I recommend using gold beaded garlands because the gold pairs beautifully with red ornaments, making them stand out while adding a touch of shimmer.

I went with the gold star to complement the gold beaded garlands, tying the whole look together.

Minimalist Christmas Home Tour

After using the same holiday decor since 2015, I was desperate for a change.

I’m constantly trying to build an intentional and sustainable home; so I decided to switch from a traditional red-and-green theme to a neutral minimalist Christmas theme.

Although the decor looks more subtle, the house still feels warm, cozy, and inviting.

I chose white, gold, green, and wood tones because these colours are classic, and that means I can re-use my Christmas decor year after year.

Now, let’s take a look at my minimalist Christmas home tour!

Minimalist Christmas Tree

Our minimalist neutral Christmas tree is THE showstopper in our home.

I used the same artificial tree we’ve had since 2018 but changed its placement this year.

I wanted to make a grand statement with the tree; so I shifted it from a corner in the dining room to the top of our built-in nook.

It looks AMAZING – I don’t know why it took me so long to do this! The tree is now the first thing I see when I enter our apartment.

Honestly, I didn’t have a game plan when it came to decorating the Christmas tree.

Instead of going with a theme, I referenced my colour palette and bought ornaments with different textures, shapes, and materials.

I love a traditional tree but I wanted something whimsical and organic this year.

The result is a mish-mash of ornaments that still looks cohesive because of the neutral colour palette!

I also paired the tree with a black woven skirt to add contrast. It’s the first time I’ve used a tree skirt, and it really was the BEST. DECISION. EVER.

Since we don’t have a mantel, I stuck a simple hook rack next to the tree and hung two chunky knit stockings. How cute!

Minimalist Christmas Living Room

With the tree being the main focus of the living room, I kept the other areas minimal.

I added new floral, plaid, and textured cushion covers on the couch.

As for the coffee table, I laid a wooden tray that held a basket of gold baubles, a wooden tree ornament, and two taupe pillar candles.

Despite using simple objects, the contrasting heights and textures made this minimal setup visually interesting.

I also made minor adjustments to our daily TV console decor.

I swapped the artificial fern for a mini tree and decorated it with white ceramic baubles on one side.

On the other, I added a maroon honeycomb paper tree for a pop of colour.

The final (and cutest!) touch was the Christmas village placed at the centre of the console.

This spot was my second favorite space to decorate after the tree. I was already thinking of the fun I was going to have styling my kitchen shelves!

For the upper shelf, I came up with a Christmas village theme.

So, I laid some faux tinsel before placing a group of ceramic houses, a wooden house, a bicycle, and a pair of bottle-brush trees. It’s all about the details here!

For the next shelf, I kept it fairly functional. Our plates and mugs remained.

I added some amber bottles and a ceramic pestle and mortar for visual interest.

But, the REAL highlights here are the wooden houses and a beautifully-handcrafted brass watering can.

Finally, I kept the kitchen counter bare with just a Christmas sign, a faux mini tree, and a wooden pedestal holding a sole ceramic house.

Then, I made a few tiny tweaks to our everyday essentials like the soap dispensers and tea towel to match the overall theme.

Minimalist Christmas Bedroom

I wasn’t planning on decorating our bedroom until I received these gorgeous sage green sheets from Sunday Bedding (check out the feature they did of me here!)

The sheets just screamed HOLIDAY, so I immediately replaced our existing sheets in time for the festive season.

I wanted the rest of the decor to compliment the sheets, so I layered an artificial garland across our bedframe.

I also added a couple of fun ornaments like velvet hearts, gold stars, and a mini tree on the garland.

Since the garland isn’t pre-lit, I strung some lights over the garland.

But, it didn’t take us long to realize the latex mattress had a few problems.

First, latex mattresses do not isolate motion well.

I have a bad habit of tossing and turning whereas my husband sleeps on his back and doesn’t move throughout the night.

Additionally, our dog sleeps with us, and she moves around a lot too.

Since latex mattresses are usually bouncy, my poor husband’s sleep often gets interrupted as he’s easily woken up by frequent movement.

Secondly, latex mattresses do not conform to the shape of each person.

My husband is a back sleeper while I’m a side sleeper. As a result, we find that our latex mattress doesn’t provide sufficient pressure point relief.

This causes back pain for my husband (the back sleeper) and occasional hip soreness for me (the side sleeper).

Choosing the Joey Mattress

Joey offers just one mattress aptly named the Joey Mattress. It comes in four sizes – single, super single, queen, and king.

Its main composition is known as the in-house produced J-Foam™️ (a polyurethane foam blend) that is durable, supportive, cooling, comfortable, and recyclable.

It’s also supposed to absorb tension and energy well!

Since it’s a synthetic mattress, I was initially concerned that the bed may not be hypoallergenic. Thankfully, we haven’t experienced any allergies so far.

I gotta give credit to Joey Mattress since it’s professionally treated with dust mite repellant to strengthen protection against dust mites!

Since we have a king-sized bed frame, we chose the king-sized Joey Mattress.

Receiving our Joey Mattress

Delivery for the Joey Mattress was quick and seamless.

All we had to do was to set up a delivery date and wait for it. Phew!

What’s completely different about this experience is that Joey Mattress came in a box.

We’ve never had a mattress come in a box before, so this was new to us!

Although we’d read that the delivery person could carry the mattress straight to the bedroom and set it up, my husband was overly excited and wanted to do it himself.

With our previous king-sized mattress, we needed to hire help to bring the mattress up to our apartment because it was SO heavy.

However, since the Joey Mattress was vacuum-sealed and packed in a box, my husband was able to carry it up without any help.

Unboxing and setting the mattress up was easy too.

All we had to do was unbox and unroll it before using the blade provided (so handy!) to remove the plastic.

Once we removed the plastic, the mattress took about 15-20 minutes to revert to its original form. This was super cool and fun to watch!

My sleep review with Joey Mattress

Now, let’s get to the most important part of the Joey Mattress review – its performance.

After a month and a bit of sleeping on the Joey Mattress, I’m glad to report that my sleep quality has been great.

Here’s a snapshot of my Sleep Cycle app on my best and worst night with Joey Mattress.

My sleep quality during my best night was 98%. I was shocked AND impressed to see that I slept so soundly.

On the other hand, my sleep quality during my worst night was 75%, which isn’t too bad.

I also switched on the Sleep Cycle app for a week when we slept on our latex mattress and on my best night, my sleep quality was 94%.

However, if you compare both nights, you’ll see I had a deeper sleep with Joey Mattress!

What I love about the Joey Mattress

Zero motion transfer technology

The Joey Mattress’ zero motion transfer technology is GREAT for couples. Since the mattress absorbs all motions, my husband has slept better as he wasn’t affected by my frequent movement.

The right firmness

Although the Joey Mattress is a foam mattress, its firmness was just right.

We were worried because an overly soft mattress will sink in over time while a super firm mattress is just plain uncomfortable.

So, we were happy to discover that the Joey Mattress wasn’t too soft or too firm!

The mattress also contoured to the unique shape of our bodies, which allowed for a comfortable night’s rest.

99-night risk-free trial period

Shopping online for a mattress can be a nerve-racking experience.

The good news is that Joey Mattress offers a 99-night risk-free trial period.

If you don’t like the mattress for whatever reason, you can return it before 99 nights and get your money back!

10 years warranty

Besides the 99-night risk-free trial, the Joey Mattress also provides a 10-year limited warranty.

I’m happy this is provided because we’ll need some time to see if the mattress can hold both our weights over time.

Price

Since the Joey Mattress was a gift, we didn’t have to worry about how much it cost.

But, our king-sized latex mattress costs twice the price of a king-sized Joey Mattress.

So, in terms of affordability, the Joey Mattress wins hands-down.

What I didn’t love about Joey Mattress

There are so many things we love about Joey Mattress, but there are three things I didn’t like about it.

The mattress is not as thick as our latex mattress

One of the things I noticed is that the Joey Mattress is not as thick as our latex mattress.

While the thickness doesn’t affect its firmness or comfort level, I’ve always liked sleeping on a thicker mattress as it makes me feel like I’m sleeping on a 5-star luxury hotel bed.

Creases on the side of the mattress

Since the mattress came vacuum-sealed, there were deep creases on the side of the mattress after the mattress reverted to its original structure.

Unfortunately, the creases never went away even after a month.

Although the creases did not affect the performance of the mattress, I didn’t like the way it looked and had to use a steamer to get rid of them.

Delivery takes longer for East Malaysia

Technically, this doesn’t affect me since I’m based in Klang Valley.

But, I was born and raised in Sarawak, so I was a bit disappointed to know that delivery to East Malaysia takes about 25-30 working days.

On the bright side, delivery is completely FREE (which is almost unheard of – most brands charge for shipping to East Malaysia) and there is an option to pay for express delivery.

How I styled the Joey Mattress

As much as I love beautifully styled beds, I know they’re not realistic for every day.

Here’s how we keep our Joey Mattress looking chic and comfy daily:

• Use soft sheets in neutral colors. I recommend bamboo or linen sheets for the homey lived-in look
• Insert two quilts in your quilt cover. It makes your bed look so fluffy and feel so luxurious!
• Fold your quilt cover down to create an additional layer. If you want the bed to look extra fluffy, you can always go for a double fold.
• Opt for 4 pillows to give extra dimension if you have a bigger bed like a queen or king.
• Optional: include throw pillows and a throw blanket to add more layers and texture.

My overall experience

Ultimately, choosing a mattress is an extremely personal preference.

While I could’ve continued living with our latex mattress, I knew my husband would benefit more from the Joey Mattress.

How would you describe your home style? 

Honestly, we don’t really have a specific home style. While other people can easily identify their home style as transitional, industrial, farmhouse, minimalist, and whatnot, it’s rather difficult for us to do the same. This is simply because we decorate and style our house based on our needs and budget first, aesthetics second.

We wish we could do both simultaneously, but unfortunately, we’re individuals who have to mind our spending (you can call us cheapskate, haha). Nonetheless, we love experimenting with colors in our house. We’re definitely not afraid of colors. The latest paint job we had was painting our guest room plum!  We love it so much as it’s rather bold and cozy. Paint is a great way to elevate your house, especially when you don’t have a big budget for wall paneling.

What inspired your home decor? 

We’re forever thankful for Pinterest and Instagram. We love seeing other people’s houses and admiring their beauty and the owners’ touch to transform them into homes. Besides local home accounts, we follow home accounts from different parts of the world too. We learn a lot from these people—the culture, the style, the taboos, the tips, and so on. There are just so many things to be inspired and learned from!

What do you think makes your home you? 

Although we can’t point out the exact style of our house, one thing for sure is that we pretty much DIY-ed things in our home. I guess that is what makes our home ours.

Did you renovate your home?

Yes, but it was just a small renovation in 2015 that did not involve any structural changes. It happened two years after we moved in. Our original kitchen floors were ripped and replaced with herringbone floors, while the wall tiles were replaced with new tiles with a Japanese motive called Asanoha. We had new floor tiles installed in our backyard too. Also, we removed our staircase railing and put up bricks instead. The minor renovation took less than two weeks to complete.

We didn’t hire an interior designer because we had little knowledge/exposure to ID services when we first bought our home. However, with the emergence of social media, ID services have begun to establish their expertise online. Unlike us, new homeowners are so blessed as they’re so spoilt for choices and ideas!

What is your favorite element in your home?

This is a difficult question, haha. But given the current situation, we would certainly choose our balcony! We recently transformed it to be a functional space for us.

We get to chillax (we just sat on the floor before we did the makeover, haha). We get to work there at night and we even had a virtual reunion with our friends outdoors! We have a working space at home; it’s just that sometimes it is relaxing to be doing things outside, especially now that we’re stuck at home due to Covid-19. Such bliss!

What is the best investment you’ve made for your home? 

We believe that our best investment would be buying power tools! Having power tools help us to improve our house, and we’re able to create home décor pieces.

What were the DIY projects in your home?

We assembled almost all the furniture in our home, including our Ikea kitchen! We did board and batten, shiplap, and all the painting jobs (including the exterior) with our own hands. We also designed our laundry area with raised washer & dryer. Again, we did everything from scratch!

However, we would like to emphasize that while it is possible to DIY, please don’t attempt plumbing and electricity on your own. We’re fortunate that Amirul comes from an M&E background, hence why we DIY-ed these parts ourselves. But if you don’t, please leave it to the experts.

Name one regret you have about your home. 

Ah ha. This is a good question! Well, the only regret that we had was installing grills for the house! Being young-and-naïve homeowners at that time, we didn’t put much thought into it. We should’ve spent that money on the alarm system rather than spending RM5K on the grill, right? Haha. Anyway, alarm systems are getting cheaper now with all these apps, wireless systems, etc. So I guess it’s never too late. We’ll start looking into it soon. 

Where do you shop for furniture and home decor? 

We mostly shop from Ikea simply because it offers affordable home furnishings! However, we sometimes create our home décor pieces too. Just simple DIY pieces that you can find in tutorials online.

What will be your next home project?

We would like to tackle our current home office. It is situated in the upper living area that has a high ceiling. As much as we love high ceilings, we find it challenging to design such an area. We’re still looking at some ideas on how to make it functional and how to decorate it. 

Any advice you would like to share with others? 

Don’t be afraid to do, design, create or buy anything you love for your home. It could be cheap stuff, or it could be high-end pieces! You’re the one who is living in your house. You do you and be you! Never compare with others, and always be content with your home progress, no matter how small or big it is!

From tiling their own kitchen backsplash to wainscoting their bedroom, Diha and her husband nailed every project despite this being their first home.

“Since this is our first house, I really wanted to contribute something and make it memorable. That’s why we did a lot of DIY projects,” Diha explained.

Rather than being limited by their lack of knowledge, Diha, and her husband dove right into planning, designing, and building a functional yet stylish space.

They weren’t deterred by their house’s location either. Although their township is situated in the outskirts of the city without any mainstream eateries and stores, they’ve never felt more at home. In fact, the township’s peaceful environment is a bonus to the home they’ve built.

“I love living here. There are lots of trees along the road when you reach our township. It really does feel like ‘balik kampung!’ The best part about this location is definitely the ‘makcik goreng pisang’ and ‘pakcik cendol’ who are everywhere!” Diha gushed.

It took them five months to get their home to where it is today, and what a journey it has been for the both of them!

But, this social-media-and-digital-marketer-cum-baker is far from done. With “nothing is impossible” as the motto for this couple, expect even more DIY projects in store for them.

Did you hire an interior designer for your home?

We didn’t hire an interior designer. My husband sketched and designed the house. We did everything by ourselves – deciding on the layout, design, colors, and furniture.  I found the contractors and compared prices. It’s not easy to find the best price within our budget. But I’m so glad we found the right one. I referred to Pinterest a lot to get inspiration & ideas. I saved like a thousand photos on my phone. Haha. 

We renovated the kitchen partition and installed the kitchen cabinets. I always wanted a kitchen glass door with a black frame because I love the closed kitchen concept. It took around a month to complete our kitchen renovation.

Tell us about your favorite room or element in your house.

My bedroom is my favorite room in our house. We did another transformation for our house, which is wainscoting for our master bedroom. The bedroom after the transformation looks very modern and cozy. I love how it turned out!

What is the best investment you’ve made for your home? 

Definitely the kitchen area! We spent half of the renovation budget on the kitchen area – kitchen cabinets, partition, kitchen backsplash, glass door & kitchen appliances. I spend a lot of time in the kitchen. So, we decided to spend a lot on the kitchen area and find the best quality kitchen cabinets, kitchen appliances, etc.

Do you have any DIYs in your home?

Yes, we did a lot of DIYs in our house. We love doing them. These are some of the DIY projects in our house – bedroom wainscoting, laundry area, shower, kitchen backsplash. We did everything by ourselves from scratch. 

Name one regret you have about your home.

When we bought the house, the developer offered two options: 750sqt & 950sqft with a balcony. Since we had a limited budget, we chose the 750sqt opinion with no balcony. I think it would be nice to have a balcony for our cat, Sushi. I think for the next house I will definitely choose a bigger house with a balcony for us and our cats. However, I’m so grateful that we even own a house. The size is so perfect for us.

Where do you shop for furniture and home decor? 

Mostly from Ikea & Shopee. My favorite piece of furniture from Ikea is the sofa bed. It went viral on TikTok and everyone is looking at it. Haha. I love shopping at Ikea because it’s quite cheap and I love the quality. The same goes for Shopee, you can find good and cheap home decor at Shopee.

What is your next home project?

Our next home project is flooring. We decided to change the floor to SPC. The next one is a pantry makeover. I got inspired by the Instagram decor community.

Any advice you would like to share with others? 

You don’t need a huge house to decorate your house. Size doesn’t matter. Just do anything that makes you happy. Don’t wait until you have enough money to decorate your house, it will never happen!

How To Style A TV Console Under A TV

1. Start with a blank slate
2. Create balance by adding taller decorative items to both ends on the console

6. Add greenery to soften hard lines and to inject a pop of color

Step 1 – Choose the right TV for your space

Chances are, you probably already have a TV, and that’s fine.

But, if you don’t or you’re planning to upgrade, you need to check out the Samsung Frame TV.

Step 2 – Decide on the right placement for your TV

Next, you’ll want to make sure you choose the right placement for your TV.

Don’t underestimate this step! Sometimes the simplest thing can make the biggest impact.

Whenever possible, do not place your TV facing any doors.

You don’t want the TV to be the first thing you see upon entering your home unless it’s beautiful (like the Samsung Frame TV!)

Once you’ve decided where to place your TV, you’ll need to consider if you want to mount it on the wall or place it on top of a TV console.

I highly recommend mounting your TV on the wall.

It just makes make the entire area look super sleek and clean.

Now, if you’re wondering if you should mount it on the center of the wall or keep it off-centered, my answer is: well, it depends!

Are you aiming for a symmetrical look in your home?

If you are, then you should mount your TV in the center of the wall.

But, if you have a modern or eclectic interior style, you can keep your TV off-centered.

The best way to balance asymmetry is by decorating around the TV so that the TV is not the main focus.

Whichever option you choose, remember to mount your TV at the right height. The most common mistake people make is mounting the TV too high. According to Apartment Therapy, the TV looks best mounted six to eight inches above a media console.

Step 3 – Pick the right TV stand for your space

Once you’ve selected the TV and its placement, it’s time to select your media console or TV stand.

Built-in with a bookshelf

I’ve been seeing a lot of people building their TVs into their bookshelves, and I can see the appeal.

Tucking the TV into a bookshelf makes it look like it’s part of the decor, especially when the bookshelves are peppered with interesting trinkets.

Standalone console

If built-ins are not an option, the standalone console is for you.

Your TV may be out in the open, but that doesn’t mean the whole area has to look ugly!

Invest in a beautiful TV console that will elevate your living space.

Make sure to find one that has a hole in the back to allow cords to come out of the console and some closed storage so you can hide all of your other electronic devices.

Step 4 – Conceal the “ugly stuff”

There’s nothing more annoying than looking at a bunch of tangled cords underneath your TV.

I should know, I lived with it for three years!

I finally bought a large water hyacinth basket last month to dump everything in. My only regret is not doing it sooner!

Cords, modems, and other bulky devices should be hidden from plain sight.

Don’t have a media console to conceal them?

Get creative and use baskets, crates, or pretty boxes if you have them.

Step 5 – Decorate around the TV

Don’t fret if your TV is out in the open. You can still make the area look beautiful if you decorate around the TV!

Create a gallery wall

This is by far the most popular decorating tip because it works!

Place your TV off-center and create a gallery wall around it.

Make sure to hang your frames above and around your TV so that your TV looks like it belongs on the wall.

The art around the TV will create visual interest, and the TV will no longer be the area’s main focus.

You can even go the extra mile and add beadboard paneling to your dark wall.

The overall result is an accent wall that is beautiful AND practical.

Step 6 – Style the console

The final step to putting all the pieces together is to style the TV console.

I like to start with a blank slate so I can experiment with a few different options.

Create balance

The trick to styling any space is to create balance, and the best way to do that for a standalone console is by using symmetry.

Since I have a huge built-in cabinet on one side, I added some height to the other side of my console with a large picture frame.

Although the picture frame is still significantly smaller than the cabinet, they share the same rectangular shape.

I also added more decor items on the same side because I wanted this corner to carry the same visual weight as the cabinet.

Be intentional

Overdecorating is a real thing, people.

I’ve seen people crowd surfaces because they think it makes the area look better.

Newsflash: it doesn’t. It just looks like clutter!

Breathing room is so important when it comes to styling.

That’s why I usually work with six to eight pieces when it comes to styling a surface.

Being intentional with the pieces you display allows people to appreciate them more instead of simply glossing over them. Less is always more!

Besides that, I like using a combination of sizes from large vases and books to small candles and ornaments.

Using different sizes creates contrast and builds visual interest.

Group small accessories together

If you have a lot of smaller accessories, group them in threes.

Then, use a tray, books, or a basket to hold them together.

Trays are an excellent way to keep things organized.

They can also provide another layer of texture to the overall look.

Use greenery

Include greenery in your styling whenever possible.

Real and faux plants soften any hard lines and make any area look cozy.

Plus, they add warmth and a touch of color to a home.

They are one of my favorite things to decorate with, and I had to include them on my TV console!

When we purchased our first apartment three years ago, I knew instantly that I wanted to hire an interior designer. I’d never worked with one before, but I’d seen so many portfolios online that I was convinced I needed to leave my home to the experts.

Our design and renovation process took about seven months, which were filled with high highs and low lows.

Many people have asked if I regret hiring an interior designer. I find that question so difficult to answer because it’s a yes and no situation for me.

On one hand, I regret hiring an interior designer, but not for reasons you may think. I regret not trusting myself to design my own home. I regret not pushing myself out of my comfort zone, and I regret prioritizing my job over my home. What was I thinking?!

On another hand, I have zero regrets because I don’t think we would’ve been able to finish our renovation in four months if we hadn’t. I know four months sound like a long time, but it would’ve taken us WAY longer if we handled it ourselves.

Having someone to talk to during the renovation journey also prevented me from having decision paralysis. I tend to procrastinate when I can’t make up my mind, so it was helpful for me to bounce ideas with someone.

Another popular question I get asked most often is, “What are the pros and cons of hiring an interior designer?”

Well, I can’t speak for everyone, but here’s my experience hiring an interior designer.

Pros of hiring an interior designer

Serves as a single point of contact and accountability

This reason alone is WORTH the investment for me because I had a demanding job back then.

Hiring an interior designer is similar to hiring a wedding planner. Just like a wedding, there are so many different elements to a renovation. Some people hire interior designers for design work only. But, our interior designer was in charge of every aspect of the renovation.

Bonus tip: Always check your interior designer’s scope of work before you begin renovation, and lock that down in a contract!

My previous sales job required me to deal with a lot of people daily. So, it was a HUGE relief for me to only deal with one person rather than 20 different vendors during this period.

I still remember visiting the site after a busy workday. I noticed the pendant lights in the kitchen were not straight and someone had bought the wrong tiles for the backsplash.

All I had to do was text my interior designer and let her know about the mistakes. They were rectified within the next few days.

Since I stress out easily, having a single point of contact and accountability reduced my anxiety.

It also gave me peace of mind knowing I had someone to help me with firefighting issues. And trust me, there WILL be issues, but an interior designer is responsible to resolve them and keep the renovation going.

This made the experience far more pleasant than my wedding planning journey, where I didn’t hire a wedding planner and had to deal with all of the vendors on my own.

Saves time and energy

Hiring an interior designer saved me a lot of time and energy. It may not look like it, but designing and decorating a home is a long and complicated process.

Now that I’m planning to revamp our space without the help of a designer, I’m spending so many hours on Pinterest, Instagram, and home decor blogs. And, I haven’t even created my vision board yet!

I can’t tell you how much I appreciated my interior designers doing all the groundwork for me when we renovated. They made it look so easy when they showed up to our meeting with a few samples of everything, but I know it probably took them a while to source for what I like.

Since they handled mostly everything, I could focus during the busiest period of my work, where I was coincidentally overseeing three retail build-ups! Haha, talk about the irony!

Access to better resources

Interior design firms usually have a network of contractors, suppliers, and other contacts they work with. Since this is their trade, they know who is reliable and can produce high-quality work.

Renovating a home is an expensive affair. We knew hiring our contractors would be risky because we never know what we’re going to get.

We also knew it would be a time-consuming process since we didn’t know where to start. On top of that, the language barrier was an issue for us.

A lot of our friends’ contractors only spoke in their native non-English languages, and we knew we wouldn’t be able to communicate smoothly with them. The last thing we wanted during the renovation was a misunderstanding with our contractors!

In short, we knew we would benefit from hiring an interior design firm because they simply have better resources. True to our experience, our interior designers didn’t disappoint. Although we were never introduced to their contractors, we were pleased with the outcome.

Provides the right balance between aesthetics and functionality

An interior designer does more than just make a space look pretty. They are professionals who can provide the right balance between aesthetics and functionality in a home.

We knew how we wanted our dream home to look, but we lacked the knowledge and experience to ensure the redesigned space is spacious, efficient, and practical. Interior designers are responsible to let you know what works and what doesn’t.

As this was our first home, we didn’t know what to look out for. Thankfully, our designers implemented some of the smartest hacks we never even knew existed!

Produces quality work

Good interior designers take pride in their projects. They usually try their best to produce quality work to build an impressive portfolio, which helps to attract more clients.

Sadly, this isn’t always the case. We’ve heard of many horror stories about interior designers providing poor quality work and even worse, disappearing mid-construction!

We were glad we chose a firm that provided a breakdown of renovation works and costs in a contract, which was very important to us. Plus, they constantly updated us about the progress of our renovation.

Our journey wasn’t smooth-sailing, but we were very happy with how the home turned out.

At the end of the day, our interior designers delivered the results we wanted. And, that was the most important thing for us.

Cons of hiring an interior designer

Delays in starting work

The problem with hiring interior designers is that you’re not the only client. As a result, your renovation may be delayed if your designer’s other projects are pushed back.

Additionally, a professional interior designer will take some time to plan, brainstorm, and design your space. After that, you will spend more time reviewing and revising the layout until you are completely satisfied with how the final renderings look.

It’s a lengthy but necessary process!

In our case, it took us almost two months to confirm the design. Then, it took another month for our management to repair the defects in our apartment. Following that, our designers took another month to finish another project before they could start ours.

Our advice? Take delays into consideration when planning your renovation, especially if you’re living in a rental. Start talking to your interior designer a few months before you get possession of your new place. Once you have your keys, you should hopefully be able to crack on with construction.

Requires overseeing

Some homeowners don’t want to get involved at all. I get it. That’s why you’re paying your interior designers, right? They’re supposed to do all the work!

I admit I’m somewhat of a micromanager. It’s not that I don’t trust my interior designers. I’m just anxious because it’s our first home, and I want it to be perfect!

In my case, micromanaging paid off. We managed to prevent a few major mistakes from happening.

Remember someone bought the wrong kitchen backsplash? Well, it was a good thing my husband and I visited the site daily because we spotted the wrong tiles before they were installed.

The initial tiles were too big and didn’t match our vision board. It took our designers two tries before they bought the right ones. Imagine if they had installed the first tiles – that would’ve been a costly mistake!

Expensive

Interior designers are not cheap regardless of their scope. 13% of our total renovation costs were interior designer fees.

We wanted to save money, so our costs didn’t even include 3D renderings. Plus, we had to pay to get an initial quote, although that went towards the final cost.

I understand hiring an interior designer is a luxury not everyone can afford. Was it worth it for us? Absolutely!

Changes in management

Management changes may occur if you hire an interior design firm. A bigger firm usually has more than one designer and project manager. If you’re lucky, you’ll work with the same team from start to finish.

We were rather unfortunate because we had a sudden change in management. Our project manager left right before construction started. We were nervous because we’d never communicated with our new project manager. But, she was a true professional and assured us she would take care of everything. And, she did!

Others

There’s always going to be one or two unique pros and cons of hiring an interior designer.

Ours is a pretty rare situation because we thought our designers could do better when it came to sourcing furniture and home decor pieces. We were very surprised when they proposed a lot of Ikea furniture to us.

Don’t get me wrong – I love Ikea as much as the next person. However, I was hoping they would have access to one-of-a-kind suppliers and custom furniture makers.

I know they were probably trying to work within our budget, but it would be nice to see more unique options!

Will I hire an interior designer again?

It depends. I know, I know. It’s a vague answer, but I’m being honest! It comes down to our current situation and if we can afford it.

If I have the time, I would love to take up the challenge of designing our own home. At the same time, I know there are a ton of talented interior designers with whom I’ll love to work with. I mean, it’ll be an absolute dream if I could hire the Three Birds, Amber Interiors, or Pure Salt Interiors!
