How To Create A Chic Halloween Vibe With Cheap Halloween Decor

Living room halloween decor

Besides Christmas, my favorite holiday is Halloween. I love dressing up, giving (and eating) all of the candy, and curling up on the couch to watch classic Halloween thrillers. I love Halloween so much that hosting a Halloween party sits pretty high on my bucket list.

Since we are still social distancing, I, unfortunately, have to shelf the idea this year. Although my husband and I can’t host a get-together this year, we are decorating the apartment for Halloween for the FIRST time.

I’m inspired by the chic Halloween decor I’ve seen on Pinterest, so I thought it’ll be fun to recreate the same vibe. Here are 5 steps to create a chic Halloween vibe with cheap Halloween decor.

How To Create A Chic Halloween Vibe

Choose a specific space at home to decorate

Being a newbie at Halloween decorating can be overwhelming. It’s extremely easy to get carried away and have a million ideas and spend hundreds of dollars.

If you have a limited budget like yours truly, start small. Choose a specific space at home to decorate – popular spots include fireplace mantels, entryways, and living areas.

Don’t limit yourself to these conventional locations though. I’ve seen people get creative and decorate their laundry rooms, bar carts, and kitchens! We decided to focus and create two set-ups on our kitchen counter and by our mirror in 2020. This year, we focused solely on our living room!

Plan your Halloween theme

Choosing two dedicated spots made it easier for us to decide on our Halloween theme. Pro tip: Expect to find more cheap Halloween decor if you have a common theme.

We wanted to stick to our budget so we decided on a traditional black and orange theme in 2020. Once we confirmed our theme, we created a very simple mood board to bring our vision to life. Our mood board included skeletons, spiders, and spooky pumpkins!

I wanted to recycle our Halloween decor this year, so we used the same items and added a little twist to them. We spray-painted the plastic orange pumpkins gold and white, and they truly made ALL the difference!

Keep it simple and focused

The key to creating a chic Halloween vibe is to keep it simple and focused. Too many ideas will clutter the space and generate less impact.

Focus on 2-3 main props and build a story around them. For instance, if your theme revolves around witches, witch hats and broomsticks work great as the primary props featured.

Since we chose a black and orange theme, we made a list of what we had and what we wanted to buy before hitting the stores and shopping online. Our shopping list for cheap Halloween decor included skeletons, pumpkins, and spiders.

Use existing decor at home

Believe it or not, but some of the best Halloween decors are regular objects hiding in plain sight in your home.

I used my thriller books to add height to my props. Since we used a lot of spiders, I planted them among my vases and candles to create a realistic environment. Finally, we used our felt board to create a funny Halloween pun because, why not?

Besides these objects, feel free to play around with mirrors, perfume bottles, storage baskets, trays, and bar carts.

Attempt DIY projects

Statement Halloween decor can be costly but you can always attempt to DIY. We love a good bat invasion or an easy 2-layer bat garland.

Alternatively, you can also print spooky images or quotes and insert them in your photo frames.

Due to the lack of time, we did not get to try any of these projects but I’m looking forward to potentially recreating this genius candle-hanging installation next year!
