducing, the best couple and dog Halloween costumes you need to see today.

Inspiration
2021
This year, my husband and I drew inspiration from a popular reality TV series on Netflix called “Tiger King.” This series launched in March 2020, and we spent a good chunk of our time during lockdown binge-watching it.
If you’ve never watched it before, I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a good laugh. Some of the main characters are so crazy – I can’t believe they’re REAL!
With that inspiration in mind, my husband decided to dress up as Joe Exotic whereas I would dress up as Carole Baskin. Granted these two characters are mortal enemies in real life, but I guess they’re a happily married couple in our world haha!
And, of course, the biggest star, our furbaby Chuubs would dress up as a cute lion cub. Picture perfect!
2020
When my husband and I decided we’d dress up for Halloween this year, we wanted to make it a family affair. We were obviously way more excited about putting our Shih Tzu in a costume so we started brainstorming couple and dog Halloween costume ideas.
My husband suggested we take on a Spiderman theme – Chuubs going as the (cutest) spider, him as Spiderman, and myself as Mary-Jane Watson. While I love a good superhero costume, I knew I would not have sufficient time to search or hand make all of our costumes (considering we only thought about dressing up in September!)
Then, I stumbled upon Emma’s chef, butter, and lobster family costume on her blog and I knew right away that I had to replicate the best couple and dog Halloween costume.
Costumes
2021
Chuubs’ lion mane
We bought Chuubs’ lion mane here, and it fit perfectly! The color is a little off, but it still made her look like the cutest lion cub.
My husband’s Joe Exotic costume
My husband is a complete T-shirt and jeans man. His wardrobe consists of only black, white, grey, and blue clothes.
So, when we studied Joe Exotic’s outfits, we had a good laugh knowing that my husband would never in a million years voluntarily dress like him, if it wasn’t good ol’ Halloween.
Joe Exotic’s signature look is his hair (facial hair included!) and his love for animal print shirts.
As usual, we wanted to keep our costumes as budget-friendly as possible. It didn’t make sense to buy a new head-to-toe outfit just for this occasion.
We pulled what we could find in our existing wardrobes (belt, cap, and jeans) and we purchased the rest (wig and leopard-print shirt).
My ingenious husband used my eyeshadow palette to draw the goatee on his face!
My Carole Baskin costume
Thankfully, I already owned an animal-print dress, so all I needed was a flower crown and a wig.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a similar wig, but thanks to my husband, I’m positive most people would immediately figure our costumes out!

Chuubs’ lobster costume
We bought Chuubs’ lobster’s costume here but these stores below offer great alternatives:
- A lobster costume that looks just like Chuubs’
- Funny 2-piece head and body lobster costume
- Plush lobster costume with hoodie
Our chef costumes
I wanted to keep all of our costumes affordable and reusable, so I decided to skip the usual chef uniform and opted for chef hats and matching aprons instead. Here are some of my favorite picks:
Apron
Chef hat
Styling the set
2021
We would’ve loved to photograph our costumes outdoors, but we wanted to play it safe considering we’re still in a pandemic!
We set up Chuubs’ tent in our living room, where we also switched on a digital autumnal artwork on our TV to replicate the outdoors.
It was a small set-up, but I think we pulled it off!
2020
Styling the set was so much fun because we drew inspiration from Luke’s lobster shack in New York. We used everything we found in our kitchen and pantry to emulate an actual lobster shack. The list includes:
- A chopping block
- A large pot
- Seasoning i.e. salt and pepper
- Fresh fruit and vegetables i.e. lemon and chillis
- A signboard to welcome our non-existent customers (ha!)
Feel free to also add:
- Fresh herbs i.e. rosemary and thyme
- Seasoning i.e. paprika and garlic powder
- Tableware i.e. plates and bowls
For someone who had very limited time to pull it off, I’m pretty pleased with how it all came together. Additionally, it was so much fun to plan and shoot our Halloween costumes! Is it too soon to start planning our Halloween costumes next year?
Jokes aside, let me know if you love this couple and dog Halloween costume and if you will recreate it in the future. If you do, I’d love to see your version so please leave your blog URL or Instagram handle in the comment section below!
Stay safe and have a happily eerie Halloween, y’all!
